I will check out Orn's mix at some point but too busy at the moment. On that note, I think it would be sensible to have a thread for each mix (as before). Kind of makes it more obvious a new one is up and then comments and discussion on that don't get mixed up with general comments. IMO of course.

****ing love the System.

Im trying to compile a Spotify playlist of covers of metal songs by metal bands... help.

Mahcine Head - Hallowed... and Holy Diver by Killswitch started me off.

Rattlehead
30-04-2009, 09:48 AM
Never really got into them but loving it so far. I've had Toxicity for a while and downloaded all of their other albums in one go this week.

On the covers, good choices so far. A few suggestions mainly from my ipod:

Entombed have done some Stormtroopers Of Death covers, including March Of The SOD and Sargeant D. Heard them on Spotify actually and was impressed.
Metallica's cover of Remember Tomorrow is excellent. Metallica have done loads of decent covers actually - Last Caress, So What, Am I Evil, Breadfan, Crash Course In Brain Surgery, The Small Hours, Die Die My Darling etc... I also like their cover of Loverman by Nick Cave.
Therapy? Iron Man. I think Diane might have been a cover as well, albeit not very metal.
Testament - Nobody's Fault (Aerosmith).
Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics!). Not really a MM fan though.
Megadeth - These Boots (Nancy Sinatra?). Make sure it's the original version and not the remastered one as the latter has loads of the words beeped out for copyright reasons and 'humour'. Megadeth's covers are generally poor but this is a good one.
Bonded By Blood - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, even if it is a bit silly.
Motorhead - Louie Louie (can't remember who did the original).
Someone did a good version of Troops Of Doom by Sepultura but can't remember who.
Sepultura - Procreation Of The Wicked (Celtic Frost). This is excellent IMO.
Aerosmith - Train Kept A Rollin' (Yardbirds).
Guns N' Roses - Mama Kin (Aerosmith).
Pantera - Planet Caravan (Sabbath).
Biohazard - After Forever (more Sabbath).
Sacred Reich or Faith No More - War Pigs.
Slayer - Dissident Aggressor.
Anthrax - Antisocial.
Scott Ian of Anthrax also did a decent cover of Metallica's Welcome Home.
Chris Cornell - Billie Jean (not metal at all obviously).
Black Crowes - Hard To Handle.
Also not metal but Free's cover of Crossroads (only a live version I think) is the best I've ever heard. Might squeeze in somewhere if metal is expanded to include rock maybe. Ditto Hendrix All Along The Watchtower.
Embarrassing but Ugly Kid Joe's cover of NIB or even Cats In The Cradle. Shouldn't have mentioned that last one really.

Obviously very few of these are better than the originals but there's some really good stuff on this list. Bound to be loads more as well.

Cheers mate, will check some of those... a lot do fall outside the realms of metals songs covered by metal atrists though!

Completely forgot about the Sepultura one. Got "Hole In The Sky" for by Pantera cover 8)

Dire Straits - Dire Straits

The band's original album was something of a revelation because it was so different in the pop world at the time; and when Communique came out, I thought we'd got a superbly jazzy/folky/pop 4 piece group. But they went all mainstream, and by the time of Brothers In Arms I couldn't listen to anything they produced any longer.

But this one is very good indeed. Stand outs for me are Water Of Love, Six Blade Knife, In The Gallery, Wild West End and Lions.

Well the GD album was craaaaaaaaaaaaaap.

I've listened through it about 3 or 4 times today and it's very much American Idiot 2, which although to be expected, is still a disappointment. Pretty forgettable stuff, although not really worthy of the 14 "a"s you gave it - it was OK.

I do like track 14, something about horseshoes and handgrenades, it puts me in mind of The Hives and Terrorvision.

Listening to the debut Suicide album, which remains one of the most disturbing things I have ever heard, but I still keep going back to it time and again. Also rocking out with some Mastodon (a mix of tunes from Crack The Skye and Leviathan), and after my lunch will be listening to "Put It On The Line" by Ghostface & Trife, and the first DJ Muggs Soul Assassins record. Great times as I prepare to tuck into to a tin of Heinz Spaghetti Hoops.

I recently watched an interesting documentary about the affect of Hurricane Katrina on the music scene in New Orleans (New Orleans: Music in Exile).

Been listening to albums by the Neville Brothers and Dr. John for the last couple of days. Fantastic stuff!

Man I love the Neville Brothers, awesome indeed. I am stoked for the forthcoming David Simon tv series about musicians in post-Katrina New Orleans ("Treme") it should be essential viewing.

Today I am going all DC/angular and listening to some Jonathan Fire Eater (their first ep), Jesus Lizard "Down" and Fugazi's "In On The Kill Taker".

I think United is probably their best, though I haven't got their third one yet. Today I have listened to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - BRMC.

I was shuffling at work today and Working in A Goldmine popped onto my iPod.

That was it, I was back in the 80s with Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout and Scritti Politti and do you know what? I don't care. Floods of memories from 20+ years ago.

Don't be ashamed of your eighties heritage. Cupid And Psyche and Love are great albums.

I go back further than that (but not too much further!!!!)....I was telling a mate at work today about the Clash gig (16 Tonnes tour) at the Top Rank. That must have been 1979?

mclusky - mclusky Do Dallas.

Awesome band, awesome record. they are sadly missed. Saw them live a couple of times, very entertaining indeed.

I am listening to the "Gummo" OST, nineteen tracks of underground metal and grindcore, absolutely superb. Some of the bands, like Eyehategod, Brujeria and Sleep I have heard of, but there are some real gems from groups I have never heard before.

Depending on the battery on the old MP3 player, next I am going to chill with a bit of My Morning Jacket.
