    Default Barnard to Swindon?

A Swindon supporting mate of mine seems to think Barnard will complete a move to Swindon this coming week. Has anyone heard anything of the sort? To be honest he won't cut it in the top flight so maybe such a move will be right for him.

His lack of involvement yesterday suggest he is surplus to requirements.

quite like him shame he missed most of last year and maybe needs a fresh start due to court case

Agree, he has contributed to our rise, and I was sorry he missed much - most of - last season due to injury as I think he could have been an asset in the Championship. Having not had chance to prove himself at that level, its unlikely we'll see him as an obvious choice in the Prem.

Swindon ? Personally I think he could play at a higher level in the Championship.

Barnard, Dickson and Forte were all missing yesterday but played against Sholing so I think it pretty obvious all three have been told that they do not figure in future plans so they can leave with our blessing. I doubt we would ask a fee for any of them.

He was at the games yesterday in training kit/tracksuit along with Tadanari Lee and a few others. Was quite happy and upbeat. Pleased to see Arron Martin there as well - albeit in 'civvies'.

Really? All 3 would easily command a fee, particularly Barnard who excelled in L1. We paid £1m for SRL and he had only played L1 at the highest at the time.

No way we should let Barnard go for nothing! He's a decent player and would have scored a few in the Championship had he had the chance.

Barnard played around a half dozen games in the Premier League for Tottenham. Sadly his chances were ruined by injury there as at Saints. So he has played at the highest level.

I don't think he ever played in the PL

I missed the outcome of his court case as I was overseas for a month !
How did he get on ? I presume that he was cleared ?

I think he did it wasn't half a dozen games though it was more like 3 sub apperances for spuds before he got injuried.

I like Barney ..I really do. I wish he hadn't been injuried last season IMO he could have done a job for us in the Championship. Sadly I think the truth is the club has moved on and due to injuries Barney hasn't kept up a new club is probably the best move for him now.

Lee seems incredibly injury prone. He injured himself after a match where he spent the game on the bench. How bady can you be jinxed like that?

Tommy Fourpast was on the bench a few times for Spuds, not sure it is really that good a benchmark, they were times when Spuds were a complete crock of ****e. It is no good thinking we should get a fee for Lee, bottom line is that he is probably on high wages, higher than most Championship/L1 clubs could afford, only way to move him on and allow him to play football is to let him go for free. demand a fee and clubs like Swindon are not in the market, that's why Lee Holmes ended up going to PNE, when he really wanted to join Swindon. Think Swindon would be a good place for Barnard, might get into some tussles with our local fascist though.

I am a fan of Barnard too. I think you are probably right in your assessment. He needs match time to regain his best form. He would have done the job for us last season if he hadn't had his injuries and possibly the court case hanging over him all season. Leaving is probably the best move for him. Maybe if he went out on loan for a year like Martin, and has a good season we could reassess his situation if he finds his form.

  22. Default Barnard to Swindon?

I'd be surprised if he ended up at Swindon, as I feel he's more than capable of doing a job in the Championship.

It's a shame he spent much of last season injured, as the partnership he formed with Lambert in the latter part of our League One promotion campaign was at times formidable.

Not to mention that he scored some crucial goals for us over the past few years.

I'm certain he'll be plying his trade elsewhere in the not too distant future, but wherever he ends up, I wish him all the best.

Barnard is no more than a League 1 player in my opinion. He puts in the effort there is no doubting that but he couldn't trap a bag of cement and his anticipation to get on the end of a through-ball was more like an after-thought.

Good luck to him though as he did give his all for us.

I still find comments like this truly bizarre. When did he ever get the chance to prove he could do it in the Championship? He didn't, therefore it's harsh to say he's no better than L1. I would expect him to score goals in the Championship, I'm just confused as to why people say he's not good enough even though he's never had a chance of playing at that level.

I thought Holmes was released on a free transfer?

He wasn't much cop in league 1. That's not being bizzatre.

He's an excellent league 1 striker who would score goals in the championship.

Your opinion. Just as bizzare to say he 'would' score in the championship when he has never proved himself. I'm glad you're not the coach/manager.

    Ummm...yes it is...

    League One record

    2007/08 27 games - 12 goals
    2008/09 35 games - 11 goals
    2009/10 45 games - 24 goals
    2010/11 36 games - 14 goals

So for those four League One seasons he played 143 games and scored 61 goals. And that "isn't much cop" to you?

That comment at the end kind of confirms that you've not got a secure opinion/point, otherwise you wouldn't have to resort to comments like that.

At the end of the day he is a goal scorer and goal scorers will score wherever they get the service. If players like Clive Plat cane come up from L1 and score goals in the Championship, then I'm damn sure that Barnard could. I think Palace would be a good fit for him if I'm honest, could try including him in any sort of deal!

Appreciate the goals he scored for us, and that massive, massive winner against MK Don's will live long in my memory.

He is unlikely to stay, he is a long way down the pecking order behind Lambert, Tadanari Lee, Sharp, Rodriguez, Guly Do Prado and Saints can only name a squad of 25 over 21 year old players.

Surprised to see some negative slants about him on here.

I'd say he was a victim of circumstance, what with his injury, the court case & the subsequent evolution of the squad in his absence.

He was one of the best League 1 strikers, picked up for a bargain price who gave us some real added quality up top. (Much like Sharp did to us in the Championship).

If he is to leave, I'll certainly remember him fondly.

  34. Default

Yes, definitely a top shelf striker in L1 - his record proves that and would not be out of place in a lower half Championship line up.

He's an OK L1 striker, although he needed to prove himself on the field rather than in a bar to be a Championship player and thats the long and short of it. He didn't do that...but of course SRL did and then some. You reap what you sow. Good luck in your post Saints career Lee.

He scored some important goals for us, i'll wish him very well.

.and you're quite right. A good rule of thumb is.....if a player is in the right league for his talent-

0.3 goals per game is about average..anything approaching 0.5 is really quite good. Very few players achieve better than 0.6 goals/per game.

Well I would pay to watch the ensuing discussion when di Canio substitutes him when he's on a hat-trick.

He really stepped up to the plate in league 1 and scored big goals in big games

Good luck to him if true but we do need to cut down the squad a little to make room for new and better players.

Wherever he goes I wish him luck. On Saturday he had no hesitation when I asked if I could have a photo of him with my three grandsons. Lee shook their hands and posed with a big grin. He asked where we were from and I told him.He remarked "It's so good to see such dedication from you all" I shook his hand and thanked him. A really nice lad who went out of his way to give my Grandsons something to remember.
    PS The photo is excellent.

He would be a wonderful signing for a L1 club and if he was available, I would expect a number of championship clubs to be interested. He could do a great job for someone like Derby, Barnsley, Millwall etc. If he moves on (which I think he should as I feel we have outgrown him as a club now), I would wish him all the best and hope he would go on to have a decent career. He was a big part in us getting out of L1 and definitely worth his fee.
