I think most young boys think this of their home towns no matter where they live. Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham all have better nightlife than Southampton but I expect there are skinny little spotty freaks bored of them too.
How do you rate it?
Personally I think it sucks! We have 1 sh*tty club which is Ikon with a paint job. All the Bars in Bedford Place are basically the same these days trying to be posh and new. We never get any big name decent DJ's down (Apart from junk on Saturdays) but now Junk have stopped selling beer on tap so have to buy rip off bottles. We need a big promoter to run a night down here with a top name DJ. Oceana is just the same every single weekend with the same music.

I thought the era of superstar djs was supposed to be over?
dont like it, dont go out..simples
Hang on here. You seem to have something wrong here. A forum is not a place for little Shane to state as fact what things are or are not. No, no not at all. It is a place for debate or opinion. The very thing you are suggesting I do not do is totally against the very point of a forum. You do get that don't you?

That article states that Judge Jules is yesterday. He is actually at the peak of his career and actually never stops. Events sell out and travels the globe on a weekly basis. Also his night at Eden is one of the biggest nights in Ibiza and has been for the last 5 years.

Funny how times changed, we never worried about the venue in the 60's , 70's just having a good time.
When Southampton got boring drive or coach trip to Bournemouth or Brighton
Bring back DJ Rayvonne, now that was a class act in Southampton.
The nightlife in Porstmouth is very good.
v bar for £1 shots, walkabout is great, lots of other pubs of different types, route 66 if you don't mind getting sticky feet, and liquid and envy. Down towards the sea front you've got bar blu and some 'gentlemens club' - although I can't comment on those two as I haven't been to either. Obviously there's also everything at gunwharf including the casino. I like the nightlife in Portsmouth. I'm sure everyone has their favourate places where they had their best nights out![]()
It's funny how I think the night life in Southampton has changed over the years, probably to do with me getting older.
When I was 16/17, we used to crawl the top end of town, frequenting Toad in the Park, Square, Yates', Walkabout, and occasionally Jaks and Ikon etc, because we thought these were the cat's fanny and didn't know any better.
As a student in Southampton, I grasped the Bedford Place area and made it my home. I absolutely loved the Academy, the best club we've had in my opinion. It was perfect for students and the youngsters now have really missed out now it has become the monstrosity that is Reflex. I've only been in there once and hated every single minute of it. I don't understand why it's so popular. Kaos was another good one too.
These days, when I'm in Southampton, I only ever really go to Lennons, Unit 22 or Vodka Revolutions (preferably on Mondays because of 'flip a coin' night. I guess that's just the way I have evolved, choosing places to go because the music is good, not because of the prestige a place has within social circles.
However, the downside to indie clubs is the calibre of totty on offer. Most are complete dregs, apart from the odd indie Cindy, and most of the people in Unit 22 are absolute w*nkers.
Junk is too expensive and haven't really enjoyed myself in there for well over a year now and, upon learning that they no longer sell draught beer on this thread, I really doubt I will be going there any time soon.
My favourite place to go is the SoBar in the summer (when the Soton Uni students have gone away.) The garden is fantastic and the music is top notch.
The worst place is Jesters. A horrid, horrid hole full of the worst possible people on earth. It makes me sick just thinking about it. I know some people love the place but I have had a truly dreadful experience each time I have gone there. Sick, sick, sick.

Lennons, is that The Onslow as was,in Onslow Road ?
As for the age thing,I agree it changes your take.I can't comment too much on Southampton, but in Cheltenham some time ago everywhere seemed to be overrun by plebby adolescents, and worse of all everywhere seemed designed to cater exclusively for that market.
It seems you are judging the cities nightlife on just the dance music scene S13, which, granted- is cr@p.
There's a bigger picture though. It depends on what people want from a night out really.
Live music- Sh1t, because there aren't any decent venues. Few good places for local bands to play though.
Different types of music- Sh1t for dance, not really any stand out venues for Indie/rock either but a few small ones. Good for MOBO though I suppose- RnB and hip hop basically everywhere you go!
It's good for a general night out I suppose and it is easily good enough for "the masses" of the younger generation with lots of choice for average bars and small clubs. Not a great city for any "scenes" though.
I think it's these places (average, "trendy", run of the mill mini clubs that play commercial RnB/Hip hop/dance) that seem to be doing the best from what I've seen in recent times. I bet they're alot less worried than "big clubs" in these tricky times of the recession etc.
But the thing is they are not busy. Oceana is at the moment just because it's "new"
Ikon failed to pull in 250 people on a Saturday night despite being able to hold about 800. People just got bored of the same sh*t every weekend. Oceana is the same, it is the same music every single weekend and they never put on any special nightclub events. (Well they brought in Calum Best) Oceana are making the same mistakes Ikon did, The locals will get bored and not go and they put nothing on to attract people further afield.
Level 41 never opens in the week, Only on weekends and not really overly busy. In fact I think they will fail and shut down. Buddha is doing well so far, Purely down to good location IMO. If Buddha and Level 41 swapped places then Level 41 would do better than Buddha.
Well maybe it should be looked at from another angle. Perhaps the recession is causing people to stay away and the drop in numbers makes the venue shyte. It is normally a good crowd that make a night out decent, take that away and any venue comes across as hollow. Lowe's fault?
Exactly and they need to do something to get a big crowd. They have a £9m club but all they can do is get is some tacky dancers and Calum Best. If Oceana doesn't want to follow Ikon then they need to put on a few big nights in the year. If for instance they booked say Armin Van Buuren, Jules, Deadmou5 or any of the other big players it may not atract the local crowd but they would definitely sell out with clubbers travelling from around the UK. Clubbers would happily travel around the UK for a decent night and a decent act.
It's just a shame that when they rebuilt Ikon into Oceana they took away the big "club room" feel. Icehouse now looks like any other liquid, envy, ikon around the UK.
