I say this as when I went to see Terminator at the weekend there was an 18 year old by himself behind me in a Terminator T-Shirt  I must say it looked very very sad.

Never done it myself but don't really see the problem to be honest. Been to football games on my own a few times.

It's only sad in your eyes. To plenty of people it is perfectly normal. Why be so judgmental?
I've never understood why lots of people insist on always going with friends - you can't actually talk to them during the film anyway.

Spot on. Also depends on the type of film too (get your minds out of the gutter)

I wouldn't. Just couldn't, really.
I can't help but actually feel sorry for people when they are at the cinema/having a meal on their own etc. They might not even be bothered, but I still feel sorry for them

There's really no need. Some people choose to go to the cinema on their own - what is there to be sympathetic about?

I like going to the cinema on my own. I like drinking on my own. Even if I had friends I'd probably still do it.

I probably wouldn't go to see a blockbuster type movie alone, but when I used to work at a cinema they often had older cult films on as midnight screenings and if my shift finished early enough I enjoyed going in to watch them, often by myself. A lot of the films I saw then have had a big influence on my appreciation of cinema too.

lol.
Occasionally I prefer going to the cinema on my own, or sometimes with a friend or two. It's not as if I go to the cinema often enough for it to be an interesting detail. As it happens, I've gone to more Saints matches on my own, over the years than not, because none of my everyday friends have ever given a toss about football. In fact, I'm considered slightly off my trolley to be a football/Saints fan.

Never have but I don't think there's any stigma to doing so. I only go to the cinema about once every 2 years anyway 'cos I can't be doing with sharing the experience with a couple of hundred others. Especially those who can't keep their mouths shut for 2 hours and insist on either filling it with a ****ing buffet or chatter away on their phones/to mates.

I honestly don't know, I just automatically sympathise with them.
In a way though, I wish I could do it but wouldn't feel atall comfortable enough to do so!! That said, I'd happily go to a Saints game on my own and did so for two seasons when I was about 12.

I have before, when my mate texted me that he couldn't come and I didn't have my phone on me. I've been to see a couple of films alone during school holidays when ridiculously bored. I go to football alone reasonably often as well, I don't see much wrong with it. I wouldn't choose to go alone over going with others, but I don't mind going alone.

I went into the cinema with a girl, and came out on my own
The bloke next to her dropped his guts & she walked out
It was the first late night screening of 'Bad Lieutenant', so I stayed.
She was waiting in the foyer for me looking pretty miffed

The chivalrous thing to do would have been to outgas the bloke in question...

Maybe another poll for "Have you fondled with the opposite sex in the cinema"

What about fondling with the same sex?

This does not bode well for my retirement years...

If salting your own popcorn counts then I've done that.

I'm sorry this bothers you. I shall try and keep the noise down when I'm putting away my own bodyweight in popcorn, in future.

When i occasionally go to the cinema it's on my own and at a time when their won't be any kids or students about, i'll also wait until the film is in the second or third week of the run so that it's only about 10% full. Sad, maybe but at least it stops me wanting to throttle
a) people who talk all the way through
b) people with noisy food and/or disgusting noisy eating habits

Going to the cinema full stop is for sad ******s, whether you are alone or with a million mates.
Going to the pub/meal/football on your own is acceptable , and often preferable.

I wouldn't go to the cinema at all, because it is primarily for chavs and kids, and thus would answer 'no'. However, I don't see the problem with going on your own if in those categories.
I do go to lots of gigs on my own and I often prefer it this way, depending on who I'm seeing and how much headbanging will be done.

I have been on my own before, when I went to the kiosk to buy the ticket she sold me two. When I explained it was just me she looked at me as if I was a diseased kiddy diddler.
I have not been back since.

I have to pull you up on this actually Rattlehead. I would agree with you if you are talking about Odeon or Cineworld (or whoever owns that franchise this week!) because they are invariably linked to amusement arcades, bowling centres, crap restaurant chains etc... (Leisure World being the rpime example) and are therefore a mecca to everything that is cheap and tacky. I tend to avoid those kind of cinemas myself. But......
Here in Sheffield we have a fantastic independent cinema called The Showroom, which shows a lot of independent films, documentaries, world cinema and anything else that isn't produced by Hollywood and plastered all over billboards everywhere, and I have never seen a single chav or kid anywhere near the place. I quite happily go to this place on my own if there is something on I want to watch, and looking around it often seems like most of the people there are alone, and have gone there for the film itself rather than the social experience.

Fair enough. I might be tempted if there were no chavs and the movies weren't the usual Hollywood sh*te, although Sheffield is a bit far. I know there are a few of these in London but I'm normally too lazy to check it out, even though they're on my doorstep. I suppose I've got used to buying DVDs (nearly always independent films/world cinema) and watching them in the comfort of my own home, on a massive TV and with loud surround sound. And with booze as well of course.

Yup, often go to Harbour Lights without the spouse or mates if there's a film I want to see that they wouldn't be interested in. Last time was when I went to see Let The Right One In.
For big, Hollywood type blockbuster things, like the new Terminator movie, we'll make a family night out of it and all go.

Havent been to the cinema on my own, but then again, i think the whole cinema experience isnt what it was. Now that most people over the age of 18 can afford large TV's, surround sound, and download films for free there is less need to go because you can recreate the "experience" at home....
been to loads of gigs on my own, James @ Shepherds Bush Empire was weird as I managed to get an aftershow party pass. I felt a right *** standing there on my own, drank my free beer and got the train home.
Went to India for 6 months on my own.
