Been listening to the most recent Richard Thompson album, Dream Attic. It's a live album - all-new material recorded with a band. I wasn't bowled over by it. Some good songs. But not a stand-out for him. But maybe I get so familiar with an artist, sometimes, that I get a bit jaded.

Have to disagree about his live performances. Whether solo acoustic, or full band performances, they're always great. I saw him do a solo acoustic show in Toronto a few years ago that was simply superb. His guitar-playing is just jaw-droppingly great!

I'm a huge fan of June Tabor, too! She is equally superb doing versions of traditional folk material, as she is doing covers of contemporary stuff. One of my favorite albums of hers is A Quiet Eye - and it features two RT songs (Waltzing's For Dreamers and Pharoah). One of the UK's great song-interpreters.

Spent a happy hour on YouTube yesterday audio-surfing my way from BA Robertson (my Mum told me he co-wrote Mike and the Mechanics - The Living Years), through Siouxsie and the Banshees through Devo through The Speacials through The Bell Stars (no, really), through The Selecta, through Tears for Fears, through Bow Wow Wow, through The Nips, through the Nipple Erectors, through the Pogues, through to The Clash.

Lyrically very interesting that song.

I remember singing along to that as a much younger man and thinking how lyrically-sophisticated BA Robertson was "for a Scotch". Times change.

I also re-listened to "Kool in the Kaftan" and "Knocked it Off" but they weren't up to the mark so I went surfing as described above...

I think it's his best solo effort to date, but like all his solo stuff his voice lets it down a touch. Steve Winwood and Clapton feature on it, so all in all I'd say it's pretty good.

Good shout Manji. I haven't got this yet but there's some killers on there.
The Stone Fox Chase tune is fantastic and has been effectively sampled many times (Sure Beats Workin is my favourite).

I've been having a bit of a splurge on this stuff lately and if you're enjoying the Soul Jazz compilation try checking out 'Ton Ton Macoute' by Johnny Jenkins (this includes the version of 'I Walk on Gilded Splinters' that was sampled by Oasis and Beck) which features Duane Allman.
Also worth serious investigation is 'Push Push' by legendary flautist Herbie Mann, again featuring Duane Allman.
At the moment I'm listening to a couple of outstanding albums by Muscle Shoals Horns; 'Shine On' and 'Born to Get Down'.

Just bought it. I've liked her since she won CMA song of the year with "When you say nothing at all" back in 95. The Keating version is a pale rip-off.

Glyn Johns (engineer) worked really hard putting together an acceptable LP from all that material. He presented at least two versions of the album to the band. They couldn't agree on either. The project was left incomplete for several months until Lennon took charge of getting the thing done. He gave the tapes to Phil Spector.

The original concept of Let It Be (the album) was to record the band as they used to play in the earliest days - live and without overdubs. Perhaps Spector was unaware of this idea; anyway, he overdubbed orchestra and choir on a few tracks. Paul McCartney was appalled at what Spector did with The Long and Winding Road. But to be honest, the band had pretty much washed their hands of the whole thing and Spector was given cart blanche - or. at least, left unmonitored as he put together an album.

I remember seeing an interview with Sir George Martin, he said that Abbey Road was such a great album because they realised they messed up Let it Be (or Get back as it was originaly known as). He said that although it was never said everyone including him knew it would be the last time they worked together and therefore wanted to go out on a high. There was a tribute to Sir George that aired on BBC 4 the other night, and he came across as quite upset, even after all these years, about being "frozen out" of the Let it Be final production. It could have been a great album, but if you listen to Sir George that may have meant no Abbey Road.

Such a shame the film was so sad in parts, particulary when Harrison and Macartney go at each other. They could still work together and have fun even as late as '68.

I'm listening mostly to his recent stuff now. The album that documents his separation from Daryl Hannah, I'm Alive is excellent - a great collection of songs. I think it's his best of recent times. Of the early stuff, my favourite song is Something Fine (it's from his very first LP). It's the combination of guitar work, singing and song. Perfect!

Some great duets on that, especially the Van Morrison one.

The great news is found a whole bunch of my old cassette tapes today. Back in about 84 they made fake tapes illegal here and they got sold off at about 10p each think we all bought about 200 each. Seemed to have about 50 or so left time to dig out an old cassette player, can't play them in the car this time of year they melt! OK I've mentioned we became American Idol fans.

They had their season finale last night.

2 hour show OK it's hype & pure brutal marketing of new albums/singles/movies/books American stylee but hell for a TV show what a line up they had. The last 4 finalists got to sing with superstar surprises as well as even bigger surprises coming on and doing new singles and stuff.

Then in no particular order Casey Edwards who came 5th doing Queen with Jack Black?? which must become a legendary moment

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEm9yeeM1Io

Respect Jack Black holding his own Rocking in front of about a zillion TV audience. Then hell I forget Gladys Knight, Beyonce, Gaga, Tony Bennett, Bono & Edge, Tom Jones, Marc Anthony with J-Lo doing this mamma dance routine, TLC, Stephen Tyler (awesome Dream On), Carrie Underwood (phwoar), Tim McGraw (C&W) and my favourite rocker of the series getting this moment with

I remember seeing LJB as part of "Steam Packet" supporting Chuck Berry at The Gaumont (now Mayflower) in the late 60`s. They were quite a line up:-

As for Sandy Denny being "twee"....anyone who read this :- http://www.amazon.co.uk/No-More-Sad-Refrains-Times/dp/1900924358 will find a rather complicated sometimes very sad personality. Yes, what an amazing line-up that was!

Well, to give LJB his due, after his brief flirtation with the "big time" as an Engelbert Humperdinck-styled pop singer, he returned to the Blues. In 1971 he put out a great LP called It Ain't Easy - one side produced by Rod Stewart, the other side produced by Elton John. It featured the amusing lead-off track "Don't Try to Lay No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll".

BTW, Long John Baldry became a Canadian in the late 70s. He lived near Hamilton first and then went out to the west coast.

I can't believe I just sat through, ( well, skipped through ), that racist supremacist claptrap, ( and you are aware that there are at least 3 separate songs in there ).

And as for the diatribe at the end, ( I have tried to copy the grammer as it is presented ) :
"Rhodesia. Once a friendly, civilised nation. Built by brave men of good quality. It was threatened by Britain, USA, and small nations with stupid politicians, like Sweden who was in the front to create a black communist banana republic of Rhodesia.

Rhodesia was defended by brave men of good quality, but they lost.

Zimbabwe.
A result of support from former super power, communist Soviet Union, communist China, communist North Korea, socialist Sweden and other nations with unresponsible politicians and governments of poor quality."

Not at all surprised that you 'love' it.

6.30 mins is a superb song. Really catchy. An Afrivision winner IMO.

Plenty of riffage, but at 75+ minutes and every track featuring full on screaming, it becomes a bit much and the comparisons to Zen Arcade and The Shape Of Punk To Come are a bit generous.

Yes. I have both series on DVD. They are both superb example of documentary story telling. Didn`t he also do the "Story of Jazz" series?

Yes. It's called simply Jazz. I enjoyed it immensely, but it got savaged by some jazz critics, who thought it too conservative in its approach. They objected to the excessive reliance on the views of Wynton Marsalis and the lack of attention to many modern sub-genres of jazz. And the last fifty years of jazz history was glossed over in the very last episode of the ten-part series.

I've been listening to a lot of different stuff, the new[ish] Iron & Wine album has been able to satiate my folk side http://vimeo.com/19116573 and is great.

on the art-rock, indie, hip-hop crossover thing i've been rediscovering Why? too.

I also found a really cool modern flamenco band recently called Canteca De Macao who actually give their stuff away via the internet under a copyleft licence.

My daughter got me Badfinger's greatest hits as one of my Fathers days presents. In all fairness there is only about 5 "hits" on it, but I'd forgotton just how good they were.

Nope, didn't enjoy it at all.

We fecking LOVED it...

What an awesome night out, couple of old farts dancing like Dads and we didn't care because EVERYONE was doing the same. Haven't got my hands in the air like that for years.

The hits came and went but by the end everyone simply Raved to every damned song.

His first Encore? We never saw THAT coming... The original Willy Dixon version of Led Zep's Whole Lotta Love.

If he's heading your way pour a gallon of VodkaredBulls down your throat and then go dance.

The English Chick singer Joy someone - awesome voice & range.

Oh Lordy somewhat stunned by that, really did not see such a great gig coming
