Is it not that great? Have not yet heard it, and was very much looking foward too

Now onto Elton John - Blue Moves. One of the best things he ever did, although it was quite a low key affair. People may remember Crazy Water and Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word. But in actual fact the best tracks from my point of view are One Horse Town and Chameleon. Elton John at his best, which let's be fair, wasn't bad at all.

Marilyn Manson - The High End Of Low.
Loving this at the mo, a good combination of his (lets face it, it is really just him now) previous albums, helped in large way to Chris Vrenna dealing with drums and programming, both of which are far less over the top that previously, and Twiggys now being the guitarist - his lines are best since Berkovic (John5s were always too obvious, but I did like the work by Skold on 'Eat me, Drink Me')
I, too, was listening to the Them Crooked Vultures album last night. It is a little dull from what I have heard so far and it seems that the best parts of the album were featured as teasers on their website. I will give it a couple of listens but I am not too impressed.
Just putting it out there, could someone start up a 'Best albums/songs of 2009' thread, say, at the start of December? I can tell it's going to take me a long time to wittle stuff down this year as it's been pretty stellar.

Kraftwerk - Autobahn was brilliant. I was tempted to turn the record over and play side 2 [yes it's vinyl], but I haven't played side 2 since the late 1980's and I wasn't going to do it now.
Anyway, now my rather bad condition LP of Solid Air by John Martyn has hit the platter. And rather glorious it is too. I have two copies. This one's the ex-wife's who gave me hers.

And now it's Soft Cell's - The Singles.
I just find Marc Almond's english rendition of vocals, rather than mid-atlantic, so brilliant and refreshing. It's a factor of his singing that has never diminished. The music on this album is pure and heartfelt. I bought it sometime in 1987, I think, and I haven't played it for perhaps 10 or more years, yet it still moves my emotions, like it did when I first heard it.
Crikey, it's a greatest hits album, and it has real depth to the songs. Now that's probably a first.

Oh dear, I've dipped into my collection of BBC Goon Show LPs. This one is The Missing No.10 Downing Street. Here's an example of the script:
Major Bloodnok: 5.30[am] and Private Bog hasn't returned yet. Still too dark to see.
Mystery voice: [singing] I travel the road... who cares...
Major Bloodnok: Fan me blintz, who is it..? Hands up..!
Mystery voice: I can't put my hands up, I'm...
Major Bloddnok: HANDS UP OR I FIRE..!
Mystery Voice: OK..! ARRGH..! [Crash]
Major Bloodnok: Now what's happened..?
Mystery Voice: I was riding a bike..! [audience laughter]
Major Bloodnok: Come here. Ooooh..! Flourish me fabula..!
Mystery Voice: [high pitched] OLOLOLOLOLOLO..!
Major Bloodnok: Thank you..! Who are you, you ragged looking goon..?
Mystery Voice: Oh, are um, I'm a barrrrgh, I'm a policeman..!
Major Bloodnok: If you're a policeman, I'm Marilyn Monroe..!
Policeman [Eccles]: Oh WOOOOOWWWWWW..!
Major Bloodnok: Put me down at once..! [Audience laughter]
Policemen [Eccles]: Wait a minute, turn round.. [looks]... You're not Marilyn Monroe..!
Major Bloodnok: I told you I wasn't..! What a bitter disappointment to us both..!
and so on.
Be gentle with this comedy. It actually directly inspired Monty Python, and then almost every modern british comedy thereafter. It also looks iffy on paper but is much more comical with 3 geniuses playing with it.

I'm especially loving Aidy's Girl's A Computer by Darkstar.
Don't see what all the fuss is about with Florence & The Machine. Yes, she's got an amazing voice but her songs are cynically over produced and cleverly aimed at the sort of market that love to lap up the sort of kooky image she portrays. Her original demos are far better than anything she's released since the record companies came along waving money and promises in her face.
Oh, and if I hear that cover of You've Got The Love once more on 6 Music I'm kicking my digital radio out the kitchen window.
And oh again - Boomkat can prove an expensive habit.

I was very pleased to get the Idle Race CD and also a retrospective of Simon Dupree and the Big Sound. Before they went all "Pop" with "Kites" etc they were a really good R & B type band. I saw them a couple of times at The "old" Concorde Club at The Bassett. Their first album "Without Reservations" (1969) was excellent. This double cd (Part of My Past)includes both the stereo and mono mixes of that album plus loads of other stuff. Those were the days!!

I just listened via BBC i-player to a Radio 2 programme by Bob Harris called The Songs The Beatles Gave Away. It's about songs written by John, Paul and George which were were recorded by other artists. Some of the songs were leftovers; some were written to order. I was familiar with most of the songs, but there are few rarities featured on there, and several demo recordings featuring Paul and George.
The interviews heard feature Paul, George, George Martin, Johnny Gentle, Cilla Black, Mary Hopkin and Jackie Lomax.
The music features Johnny Gentle, Billy J. Kramer, The Fourmost, Cilla Black, Peter & Gordon, The Applejacks, The Strangers, P.J. Proby, Chris Barber, the Black Dyke Mills Band, Mary Hopkin, Jackie Lomax, Carlos Mendes and Doris Troy.
This programme is available on BBC i-player until Saturday, Dec. 5th. It's an hour long. Worth a listen, if you're a Beatles fan.

No I haven't. My only gripe with that vinyl album is that it was a tad undynamic. That is, although it has a reasonably quiet noise floor, it doesn't go loud. It's a possibility that a strange studio, to Anderson, brought about that effect.
Happily, the Aqualung album has so much variety, skill and scope that one tends to overlook the quiet nature of it, and turn the volume up accordingly.

After all these years, I still love it. I can NOT play it for years, and then put it on, and it is crisp and new. I think this might be my favourite TMB album, but I'm about to put Every Good Boy Deserves Favour on [note musicians], and this is the most assessible TMB album, so we'll see how it goes. But I digress. While watching, I noted how many excellent tunes were being played in the background. There was excellent stuff by Nick Drake, Beach Boys, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.. and quite a few notable others. I ended up listening as much as watching.

But... but... everyone's going out and buying this one tune, because someone has organised it as a reaction to the mass-marketed pop that would otherwise be Christmas number 1... and a song with the refrain '**** you, I won't do what you tell me'... And if anyone really, honestly was that anti-corporate they would neither know nor care what was at number 1 in the pop charts... and... and...

Jeez, I just said it would make me believe that a Facebook group could actually achieve something. I'm not going to buy it.
Sorry Uncle Ponty, it wasn't really directed at you, just at the campaign itself which all of my Facebook friends have asked me to join. I'm not going to buy it either.

Pancake, I take it all this music IS in the background. You aren't actually listening to it while doing nothing else, yes..?
Pedant alert: Disraeli
As for myself, I got The Pretenders - Pretenders II album going.

Unlucky? I set the Spotify folder up!
Particular favorites being:
Little Drummer Boy - Bing and Bowie
Feliz Navidad - Jose Feliciano
Silver Bells - Bing again
And of course Last Christmas by Wham!

Manic Street Preachers version of Last Christmas is rather good IMHO.

Hyped up twaddle. How can an album with so much going on be so bland and insipid ? Made for Radio 1 daytime and Radio 2. The real life version of ****ing "Josh's " band on that T-mobile advert and just as irritating.

Talk Talk - Spirit of Eden
First time I've heard this in years, absolutely gorgeous stuff. In general, pop bands would be a much more palatable bunch if they all grew up to produce avant-guard post-rock masterpieces. My overwhelming thought is what a huge influence it must have had on Ladies and Gentleman… by Spiritualized.

Word.
Which pop bands would you pick? I'm looking forward to Busted's double-album of excoriating white noise guitar with hand-bells and clapping.

Also, if RATM hit the number 1 spot this Christmas I will never mock the power of a Facebook group again. This is something I do frequently.
According to Pop*****, the RATM song is on the same label as the X Factor song, so they win either way. Rumour is that Simon Cowell has bought the publishing rights.

They've got three LPs and one Covers album, so I would say just start with the debut album 'Rage Against The Machine', with 'Bombtrack' and 'Killing in the Name' tracks that you may have heard from it.
And don't forget to get them to Christmas No. 1!
F*** you, I won't do what you tell me....

I think the Delgados got their name from the Spanish Tour de France cyclist Pedro Delgado Robledo 'cos Alun Woodward was a big cycling fan; hence the name of the album; Peleton.
Apart from that, I'm not sure what they're doing now, I thought they'd packed it all in and Emma Pollock went off on her own.

1) A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi - a classic Christmas album for jazz lovers.
2) Phil Spector's Christmas album, which has been re-released many, many times. It features popular Christmas songs done in Spector's familiar wall-of-sound production style with Darlene Love, The Ronettes, The Crystals, and Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans.
