    Default Players to leave

Forte, Dickson and Barnard have been told they will not feature this season and are up for a move according to Solent Sport interview

    Just those three?

Hardly a surprise, though if that's from the club then it's the confirmation we've been expecting.

That was the three named by Adkins. He said he wanted to give them an early opportunity to find another club. He played them in the development squad to keep them fit and ready for a move. Solent say he also rubbished reports of Chaplow to Crystal Palace.

The fact that none of them are shown in the first team on the (horrid) new OS was enough for me to know this.

Reasonable offers for Punch and Chappers would be favourably looked at as well I reckon

So no news there then. That was blindingly obvious. Can't these intrrviewrs find out anything of interest these days?

It was on the Saints Player interview.

He said he has been fair to them and told them early they would need to move on and he has no complaints with their effort etc and expects them to get moves as they are good players.

On incoming transfers he said there will definitely be additions, still wants CB (or two) and wide player, but when asked about Lens and Dann said right position(s), not necessarily right names.

Said we need to have competition and CB certainly an area where we need that but won't panic buy.

Asked about the young keeper Davies and hinted strongly that we need and will get a keeper for the Dev squad.

So Kelvin is first choice still, then.

Interesting that he still clearly sees a role for Puncheon.

Yes, KD is the first choice keeper this season it would seem.

On Puncheon, it looks like he will make the final 25 but you never know, especially if we get in another wide man as Adkins said he wants to. Plus point of Puncheon is he is versatile, can play either side and in the middle...

Puncheon will stay I think, he seems to have stepped his game up in pre season and could be a good player for us this year.

I'd imagine Reeves will go out on loan at some point as well.

Matt Jarvis please; proper statement of intent. Doubt we can afford him and one or two decent centre backs though.

    I certainly hope so.

    the (horrid) new OS
When a new website is launched everyone hates it because they're not used to navigating it and find it difficult, then, a couple of months later they think it's great. That's the theory. Personally, I didn't like the old OS and I don't like the new one either.

I think Punch will go but only after we have got in the players we require. Chappers on the other hand will stay bcause he is one of a very few 'utility' players we have, who can come in and do a decent job in a number of positions (wouldn't expect him to be a regular starter though).

I liked Niges comments that who we bring in and who is on the bench needs to be as good as or better than the ones playing so they can impact the game. Hopefully that should put a nail in the coffin for all the signing "back up" merchants we have on here.

    Puncheon will stay
Been one of, of not the best player in pre season

Puncheon can and has played in all sorts of positions; left wing, right wing, centre midfield and behind the front striker. Chappers in comparison plays right mid or centre mid. And Punch has featured a lot more in pre-season than Chaplow so I'd expect him to stay unless we sign a couple of wingers, which I don't think we will.

They presumably told them this about a month ago, given the timeline of Dickson's tweets, and their appearances in the Dev Squad at Sholing weeks back.

Dickson on twitter was very obviously resigned to not getting to play, his choices being staying and not playing, or taking a pay cut to play elsewhere permanently.

I think Chaplow probably adds more in the changing room than on the pitch. He's clearly popular with a good head on his shoulders. He won't feature too much but will still be influential in other ways.

Any reason why some people don't think Chaplow will feature too much this season?

Personally, I think he's a tidy, aggressive player who will step up nicely to the Prem. Saints have a history of bringing in quality lower division players and turning them into sold topflight footballers...back in the mid 80s pretty much half our team at any one time were raided from the lower divisions. Does noone remember the decent jobs done by the likes Hobson, Statham, Forrest, Cockerill, Townsend, Moore, Marsden, Horne...

FWIW, I think Chaplow will more than hold his own in 2012/13.

He's hardly played as it is in pre-season; he seems to be behind Guly and Puncheon at RM. And Adkins has hinted that he wants to bring in another winger, as we have Lallana and JRod on the left it would only make sense for the winger to play on the right, thus pushing Chaplow down to 4th choice. At CM he is behind Cork, Schneiderlin, David, JWP and Hammond.

The better question would perhaps be, do you think Chaplow is going to establish himself in front of all those players, and how?

Dickson seems to be more concerned in his efforts to get selected for the Malaysian national team.

When can we get rid of Forecast then?

I think Chaplow will have a role to play from the bench more often than not, bringing some energy to the middle of the park perhaps at key times in games. It's been a key thing for some time now (even though so many fans seem to miss these things) that Adkins has highlighted that sometimes players have a specific role, and that our tactics and the starting XI (and subs) are often picked to do specific jobs. Chappers is unlikely to be a first choice in many games next year IMO, but he'll have an important role to play at times.

Far out I read that as Fonte and thought - gees we really need to bring in more defenders fast -

*takes a deep breath and re-reads*

So chances of us bringing in another LB or will Shaw step up to challenge Fox ?

Forte and Barnard - legends for THAT game vs MK Dons alone.

I am not sure that it is a question of establishing himself - more a question of does he offer something that other players in the squad don't offer? And, therefore, is there a role he can fulfill in some situations that others cannot do better? My instinct is that he will be part of the squad.

I agree with other views on Chaplow. He's useful as a sub from the utility angle and he also buzzes about the pitch effectively which is good for the last 30 minutes sometimes.

How many times do you see the "lesser" teams overcome the big guns by getting right in their faces? Chaplow will be useful for exactly that. His energy will be important in closing down the playmakers.

Yeah that game will never be forgotten!

They were the right players at the right time for this club. I'll wish them all the best and hope they find good new clubs. Feel sorry for how things have turned out for Barnard. He could of had a good season in the championship and grown with the team, if it had not of been for his injury and possibly the court case. I am pretty sure the court case dragging on for so long really didn't help.

I'll be sad to see Barney go ...always worked hard scoed some inportant goals always looked like he enjoyed being a saint.

Jonno quick had those two goals against MK.....but in truth was an odd signing that never really achieved anything

Dickson was never good enough even in league 1.

In the run in, on our league 1 promotion year, I thought he began to show the promise he had done for Brentford the season before when he made team of the year. Not sure why Adkins didn't give him more of a chance at the start of last season. I guess Adkins had already decided he wasn't good enough.

Hate to be pedantic but i'm pretty sure it was Ian Harte that was LB in team of the year. May be wrong though.

No, you are correct. Dickson was L1 left back of the year the season before we signed him. Harte was left back of the year the year we were promoted from L1.

No Ian Harte was LB of the season 2009-2010 and our own Dan Harding was LB of the season the year we were promoted. Dickson has never been in the team of the season as far as I know.

No, you can't be recalled from a season long-loan, only shorter term ones (which is why Joey Barton has gone to Fleetwood on a half-season loan, so they can recall him in October when Fleetwood have played 12 matches much quicker than QPR would have).

I think the confusion might be about that Dickson was Brentford's Player of the Year when we bought him.

As for the other comments here I wouldn't be surprised to see some pruning in the midfield department. Schneiderlin, Hammond, Davies, Cork, Chaplow, Lallana, Ward-Prowse, Chambers, Reeves... That looks like a lot of players to fill what is essentially three places. In NA's formation there is room for one defensive (Schneiderlin, Hammond) and two others. We seem to have an awful lot of others. If we discard Lalland (out of the question to sell), and Davies (we've just bought him), and Ward-Prowse and Chambers (they've just been promoted to the first team squad), there might be question marks around Cork, Chaplow and Reeves.

SDR, in spite of our willing him on to do well, seems to completely have lost confidence, and he can't get a start to save his life. Doesn't look promising for his future career with us.

Guly is another story. I watched him against Wolves and thought: "Well, his critics won't have much to complain about this time." I thought it a very credible performance. And then the entire choir of the usual suspects starts singing the same old whinging song. I would dearly love to find out what it is that is going on psychologically with these people who are unable to judge a Guly performance with any resemblance of objectivity. It's tiresome.

So just back from Team GB and goodbye to a team where he is a regular starter? Me thinks not.

Cork is probably one of the best players we have on the ball, he is definitely not a question mark.

I would say the youngsters will probably go away on loan for short periods during the season, in which case it makes sense to have all those options around.
