Sheffield Wednesday Away 2007. 4 goals in 14 minutes. My brother and I left when the fifth went in. Awful day

Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, relegation season, freezing cold night. I was with a Palace supporting mate, who ribbed me constantly during the game. We lost 3-0, and Shefki Kuqi made us look inept. The only player that shone for us that night was Jack Cork (believe it or not) and I could see then he'd become a top player. (Thank God we then went and signed him years later.) My Palace mate said Lloyd James looked OK too. He didn't to me, he looked clueless.

Colchester away. Just awful. Crap ground, nowhere to drink, **** performance, took an hour to get out of the car park afterwards.

This. Without a doubt. Train delays on the way home made it worse.

Yep. I was there for that one as well. Horrible night in which we went 2-0 down within 15 minutes more-or-less ending the game as a contest right there. For the rest of the game both teams seemed to have accepted the result before Palace added a third when Lloyd James failed to control a long ball and Palace nipped in for their third. Remember it very vividly indeed.

Sorry about that pal. Just couldn't be bothered that day. I had things sorted with another club anyway and my time at Saints was over; still, i've got plenty of happy memories here including my goal against Derby in the play-offs. That dickhead Idiakez missed his pen though, never liked him even when we at Derby together.

Pride Park, 2nd leg Semi of the playoffs. Realising, along with everyone else in the row that away goals don't count.

Liberty when the Portvillet was in charge and Lloyd James spent the whole game out of position. One of the worst displays I have ever seen.

Losing at Udders whilst sat with the Udders fans. (First and only time I've been in with the oppo fans.)

Swansea, think that was the season we went down. 3-0, pathetic performance, no atmosphere in the away end and kept in that cage outside the away end.

Also seem to recall a Carling Cup 2-0 loss to a league 2 Notts County on a miserable Tuesday night.

Rochdale 2-0 defeat was terrible, journey up, journey down, the football, our support, everything.

Hartelpool second time round was w*nk i thought.
Every trip to Swindon was c*ap, even the cup win.
Thought Millwall in the cup this year was pretty awful too.

Pedant Alert!! He scored on his debut v. Northampton in the Coke Cup, 4 days earlier.

    Of the ones I've done:

0-0 With Wycombe in our first L1 season. Just dreadfull, their pitch was basically a sand pit and we never got started.
5-0 Defeat at Hull under Pearson
1-0 Defeats at Swindon BOTH times. I actually went again for a 3rd time last year in the CC. Was determined to break the jynx, we only just did it.
1-0 Defeat at Leeds under Pardew. A moment of genius from Snodgrass punctuated an otherwise soul-destroying match. Was absolutely FREEZING to boot.
2-1 Defeat at Colchester. Another freezing cold none event from Saints. This time in a soulless ground in the arse end of nowhere. The fog was funny for a short period.
2-0 Defeat at Rochdale and the traffic on the M6. Meant to get there 2 hours early for some drinking, barely made it in for KO, whereas the players didn't turn up at all. Had a good sing along to Alanis Morrisette in the traffic though, so not all bad.

I want to say the 4-4 draw up at Posh, to throw away a 2 goal lead twice in the same match against our promotion rivals, with an injury time equaliser was just horrific. However, you can't say you didn't get your money's worth in an 8 goal thriller.

The first Swindon game can't be the winner, the weather was lovely and it was barely an hour up the road. The performance maybe, but for the overall package I think we're looking a lot further North somewhere and in winter.

  14. Default

Rochdale. Not only as we lost, but for the fact that due to the M6 being closed, we took 6 hours to get there as they kicked off. No pubs and then when we tried their much recommended chippy outside,at the final whistle, it was feckin shut. Couldnt get in any services after as they were all full of plastic Mancs on their way home after a Euro game.

    A truly horrid day.

Colchester in the fog was turd as well.

Despite the relegation, had some cracking away days in 08/09 but also one of the worst ever. Getting humped 3-0 at Swansea, we barely broke sweat in our efforts to get into their half, police were right miserable tossers that day, not allowed in pubs, crap journey up, fights amongst Saints fans, crap journey back after being kept in the cage outside. Oh, and some psychopath I know accused me of sleeping with his sister. I hadn't.

Sheff Weds away when we down from the Champs - total gutless capitulation - the least we deserved was the team to at least pretend they were trying. (Honorable exceptions to KD and Chris Perry).

Colchester in the fog - just a total no-show from the fans - the single worst away games I've 'ever' been to atmosphere-wise.

Swindon away - Pardew just hanging the team out to dry second half (Look Nicola, I NEED SOME MORE PLAYERS!), that tactic worked a treat in the long run!

Wolves - 2 nil down in what seemed like the first two minutes, and having to endure another 88 minutes of their promotion party - their fans were top draw that day, and all live in Sky TV! What goes around, comes around WTFILN?

I'm truggling to find anymore - it's been a brilliant few years to follow Saints and there's been loads of decent awaydays on the pitch and off it.

I concur with those who said Doncaster away. A truely awful game, at an awful away ground and our fans were terrible.

With the exception of the Wycombe game which IMO was the nail in the coffin for Pards, you can't compare any of the poor away games in L1 with the championship. Yes we were often served up dirge but there was always the consolation that the club was in safe hands.
Totally agree on comparing the last 3 years with the disgrace inflicted on us before it, those results were just blips after we'd been taken over. Actually, 04/05 was the worst of the lot as demonstrated by Claus's recent revelations. Bristol Rovers in the Cup was right down there, several players seen to be heavily overweight on live TV and the poor attitude of staff and players alike. Sheff Wed away X2 although as many have pointed out Kelvin redeemed himself with those wonderful late saves a couple of years ago to earn us a massive 3 points. Hull away as well and Swansea and Plymouth home when Euell was booed off. No-one has mentioned the very worst though, Doncaster home. Widespread fighting I seem to recall amongst our own fans with those supporting the Askham/Lowe regime and those not arguing violently and an awful, awful display. It just reminded me that most of that squad like James and Thomson were going to end up either in L2 or non-league and I was right.

In terms of performance, Swindon away was the ultimate low. I remember with 3 minutes to go every Saints fan jesticulating to Pardew to make a sub. (Circulating hands)

I went to the Walsall away game too, that was just ridiculous - all over them and we lose to a Macken break away goal.

Went to Colchester, Swindon, Walsall and Hull. Hull was truly epicly bad.

Barnsley away, December 2007. Chucking it down, freezing cold and 1-0 down in under a minute. Game finished 2-2, only bright spark was Lallana coming on and changing the game, think BWP scored 2!

Wycombe by a mile. Chucked it down, pitch and surrounding areas were a bog, we were useless, missed kick off Sat in traffic in Wycombe for an HOUR and not much of an atmosphere. Also held back in the car park for 20 minutes despite being at the front of the queue, hugely annoying.

The early L1 -10 Swindon match was pretty bad too, booing the team and a bloke a few rows behind me getting into a fight with Jacob Mellis' family after racially abusing him.

Oh and Swansea. I only went from Newport, terrible weekend all round, not helped by a load of Saints fans I knew giving the girl I was with hassle about being welsh. Ended up coming home early to the house with the ex in it.

Quite enjoyed Colchester in the fog though?

Swindon in the first league one season seems to have most mentions - my son's first away game! Davis played exceptionally well to keep it to 1-0. Pardew shipped out most of the team that played that day asap.

Didn't go to the Bristol Rovers cup game - but it was live on the BBC, which meant loads of people at work got to see it - 'I saw your boys on the telly - and Christ they were sh*t!'

Peterborough away in the League Cup, can't remember the season but I do remember Saganowski being particularly awful along with the rest of the team.

Closely followed by Swindon away our first season in L1

Followed by Leeds away when Snodgrass scored a peach. Think that was the coldest I have ever been at a football match.

This. Colchester i hope i never have to go to that utter, utter, **** hole again. Was worse with Boothroyd having narrowed the pich and telling the ball boys not to give it to our players. Horrible ground, rubbish fans, rubbish atmosphere. Sums up an average L1 Club perfectly.

I'm another one who rates Wycombe as the worst. Cold wet miserable, pitch boggy, lumpy, having just had a rugby match played on it. Two teams who only half tried. Then stuck in the car park for over an hour afterwards. Truly horrendous.
Hull 5-0 was bad, but at least I made a weekend of that one by attending a car show 1/2 way back on the Sunday and picked up a few spares.

This was a memorably bad performance. At least it didn't matter in the league results but those were equally poor at the time (wasn't this just after the 4-1 loss to Palace)?

I'd have to say Birmingham last season not for the result but for the f*cking snow.

    That was just snow!

Leeds was snow on the ground and well, well, below freezing. Don't think I've ever been so cold at a game with the possible exception of away to Reading at Elm Park in the FAC under Souness.

That Leeds game was definitely the coldest I've ever been to. Think it was about -5 most of the day, it my uncle hadn't brought a spare hat, JustMike would have no ears now. I think it was one of the few games to actually go ahead in the FL that day. Remember meeting loads of other fans at Leicester Forest services who were on their way back home because their games had been called off.

Had to listen to the Skates beating Liverpool on the Bingo bus on 5live, early kick off. I think the only highlight of that day was leaving the stadium on the bus and a big fat Leeds fan fell flat on his arse on some ice. He looked up to see 4 coached full of Saints fans giving him the sign language.

That Swindon match, chanting for Pardew to make a substitution, there seemed no hope that night. Another painful night was Preston away losing 4 nil. I had a meeting in Machester that dat, nipped up to Preston, but had to be in Sheerness the next morning. Miserable long drive. Museum was good though.

Forgot about Tranmere - Saints were rubbish, the penalty was a nonsense, the place was a bit crap, but as we spent the weekend in Manchester and I proposed I can't really include it - didn't go the season after though !

Swansea. Ordered my tickets over the phone, and arranged to collect them on the day from the stadium (booked them at quite short notice). Arrived at the ground about 40 minutes before kick-off, but was locked away from Saints fans by the cage around the away end. I was told I could only get in if I showed them my ticket - but obviously couldn't because I was supposed to be picking it up from the turnstiles. After about 20 minutes of squabbling with a steward/policeman they finally decided to let me in- although it still took them about 15 more minutes to actually fnid my ticket once I got to the turnstile (I'm pretty certain it was a problem on Swansea's part, not Saints ticket office). Despite being in fairly good numbers, Saints fans were the quietest I've ever seen them and on the pitch it ws one of the worst performances I've ever witnessed - Swansea fans were "Ole-ing" every pass from about the 10th minute onwards. Was a shame, because I've been to quite a few Swansea games at the Liberty and it's normally a really good atmosphere there.

Was also at the Sheffield Wednesday game too. That was pretty bad, but at least the fans were able to laugh about it in the stands. Swansea, everyone was simply miserable throughout.

Considering I've only been to about 10 away games in my lifetime, I've picked some shockers.

Before the wilderness years, but West Brom away when we were relegated from Prem. Prutton, I think, missed an open goal towards the end and we just looked broken. That was the night that I thought we were probably down. And it was unbelievably cold too...

Fans were great though - "Harry and Jim, Red & White" all through the game. How times change...

We didn't even lose that though, and yeah, Prutton missed from inside the 6 yard box from a low cross when it was easier to score. 0-0.

I didn't go, but what about Stockport under Pardew. Probably the worst team Saints have EVER played in a league fixture and they got an injury time penalty to draw 1-1. Think that left us about 12 points from safety and without a win in half a dosen league games. When I saw that result I honnestly thought we could end up in League 2.

I was pretty much nonplussed by it at the time, turned out to be 2 points that would have kept us up... but 7 years later we look a lot better off, so...

I seem to recall that that was how it was generally reported - "a vital point away from home for Saints". It was just the moment I thought we were down, especially after being convinced we would survive when we beat Liverpool 2 nothing a few weeks before
