MoS - The Annual II (1996).
And why not, cheesy...
We have started listening to Radio One in the office and it is truly, truly terrible.
This is what I have had to put up constantly over the past six and a half hours:
New Coldplay w/Jay Z x 3
Kings of Leon -- Use Somebody x 3
"Money in my pocket" x 4
Leona Lewis -- Run x 3 (TERRIBLE SONG)
The Script x 4
New Oasis x 3
New Take That x 4
I can't last for much longer.

Tis despicable. I have it in the car sometimes as it's available to me via Sirius satellite radio. I can usually only stomach a few minutes (Sara Cox, Scott Mills, etc) before I'm reaching for a different preset. It used to be fairly decent 10 years ago.

The Killers - Day & Age
Guns N Roses - Chinese Democracy
Day & Age is like the lovechild of Hot Fuss and Sam's Town, retaining the deep lyrical side of the latter and injecting a bit of the hot-blooded funk of the former (especially in opener Losing Touch). The combination is pretty damn good I have to say, it's an instantly likeable album but it's not vapid-pop as I had worried it would be after listening to first single Human (which has actually really grown on me). Really like this album. 8/10
Chinese Democracy however is a whole different ball game. It differs quite a lot from the older GNR stuff, which is good as the band need to appeal to a different audience now that music has moved on a bit. At first listen it sounds remarkably similar to the music that Velvet Revolver (the band that the rest of the former members of GNR went on to form when the band split) makes. The songs themselves aren't too great tbh, it's kind of an average album really. I have a feeling that this might be an album that people have differing views on, and i'm in the camp that thinks it's a bit crap really. Disappointing. 5/10

The album is terrible. The Killers must be one of the biggest failures and disappointments of all time. Back in 2003, this band really excited me. Early demos of The Ballad of Michael Valentine, Under the Gun, Mr Brightside and Somebody Told Me were top drawer and the first five songs on Hot Fuss are very good. Since then, they have declined into a parody. Day & Age is one of the worst albums I have heard in a long time. I thought they couldn't become any more of a joke after the release of their last album but they have truly surpassed themselves. Shocking.

Went on a bit of a birthday spending spree and bought some new albums:
Biffy Clyro - The Vertigo of Bliss 7/10
Second album from the Scots, not their best but certainly a good album nonetheless. Bit more 'screamy' than the Puzzle stuff and some quite heavy riffs.
Best Song: Toys, Toys, Toys, Choke, Toys, Toys, Toys
Biffy Clyro - Blackened Sky 8/10
The band's first album. This album has got some of the band's best work ('57', 'Justboy' and 'Stress on the Sky' to name a few) on it, and some really good songs in between. Recommend you buy it.
Best Song: 57
Biffy Clyro - Infinity Land 9/10
Rounding off my Biffy Clyro spending spree is this album. Their third album has got some really great songs on it, such as 'There's No Such Thing As A Jaggy Snake', 'Glitter & Trauma' and 'My Recovery Injection'. Really recommend this album too, it's a must have imo.
Best Song: Glitter & Trauma
Hot Club de Paris - Drop It Till It Pops 8/10
Frantic barbershop indie rock from Sunderland. Some great songs on here, not only a really great and quite innovative band but also fantastic live. The album loses pace a bit towards the middle, but it picks up towards the end and makes up for the dreary 'Snitches Get Stitches' and equally dreary 'Hello, I Wrote A Song For You Called "Welcome To The Jungle"'.
Best Song: Sometimesitsbetternottostickbitsofeachotherineacho therforeachother
Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit - A Larum 9/10
I fell in love with this band when I heard the demo of 'Tickle Me Pink' about a year and a half ago. I've waited with baited breath for the album and i'm not disappointed. The album is so charming, catchy and toe-tappingly brilliant. 'The Box' is a fantastic song and the aforementioned 'Tickle Me Pink' is magical. Awesome album, definately buy this! For fans of Laura Marling especially.
Best Song: Tickle Me Pink
Do let me know if anyone's taken my recommendations. Mind you, these are quite well known albums, so people have probably got them already.

Cast away on a desert island
Me and poor Crusoe are sharing the same fate
Cast away on a desert island
With Great Britain written on its name plate
With my umbrella I go walking
Through all the sands on a building site
Across the shopping malls and motorways
Birds from Heathrow fill the
Night with people flying to escape
Friday comforts me and says it's pay day
Cast away on a desert island...
The game and coconuts is plentiful
You pick 'em right off of a supermarket shelf
And all the man-eaters are parked away
Down in garages
While their selfish owners drinking to escape
Lord of flies with c ocktails in his conch shell
Don't rescue me, no
This is my home sweet home dear
Don't rescue me, no
I am far from alone here
Cast away on a desert island
Me and one nation are sharing the same fate

Just embarked on a Warron Zevon binge after reading his biography 'I'll sleep when I'm dead' over Christmas. He's a bit '70's soft rock' in places for my taste, but once you know the tall tales of his life the songs take on a bit of context and some of the lyrics are fantastic.

I've recently rediscovered Justin Sandercoe on the web to do my coaching on the guitar. And while I'm practising my boring chords and trying to do the changes, I'm listening to Michael Hedges - Aerial Boundaries, again. It is utterly beautiful and melancholic. His acoustic technique is quite wonderful to hear, and it kind of gets me to play for just a few minutes more, while my fingers are hurting. Got to get those hard pads back. Sometimes I might catch him do a chord change that I can do, and it's a real thrill to get it just as he plays it. Tidies up my guitar sound no end. :)
Albums I've listened to today:
Spoon -- A Series of Sneaks
Portishead -- Third
Animal Collective -- Merriweather Post Pavilion
Animal Collective -- Sung Tongs
The National -- The National

It's on their MySpace, so you can either listen to it on their and buy the physical release or just pirate it. I did the latter. Quite good actually, not much of a change from their normal style but it's still on par with the other two albums. Stand out tracks are Ulysses, No You Girls and What She Came For.

In the last 24 hours I have listened to:
Casio Kids - who were surprisingly good live - much better than their tinny MySpace sound would suggest. They were supporting:
of Montreal - who, as ever, were high camp, hyperactive party greatness - I was tequila-ed though.
White Denim - Workout Holiday - gets better the more I listen to it.

Have to say I've always thought Eric Clapton a bit overrated. Not for his technique, just his style and the use he made of his undoubted skill. His music never blew me away as Hendrix did. But he had his high years with Cream. Jack Bruce, I did rate highly and still do. Ginger Baker, I thought was good, mad drummer that The Muppets copied for their show. Anyway, Disraeli Gears is my favourite.

No flaming from me mate. Perhaps, like a lot of oher EC work, when it comes to the crunch, I'm not as keen as I might be. For example, the album Slowhand, which I had for a couple of years, before giving it away. I never thought it much cop, but other people love it. I was always left with the feeling that EC could have done better. Just as another example, on the album, his cover of recently departed John Martyn's excellent May You Never is appallingly poor.
Don't get me wrong, EC's good. Just not that good,IMO. Cue my flaming. ;)

My guitar playing. I'm actually starting to make some strides with my chord changes. I'm doing the how many chord changes can I do in a minute exercise, for example, between C and G and back [counts as 1], and I'm up to nearly 30. Trouble is, I lose concentration if I attempt another go and I get ragged. But considering I only picked up the guitar again in the New Year [and this time I'm bloody well going to learn how to play], I think I'm doing OK. Tbh, discovering ol'Justin on the web has been the difference.

If you want a good song of practice getting to F quickly with, try Bob Dylans Hurricane. not only is F used a lot during it, the tempo piocks up as the song goes on (for 8 mins).

Don't suppose you have a tabs-link Pancake..?
The guitar has been in the family since 1973-74. Bought completely new then, it's almost in identical condition, having hardly been used. I walked into Fret Music the other day and almost laughed at the quality hanging up with typical price labels of £120 or more on them. A musician friend looked at it yesterday and reckoned way over £300, and he said he was being cautious.
Trouble is, I'm not good enough for this guitar and I know it. :(

Landrew have you tried to play the G as a bar chord (two frets up from the F) instead of open stringed? Your hand shape would then be the same for the F which would probably make more sense and would almost certainly be quicker.

Michael Hedges - Watching My Life Go By; followed quickly by Michael Hedges - Aerial Boundaries [both for the umpteenth time]. That latter one is why I picked up the guitar after 35 years of looking the other way. Now I'll never be able to play like Hedges could, but I'm OK with that. When I was a teenager, the enormity of the task, and the fact that I wanted to play well, or not at all, meant that I denied myself the chance. Well, not now. I can play badly and listen in absolute contentment to a virtuoso. The way MH got such dynamism, drama, and delicacy from a 6 stringed instrument is compensation enough.

Mash up of Queen classics and commercial hip hop
Picked up a copy of the Dark was the Night compilation on Friday and have been listening to it all weekend.
There are a few top tracks, notably from Yeasayer, Feist, The National but a few dud ones too.
Been sent this on Facebook:
It's been a long time. We shouldn't have left you...
After the touring for OLTA came to an end, we all dispersed to tend to our individual personal lives.
...And to get our ducks in a row.
Now the band has reconvened, and we are rehearsing new songs.
We find ourselves marveling at the tremendous focus
that has defined our early rehearsals for this, our 4th effort.
All kidding aside, we feel like a new band.
Once again, we have no concept to this batch of song-writing.
(We are often asked about our intentions when we set out to write music.)
There is rarely any intention to this process.
We just make the music.
And without going into too much detail, the songs sound vital.
It's as though we've hit upon a balance between our urgency and
our calm. And true to our better work, this is music that unravels over time.
We anticipate that, once it's done, you high-minded folks will welcome the music...
into your bedrooms...to swagger and breathe...
It's still early, yet, though. We will keep you posted.
In the meantime, a couple of us have kept ourselves busy with extra-curricular activities. Carlos has made a film called <http://www.myfriendstoldmeaboutyou.com/>My Friends Told Me About You and Sam has released a record with his band <http://www.magneticmorning.com/>Magnetic Morning.
And we hope that you're all weathering well the turmoil of the age.
Lovingly,
Interpol

Rendevous With Rama by Arthur C Clarke.
Made a point of recording the Classic Serial off Radio 4 online for the 2 x 1hr episode story. 20 minutes in and not bad at all.
