Potential Record Signing?
Reports in The Daily Mirror and more reputable sources such as Sky Sports News have declared that a bid in the region of £7 million has been made for Burnley's talismanic striker. If signed, scorer of 15 league goals last season Rodgriguez would offer another type of striker to our repertoire. He is regarded by Burnley fans as a potential scorer of a variety of goals including long range drives, close range headers and tap ins. He would certainly offer a more unstable element to our forward line to compliment Rickie Lambert's hold-up play and dead ball ability, Sharp's fox-in-the-box instincts and Tadanari Lee's energy.
Rodriguez owes his exotic sounding name to his father, Spaniard Kiko Rodriguez, a former Deportivo La Coruna player who also had a short spell at Burnley. During Kiko's time in the north west he met his wife, Carol, after which they settled in Burnley and raised their son Jay.
Rodriguez junior broke into the Burnley first team at the age of 18 and after loan spells at Stirling Albion and Barnsley he established himself in the Claret's first team. Rodriguez didn't play for Burnley in a Premiership fixture during their brief spell in the top flight two years ago but has managed to score 29 championship goals since their relegation to the Championship.
A prolific forward and considered by some to be a future England International, his potential signing could destroy our previous record transfer of £4 million for midfielder Rory Delap which has stood now for eleven years.
It had been previously reported that Saints have been interested in Rodriguez, particularly last August but reports are now stronger then they have ever been. It has been reported by the Southern Daily Echo that Jay-Rod (as he is affectionately known by his Clarets team-mates) is currently on holiday in Mexico and will finalise the transfer once he returns next week.
SaintsWeb will continue to monitor developments as they happen.
