Default Your worst away day from our time in the wilderness

For me it's got to be Colchester United. Souless subuteo ground in the middle of a swamp, and our fans were embarrassingly uninterested. Most seemed to arrive on coaches and just sat there in silence looking miserable.

Tranmere, both times, although the skate getting his nose broken after the 1st game made it a tad more tolerable.

2nd game of 2009/10 lost 3-1 to Huddersfield. Grzegorz Rasiak played his last game for the club and looked completely uninterested. On the plus side, got to see Rickie score his first Saints goal.

I walked out to the ground but overshot. I was well into open countryside and heading for Ipswich before bumping into a steward on his way to work.

Highlight was singing 'where are ya, where are ya' in the fog.

Remember him being thrown out, lol. How did he come by the nose job?

Stayed overnight and had an enjoyable exploration of the old docks the following morning.

Brentford away. Dire game, freezing cold. Sat the entire game with my feet in a deep puddle in the upper tier of the stand. Were leading 1-0 then threw it away.

Good pub on the river nearby though.

When he left so did some of ours. I believe they discussed the error of his ways.

We walked past him, sat on the kerb with blood pooling around him, & laughed.

The away defeats I saw in League One were tempered by the fact that, by and large, they were blips - the club was on an upward trajectory by then. For me it'd have to be one of the away defeats in 2008/09 - can't be more specific than that I'm afraid, I've repressed most of my memories from that season!

Away at Walsall, March 2011. Utterly superior against a poor side... a genius goalkeeping display kept them in. Was desolate after that night.... in the end that cold night on a midland industrial estate didn't matter.

Feeling for the guys that went to Hartlepool/Charlton only for it to be called off.

Rotherham away Carling Cup 2008/09. Miserable Tuesday night, only got to the ground a few minutes before kick-off. Terrible game, terrible ground, terrible view, second best from start to finish. Only highlight was Stern John's goal. Sad thing was it was so predictable. We always used to cave in to lower league teams in the cup. Think I'm right in saying that was Michael Svensson's last game. Not the best way to bow out

Agree about Colchester and Tranmere. Swansea from 2008/09 was another shocker too.

One of Tranmere (both), Walsall away 1-0, Rochdale away (2-0 and thought we'd blown our chances of going up), or Huddersfield when we got totally outplayed and our fans were woeful may have been 3-0. Also Sheffield Wednesday away when I think we lost 2-0 and I took a few mates to watch it....they were less than impressed. Thoroughly enjoyed the 1-0 in L1 though when Adkins got his first win and Barney scored with Davis pulling off a worldie.

How could I forget Charlton from Boxing Day? Had only arrived at the Antigallican five minutes before it was called off.

Hartlepool on a Tuesday night was decent the first season (2009/10), but rubbish the following.

Didn't get to many away games. But Luton away in 05/06, think it was 2nd or 3rd game of season. We lost and made me realise it could be a very long time before we got back to the Prem

Reading away...got so drunk prior they wouldn't let me in (even though I wasn't even that wasted).
After getting lots of tea and milkshake at Mcdonalds they let me in at half time thankfully (although had to stand in the disabled part and not with my mates).

Going to sound weird this one but I actually found last seasons away games at Bristol city, an absolute dump without seats, and Doncaster, which happened to be on my birthday, where we just didn't turn up. Freezing aswell. Still, just a blip..

Yes. 2-1 to the good at half time gave hope... but wow. Crash and burn on the 90 minutes. That ground was just pure comedy too.

Urgh yes forgot about that one. We went round to the players exit after the game to have a moan. Adam hammill swore at some guy calling all the players a disgrace. This guy then told John gorman he was a disgrace, who then walked off crying saying that it was a disgrace that his wife died a year ago, not the football. Graham hiley then reported on the saints website the following Monday that a group of fans had brought up Gorman's personal issues and were disrespectful, despite no one actually bringing it up but Gorman himself.

That Bristol Rovers FA Cup game was a massive low, as we were truly awful, didn't even look the team who was a league (or 2)? above!

being cheated out of a bounce back to the prem by derby because of the lack of away goals rule.

thankfully I have managed to avoid our most dreadful performances

At least we signed the best player on the park that day, although most of us probably didn't know who he was before hand.

We've generally been pretty awful up north, would be interested in stats from the last few seasons of our northern away record.

Sheff weds, the game that relegated us by a country mile. If you weren't there, you don't know how bad it was and never will.

Wycombe, the goalless draw, the mauling up at Hull and the 5th round defeat at brizzle r are other immemorable mentions.

With the exception of the Wycombe game which IMO was the nail in the coffin for Pards, you can't compare any of the poor away games in L1 with the championship. Yes we were often served up dirge but there was always the consolation that the club was in safe hands.

    Bristol Rovers FA Cup 1-0
Wycombe away on a Tuesday night under Pardew - freezing cold, 0-0, awful pitch, awful game (even more disappointing after the win fantastic at Norwich a few days before)
Rochdale away L1, 2-0 loss, awful, first attempt cancelled, this attempt on a Tuesday night had awful traffic due to the Utd v Chelsea Champions League game at OT, got there 2 mins before kick off. Jonno Quick MOTM says it all!!

Hartlepool seeason before last sticks in my memory, and would be up there if i had to travel backto Southampton that night, such an awful game and was 0-0. think there was about 2 shots all game.

Must be Tranmere away , can't remember when but suppose it was 10-12 years ago and we got thrashed, I went all the way up on my own and got bricks thrown at me while walking to the car after the match ...couldn't understand why they were so violent towards us, we had no history, no taking the **** or anything..they were just scallies on the rob and up for it.

Sheffield United. Can't remember the year...07 maybe? We were sh*t, got stuffed 3-0, and it took us about 7 hours to get home.

Col Utd, packed in that sh*tty old terrace like sardines. I remember some fans right behind Kelvin's goal giving him abuse, he turned round and gave some back and there was a right slanging match. Depressing to watch. Think we lost 2-0? I didn't leave but 2 of our lot went back to the pub at half time

I thought it was a good laugh, plenty of gallows humour and the baiting of Kelvin.

The defeat in the following season was infinitely worse - the game that finally relegated us and the day the reality of administration came crashing down. We were totally flat, deadmen walking, begging to be put out of our misery.

Just read the thread - some have reminded me of other honourable mentions:

Bristol Rovers 1-0 in the cup. Fecking Jermaine Wright own goal (was just a deflected Lambert shot IIRC, but JW was sh*t)
Swindon away 1-0. Biggest cheer was when we finally made a sub after 80 mins, and we'd been 1-0 down for at least 70 of them.

Every single sodding trip to Swindon, single worst place in the country with just nothing in it, loads of poor performances, hateful place that I will keep to the vow (this time) never to go back too.

Tranmere away during the last season in L1 was ok, lots of cheap drink and no one unreasonable around the place. Charlton being frozen off was a pain, especially as I felt the ref just wanted to spend boxing day in the bath.

We have certainly had our fair share since the first relegation, I'm sure there are plenty more, but there also seem to be a lot in the last 3 years when we've won the majority of our games...!!!

Unbelievable save that was. From C Morrisson IIRC. Was heading right in the bottom corner with the last kick of the game

Donny away last season for me.
Flew over for the weekend to enjoy the **** and cold weather both days , **** ground way out of town , no proper home support , ****e saints support , boring boring match , only a couple of saints shots all game and we lost 1-0.
Thankfully all my other trips over were an enjoyable success.

Ah yes. Luckily I was staying with friends near-by and went by local train, there was a food and drink festival in the station forecourt and the station pub itself is a good'un. Just as well I was relaxed to start with. IIRC Jake Thompson was playing and it became evident he wasn't going to be an answer to any of our problems, although that day it would have been unfair to pick on anyone really.
