How will we cope without Pulis showing the youth how to go on the ****?

Not a good week for the Pulis family then!!

No shocks in the retained list. I guess any debate will centre around whether or not Gobern and Connolly manage to agree new deals.

Shame about McNish, he looked like he might break through under Pardew.

But very glad with the renewals, shame about the youth players though weren't Tafazolli, McNish and Argent highly rated though?

Did Anthony Pulis ever really exist? I think he was a tax dodge invented by the bean counters and his write-down value is now zero, so he just disappears!

No complaints there. I'm really beginning to think we wont see much transfer action this summer. Two players possibly, but two very good one's I hope.

So Harding's contract was automatically renewed and not up for discussion- would have used this opportunity to tie him down to a longer deal.

But no contract termination for Forecast? Too costly or Adkins rates him ?

Would have preferred longer contracts for Martin and Harding to be honest, but other than that perfect.

So the club is going to make offers to Connolly and Gobern which they may or may not accept? In other words, the ball will be in their court?

Yep. If they didn't want to keep them, they would have just been released.

Suspect Connolly will have been offered some sort of pay as you play deal, which may or may not be acceptable to him?

think we need to offer Gobbern a contract to get a fee if he goes elsewhere

Good to see we're keeping a lot of the squad together, this'll be the 3rd year with most of the squad playing together. Can only be a good thing.

Shame to see some of the young'uns getting released, but they're all good players and will be snapped up in no time.

    No more Pulis either

If Saints were to do a Norwich they may not be needed long term so no point burdening the club with long contracts ala Forecast.

Except should we get promoted next season players like Harding would be in demand and we could get a decent fee for him.

the one year automatic extension would not prevent further discussions about improved contract

Yep, he's only 20 so as he's under 24 if we offer him a contract equal to his previous deal and he chooses not to sign it, we get a tribunal-decided fee when he signs for somewhere else, which is intended as compensation for our development costs in training the player from youth. Just like we did with Leon Best when he went to Coventry.

I think the only thing worth discussing from the list is the trigger points for the automatic renewals - I'm assuming that Harding, Butterfield and Martin either had promotion clauses giving them an extra year, or they hit a certain number of appearances. If that's the case I would imagine Martin's figure was quite low...

Looks like those one year clauses were based on promotion to the NPC, they may still leave.

I wish we'd get rid of forecast.

I wonder what will happen to Mills.

All the automatic renewals are nice and sensible, im not hardings biggest fan but an automatic extension says more than enough (I assume Martin only needed a few appearances which was made up a bit at the start of the season anyway). Butterfield is the best news there!

Hope we get something sensible agreed with Connelly like Jaidi have really shown a bit of experience and maturity to overall pay off

    Appearances
    Martin 12
    Butterfield 37
    Harding 43

with all these renewals and few likely to leave it means there is going to be very little turnover of players. A settled squad is going to help us, but I can't half think that we need to sign two or three that really are going to improve us. But where are we short on bodies?

  33. Default

keeps getting better and better - we'd do well to sign that young Connolly for sure

  34. Default

Looks like a sensible list. I suspect that there will be more coming in at youth level as we strengthen that group to provide us the players for the future

I read on a thread, maybe the Saints player awards thread, that Butterfield's was renewed as he played 25 games.

What makes you say that, about a lack of activity?

I can see Martin going out in loan for part of the season

add to that list Nguessen (spl) and Stevens loans finishing. Room for a few more I would suggest

Surprised to see Calum McNish on the released list. I remember seeing him on soccer am doing that skillz school thingy and the boy had obvious talent. I understand that skill is not everything but it's just a shame to see any young player not make it.

    Anyone know the reason why?

Just by looking at the squad we are quite deep in numbers in all areas. Only really light in CM & CF, but even they wouldn't be that light if Gobern and Connolly sign on. Think at most we'll get a new CB, CM & CF.

if his brief showing in the first team were anything to go by he looked like David McGoaldraught, only less busy if that is at all possible.

Is Guly going to be regarded as our cover right midfield? I know he scored some vital goals from that position, but boy did he look uncomfortable out there at times and defensively he was woeful IMO.

Yes I saw him play in a pre season friendly but he was carried off after a half an hour or so

From what I've seen of Gobern, in particular at Brentford, he must be amazing in training to see him still in negotiation. I can't see the point of him myself.

Holmes comes back to replace N'Guessen and Gobern/Morgan back to replace Stephens.

    3 GK (Davis, Bart, Forecast)
    3 RB (Butterfield, Richardson, Stephens)
4 CB (Fonte, Jaidi, Martin, Seaborne)
4 LB (Harding, Dickson, Mills, Reeves)
    2 LM (Lallana, Holmes)
    2 RM (Guly, Chamberlain)
4 CB (Hammond, Morgan, Chaplow, Gobern)
5 CF (Lambert, Barnard, Connelly, Forte, Noble)

The squad looks about the right size to me with Mills possibly leaving. Lallana, Guly, Forte and Dickson offer some extra cover.
If we are going to bring a CM in, then Gobern will leave won't he?
Up front relies on Connelly being fit otherwise we might be stretched. The same applies at left midfield with Holmes, although Dickson does OK there.
Noble to get a full season out on loan?

He, like Martin needs a full season of games.

this is all assuming that we dont transfer list anyone. If we have to rely on Holmes then we will struggle. I am also not convinced by Forte and Gobern.

I still think we will sign 3-4 good NPC quality players...whether that is on frees or not
