It's because Americans can't read subtitles while they watch, and they can't work out who the villian and victim is unless a typecast US actor/actress plays the role. They find good foreign films that they think they can reproduce (albeit badly) which will still do alright at the box office. The movie studios are there to make money and everything else is subsidiary to that. It's a shame but that's the way it is. Having said that it would be interesting to see a distributer spending half the budget that a remake would cost on marketing the original and see if that was more cost effective. I feel sorry for Americans who have been labelled too thick to follow a subtitled film (or a film not based in the US, with US actors) before they get much of a chance.
