Vista ultimate 32 or 64bit

I'm going to upgrade from XP to Vista ultimate, and I know that my hardware supports 64-bit, but I read somewhere that you need 6GB memory to get the best out of it. I only have 4GB at the moment, and can't afford to upgrade both so would I be better going for the 32bit version?

I've worked on a few 64bit OS's with 16GB of RAM and seen very little difference in general operation so it depends on what your main uses are for your system.

I'm no expert - but I think some games don't work on 64bit OS. I'm quite a gamer myself and use 32bit with no problems. I'm sure even games that do support it don't benefit from it. Certainly not much anyway. I wouldn't fuss about with it - go with what most people have got. Get 32bit! If there was a massive advantage more people would have it. If you used programs that actually used that 4GB of RAM of course it would be different.

Download..? I think you'd be better off having the official disc[s] in your hand. Far safer. But I agree with thesaint_sfc, there just seems to be no point in 64bit at present. Nobody is making the jump where 64bit is significantly better than 32bit.

it's an official microsoft download, they do also send discs for an extra £8.95, but I'm just not patient enough to wait for the mail, so I have Vista Ultimate 32-bit and Office 2007 ultimate on my 8Gb memory stick for installation when I get home tonight :cool:

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt :) I ordered the discs too, but couldn't wait. There was a download option, and as it would only take 20 minutes to download the 3Gb files at work, it seemed silly not to take advantage!

I don't mind at all. Both Vista and Office cost just under £100 all in with back up discs included.

F*cking cheap! Cost me about £169 for Ultimate not too long ago I'm sure.

We used to have work at home rights on office XP, but I think microsoft got a bit worried about piracy, so came up with this deal.
