am a bit of a connisseur (sp) when it comes to pear ciders, if i do say so myself!!!
Brothers and Bulmers are nice, but don't actually taste of pears
Kopperberg is very nice and more importantly tastes of pears
but the King of them all has to be (without a shadow of a doubt) St Helier...........tis light, refreshing and goes down an absolute treat!! (bit like an ex of mine!! ) LOL!!!;)

You are no connisseur at all.St Helier is f***ing awful.Brothers Festival Strength is the most supreme Perry on the market.Failing that Weston's Perry is very good too.

The last cider I had was Kopperberg pear cider and I found that most agreeable :).
The last one before that was Strongbow circa 1983 on Merryoak veracity with Paul Gardiner and a few others, I was very ill the next day.

**Warning** Widow maker stuff though!

Unfortunately it's a bit too sweet for me though. The Weston's Extra Dry is very refreshing as is their Perry, but at 7.4% it makes for a short evening or a very addled one.

I rather like Thatcher's Cheddar Valley Scrumpy and was drinking Black Rat at the weekend which had an argument with me in the morning.

It's funny how cider snobbery has developed again.

For years the only stuff you could get in a supermarket or pub was Strongbow, Woodpecker or Bulmers. Then Magners kicked off the new mass interest in the drink by advertising but many people think Magners is the cider equivalent of Carling so all these speciality ones have appeared on the mass market though they were in existence before anyway.

I'm a bit of a snob tbf... if it recommends pouring the cider over ice, it's probably ****e that is sold on marketing to kids! So I avoid it!

Addlestones is a rather lovely cider. And I had one down in Cornwall recently called Rattler which was fantastic but I don't know if it's available anywhere else. I haven't seen it available in Sheffield anyway.

And I have to agree with Scott - Anybody who thinks Strongbow is the best cider available really needs to switch off the TV and get out and try some others. Strongbow is the cider equivalent of Carling or Fosters... Weak, tasteless, mass-marketed p1sswater!

Neil

To summarise:

Avoid Strongbow / Magners / Bulmers / Kopparberg / St Helier / etc.

Westons is good, and available in supermarkets.
Black Rat is good from the local area.
Try anything traditional / local / non-mass marketed. Not just for the sake of it, but because it is likely to taste much better once you've acquired the taste for it (may not be instant, but give it a chance).
Only problem is you're struggling in most local pubs. Visit a beer/cider festival to get some ideas.

Aspall Organic Suffolk Cyder is an homage to our founder Clement. This cyder has a higher bittersweet content than all our others, so is much closer in style to his cyder of the 1700’s.

Organic has an attractive golden colour; a marked fruity aroma of traditional bittersweet cyder apple, with floral and spicy overtones. The palate is rich, initially full and slightly sweet, with good balancing acidity and a pronounced astringency followed by a very long dry finish.

This is a superb cyder which we are sure Clement would be proud of.

Goes well with strong cheddars, Blue Stilton and pungent, ripe French cheeses.

ABV 7%

Best I have had and which I pine for now was from the Cider Bus at Glastonbury.Apparently it is there every year, they had medium sweet which was just luverrly, dry which wasn't and then in the evening when it got chilly they had Mulled Cider. That WAS the business.
No idea who's cider it actually was, never could read that well by the time we made it there each day:-)

This is the only decent stuff I can lay my hands on out here. It is nice enough but wish they'd import more types (other than Blackthorn and Strongbow). The few 'hard ciders' they brew here still taste (very much like their beer) of ****.

Cider used to be as popular as beer was over here before prohibition, but was almost never heard of again after the ban lifted, not sure why. FACT.

Thatchers Gold - Crisp reasonable strength
Thatchers Katy - A lady I have fallen in love with over 7% and tastes like apple juice
Old Rosie - Brewed by Westons aquired taste lose all sense in tongue
Black Rat - Very nice quite strong
Stowford Press -
Addlestones - Longer in barrel stronger it gets.

The ultimate though in my humble Bristolian opinion has got to be Natch, £1.30 a pint in my local, still poured from a flagon and can strip paint from 30 yards...........although you wont remember the evening after 5 pints!!!!!!!

Woohoo.

I have just found out that I am going to be getting a very large quantity of free (apart from a days work) cider.

Me and a small group of friends are going to a farm next Sunday where we will picking as many apples as we like from thr orchard then using the farmers mill/press to produce the juice. The farmer has said that we just need to give him half the juice that we make. He has said that we can take as like. To give us an idea of the size of his orchard he said that last year he sold over 20 tons of apples to Thatchers.

He is also willing to sell us some of his left over stuff from a couple of years ago at very competitive prices.

Happy days

LV have you not tried Hornsbys? They do "Hard apple" and "Draft" i believe, both around 5% ABV.
As for the ultimate cider, the award goes to "K". Black can red "K", and at 8.4% ABV it gets the job done. Tescos is about the only place you can buy it.
I also love Aspals.
But "K" wins hands down IMHO with Merrydown Gold a close second.

I have a bottle of Hornsbys in the fridge...it's been there for over a year....
It doesn't work for me I'm afraid.

Luckily I do have an offy a few blocks away who stock Magners, which is good enough for me!

Used to drink K a lot in my youth, haven't drunk it since then though. It certainly got the job done though.

The Aspall's was very tasty and strong...but now I have none.

I tend to mix the 2 Hornsbys as i find it tastes better. Untill this year you could still get K on the west coast from a store chain called Publix. They have now gone over to Magners and Strongbow with a few Woodpecker on the shelf as well. I have also brought Dry Blackthorn from Trader Joes.

I've noticed recently at away games that alot of clubs sell cider on match days these days which is a nice change from Carling or smooth bitter.

Addlestones is a rather lovely cider. And I had one down in Cornwall recently called Rattler which was fantastic but I don't know if it's available anywhere else. I haven't seen it available in Sheffield anyway!

I think bottles of Cornish Rattler are available in Morrisons, but not sure if it is all over the country!!

I don't see why any club, including SFC, shouldn't stock cider on a match day if there is a strong enough demand for it. It's not the preserve of **** heads now is it ? it's a very popular social drink ;)

Well I've not long finished off my bottle of Aspalls Suffolk Cyder and it was bloody lovely, and that's coming from someone who's a non cider drinker.
I had a bottle of 1664 afterwards and there's no comparison, I think I may get more aquainted with Aspalls in the future..........nice one :smt033
I might try Westons next week :-k

Im glad you liked it.

No, never even saw their own brand, i will be sure to check it out when i am in LV in April.
As a point of interest, where can you get Magners in LV? We tend to do all our shopping at Vons or Wal-Mart (i know Wal-Mart is crap but she likes it ;o) ).

It's an independent liquor/wine store in the south of town towards Anthem. I found it by just calling a bunch of stores in the area and as I was about to give up, got lucky!

WalMart is very useful, just know the right time to go to avoid the masses. Target is better though.

Is Target a supermarket chain LV?
I will put it in my satnav when we are in LV next April and check it out, failing that Vons usually manages to keep me in cider.
The best chain for cider on the East coast is Publix, you actually get a choice of 5 or 6 there.

5 litre of supermarket apple juice
packet of ale yeast
200g sugar

Sling 4 litres of apple juice in the 5 litre demijohn, put 1/2 litre into a saucepan and dissolve the sugar in it before adding this to the 4 litres already in the demijohn. Shake the hell out of it, wait to cool and add yeast, shake the hell out of it and let it go about it's fine work. Once it starts to clear add the remaining 1/2 litre juice and siphon into 500ml glass bottles, leave a week in the warm and then down in the cold.

Apart from a very few pubs the only place to get decent cider or perry is at a beer festival. Maybe at the odd farmers' market (Mr Whiteheads) or farm if you are in the West Country.

It's weird that a mass produced over marketed fizzy fruit juice like Magners has actually sparked an interest in the traditional drink. Always sells out at festivals.

Went to Westons Cider Factory in Much Marcle last weekend, did you know Fred Wests' family home is only 1/4 mile away from the factory, the home where he cut off his 1st wife's & childs head and buried her in the garden. Also he admitted to 20 other victims which were never found, all buried around the orchards of Weston's. So don't be too surprised if one day you get a bit of head on your scrumpy.

You should go here if you are ever in Sussex. Dozens of ciders and perrys. You pick up a little tasting glass on the way in and can try as many as you like before buying (dont even have to ask, just open the tap).

I bought a can of Black Sheep Ale last weekend at Bitterne triangle offy. Started pouring only to find cider inside! That's never happened before with any drink.

I contacted the brewery and they are concerned enough to request I post the can ASAP, not least because they normally only retail at Tesco.
I drank the cider anyway! No ill effects so far.
