Interesting interview with Francona regarding his departure, Henry not returning his calls for a long time.

Lots of baseball previews and baseball talk popping up these days. Opening Day is next week.

I still haven't seen anything that indicates if there is a team who is the favorite, but all of the usual suspects are involved I think. Possibly the Angels, but I think that's more based on the hype of having Pujols than anything else.

Next week? Awesome. Will have to try and find a live feed - is it Oakland over in Japan?

Wednesday April 4th at 7:00 pm Eastern
    St. Louis at Miami

Although I notice that Miami travels to Cincinnati the next day, so it's a strange one-off Opening Day.
A bunch of teams start Thursday and the rest follow on Friday.

I don't know what MLB is doing with this schedule - it seems about 6 days later than normal and a strange staggered start. Maybe they are taking hints from the NFL or something, but that would be weird because the NFL got their ideas from MLB.

    Still...it'll be fun.

Great win for the Mariners then, Ichiro on his homecoming was brilliant as ever.

Gaah! Sorry I lied to you, CrazyDiamond.

Yes, as you've found out, baseball's opener was last night in Japan. They play again tonight, too, with Fat Bartolo Colon going up against Jason Vargas.

No worries! I watched the opening inning of Mets v Nationals in Spring Training - can't be bothered to watch anymore, I'm here for the real deal! Still, you can watch it free here: http://mlb.mlb.com/shared/flash/medi...teId=&team=mlb

Disappointing to see Bobby V miss out on an opening day win. Never mind.

Encouraging performance from Lester - but hope this is not a taste of the post-Papelbon era - must be tough for Aceves being thrown into the closer's spot when everyone has had him down for a possible starting slot.

    Come on youuuuu Reds.

An easy win that was clinically finished off. 1 down. 161 to go. I reckon the Reds can def win the NL Central.

    http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/?tci...ate=08/08/2012

On Fri Aug 10 Reds @ Cubs at 2.20pm. Athletics @ White Sox 8.10pm. Both grounds are on the Red CTA (tube) line so easy to get between the 2. Anyone up for a double header in Chicago then?

Broncos @ Bears in the 1st pre-season game is down for one day 9-13 Aug. Hoping it's not on that Friday so could tie that in with the trip as well.

Just a shame the Chicago Fire are away that weekend or could have praps have chucked that in there as well.

Cinco Ocho closed out the ninth in very nice style in Phillies opener, retiring the batters in order, following Doc Halliday's eight scoreless innings against the Pirate crew.

162 game winning season coming up ...

Can the season finish now? The AL East is looking mighty fine with Liverpool & Man Utd down the bottom without a win between them:

    http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/standings/ind..._mlb_standings

I wonder what team the Liebherr's will take over? I reckon they should go for the White Sox and rename them the Chicago Red 'n' White Sox. I'd support them.

The Cleveland Browns are owned by Randy Lerner who also owns Aston Villa. I wouldn't mind it if the Liebherr's took over the Cleveland Indians to get a little Cleveland/Premier League* double rivalry. It'd be weird but fun.

*you know, assuming that SFC is in the Premier League at some point. Not necessarily next year. But eventually. Oh no sir - it's not me saying they will be in the Premier League next year. Not me at all. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Why on earth would they be interested in Baseball, one of the world's most obtuse games.I try to watch it but tbh watching paint dry is more spectacular.Firkers hit about one ball out of every 6 or 7

Pretty good game going on in Detroit at the moment, between two undefeated teams (admittedly with 158 games to play after this one!). Watched the opening game from Japan, but this is the first game I've been able to watch since. Too early to form much of an opinion on where teams are going, but it does seem the Red Sox pitching staff is not where they might want it to be.

Yep - took the edge off my pain at the Reading defeat as I switched over and caught the Red Sox 8 runs in the 8th inning. I'm off to Fenway Park for tomorrow's game - hope Bucholz can find some form - and I hope even more that I have a spring in my step after some good news from Upton Park.

I'm just getting into the game. Excellent coverage on ESPN America. I may be asking some "stupid" questions from time to time if you don't mind. Haven't picked a team yet though.

Well, I've been sort of 'into' the game for just over three years and I still ask 'stupid' questions from time to time.

Shame it doesn't look like that good news is coming out of Upton Park - but hey ho, Pompey are down. Every cloud and all that...

Yesss. Another win for the mighty Red Sox. I'm not a fan of Tampa Bay so it's even sweeter!

I hear there's not much love out there for the Rays by the neutrals out there in the States either.

Also, just caught up with Damon signing for the Indians. How do we all think that's going to pan out?

Looks like I was a bit previous with my Pompey Down call - two goals in injury time FFS. Anyway - enjoyable afternoon at Fenway despite a shaky start from Buchholz. It was raining Home Runs toward the end, and the Rays bullpen certainly needs some work.

As for Damon - who cares - if someone wants to give him another payday then good luck to him. Doubt he'll make much of an impact though

So is it much like when a football team signs an older player, is it just for experience to firm the side up?

Another win for the Red Sox. Woop.

I think it is more than that - if his mindset is right then having Damon around will definitely be good for some of the younger guys - but they also genuinely hope Damon can be productive offensively. It is a calculated risk - from what I have read the Indians have only committed about $1.5m to this deal with add-ons depending on appearances etc. Considering Damon was probably commanding closer to $10m a year a few years back - and got $5m last year with the Rays - it seems like a decent bit of business by the Indians.

Bit of a borefest in yesterday's 1-0 loss, but Bard looked good as a starter. Have to say Bobby V screwed up leaving him in too long.

As the Indians fan around here, I can tell you that I'm lukewarm. The Indians are having a massive problem with getting hits, so maybe he'll help. He can't really hurt, you know? The Indians are rather young, so having him in the clubhouse will help with experience, but I don't think he's there for 'leadership' as you can't bring in a guy half-way through the season and expect him to be leading the guys around. And the report I'm reading says Damon is going to to their Spring Training complex first for a while, and then likely to their AAA squad in Columbus, so he won't actually be on the Indians for a while.

Essentially, I think most Indians fans are of the attitude of "hey if he helps then great and if not then who cares?"

Nice streak by the Red Sox there until the White Sox decided to win one. I've been told by Josh Chetwynd to only start worrying when May comes around and we're not doing well. Just another day to go then...!

The way Crawford played last season, it is not much of a loss at all. He has yet to deliver for the Red Sox.....so if and when he finally does, it will be something of a bonus.

Grand Slam aside....Youk has not seemed right this year. On the plus side, Ortiz is in the groove much earlier than usual and players like Aviles, Ross and McDonald are providing a surprising boost to the offence. Bobby V seems to be finally getting a rapport with the players so if the pitching rotation can find some consistency then this season might not turn out so bad after all.

Fantastic to see the Nats wipe the smile fo the smug, arrogant Philly fans. Nats are for real this season.....7 series win out of 8 and the big question is who will make way when Zimmerman, Morse, Chiang all come back. And Bryce Harper - reminds me so much of kevin Pietersen (including the terrible haircut!).

    Lets go Nats!

After last night, the Cleveland Indians are 26-19 and in first place. We've been playing great and it looks to be a decent season.

However, after the same number of games played last year, the Cleveland Indians were 30-15 and in a commanding lead in first place. They did not even finish last year above .500.

I don't know what this means. We've got the worst attendance in all of baseball so far because of the steady disappointment and heartache that seasons like last year bring to the fans. We've got our closer who is blasting the fans for not coming out to the park and supporting the team due to this, which doesn't bode well for the general malaise found around town. I dunno - I guess this is just how it is. Hopefully we will keep winning and the fans will start to show up and start to believe.

what a year this is turning out to be for the Nats.....crushing all who come before them. Saint76er...where are you, oh yeah,.........10 games back and the sniors at Philly falling apart! Nats with the second best record in MLB....who would have thought that?

Yeah Washy, who would have thunk it .. not me. Anyway, Nats have done a good job putting together an exciting young roster, but you get that chance eventually when you are perennial losers. Just watch out if injuries bite, as you can be decimated like the Phils have been this year and go backwards in a hurry. Enjoy it while you can, as normal service should be resumed next season ...
