Lack of "real"information re transfers from club!

I am very disappointed that we have not had any form of communication from the club regarding the Ramirez/Philips transfer fiasco!

I do not see what benefit there has been in letting this carry on without any comment. What is wrong with saying we are still trying to complete a deal and explaining why there is a delay?

I would just like some progress report either from NA or being leaked to the press. It's embarrassing to watch NA being interviewed lately, he obviously wants to answer questions but isnt allowed and I for one don't understand why not!

This doesn't mean I want a running commentary but frankly 60 plus pages on one transfer suggests that fans are desperate for some communication from the club. Frankly I have spent literally hours reading through these threads and can say this situation is driving me mad.

The only thing you should here from the club regarding any signing is 'we HAVE signed ..............' any thing else is unprofessional. The next thing you here from the club about it will be on the official site to confirm the signing or the press conference on Friday with NA saying it fell through.

Sorry why does making a comment regarding progress (or the collapse of negotiations) make any difference? It seems to me that the Ramirez and Philips deals are being played out in public by all except SFC.

We're not in the football league where maybe this approach works and players will keep quiet. I'm not asking for intimate details but some sort of communication when things become complex and delayed.

Let's be honest why couldn't NC explained exactly why we didn't sign Buttner, that we have made a bid for Philips, and an update re Ramirez when things became public knowledge?

This is how the club operates now (and in fairness has done since the take over) you just have to get used to it. I find the best thing to do is just assume it's not happening unless the player appears on the O/S holding a saints shirt.

Whilst I agree with the sentiments in yr. thread..(which is also being extensively discussed on another thread btw)....we have to be patient.

There is nothing to say that the club MUST inform its fans about every interview, bid and prospective target.
Football (nowadays) is big business. and big money changes hands .(although we are never entirely sure which hands it goes through)..No Managing Director / Chairman in ANY business is going to reveal
ongoing discussions with the media ... .or its customers, and so it is with football. Some of the " big clubs " seemingly summon up millions at the drop of an agents hat, and pick up on the " intelligence "
gained by other clubs - as is seen by the Buttner /MU deal. Although, IMHO - he may regret that as he's most likely to spend much of the first season or so in MU reserves.

As to the other two ongoing " deals ". Matt Phillips is (seemingly) unhappy enough to put in a transfer request, but it seems Holloway (a most unusual character in many ways) has a personal feud with Saints , which he carries out through the media. I think he realises that Phillips will go sometime, but Holloway is just making life difficult as the deadline is so close.

the Ramirez saga is difficult to understand as their are so many " Italian involvments " peculiar to Cortese and the Bologna chairman (who is "apparantly" a witness in a conspiracy/bribery court case, at the same time).

The step up from £4 million to a £7 million transfer record (Rodriguez) took the breath of many fans ...the prospect of almost doubling that requires caution and Nicola Cortese's banking background suggests that he doesn't make rash decisions, and with an ongoing example of an overspending club for all to see - at the other end of the motorway - he is exercising caution, particularly as we are also committed to buying other players (namely more defenders)..its frustrating YES, but not every day one spends £10-15 million.

Also the " interference" of the media, and people on Twitter - and even on this site...on deals with conjecture, gossip and plain lies doesn't help matters either.

One way or another .it will all be over by next weekend ..so sit tight and be... a little more patient.

I like the way the club deal with all this - it's no ones business until the deal is done. Commenting on business dealings is unprofessional and the clubs that do use the press look amateur.

As for the 60 pages, half of that is the usual tittle tattle between the usual suspects, the rest mostly over reaction to a potential signing.

I rather like the "behind closed doors" policy myself. It strikes me that singing from the rafters that you're trying to sign a particular player makes the club look a bit clueless if the deal falls through, (which given the financial complexity of todays game happens all too often.)

I think that I am very patient regarding transfer news and rarely express a view.

As for BUttner I think it is more likely that we will regret not signing him than the player or Man U! I tend to think Fergie and co know what they are doing. Why can't we say we've bid for PHilips in response to Holloways interviews? As for Ramirez just a comment would be enough - 60 pages is ridiculous don't you think?

Apart from NA's interviews which are hardly forthcoming there is an absence of real information. I know we've had the shiny cd's with our ST's but no fans forum on Solent or fan communication. I really think that communication is important If we struggle this approach won't work in my view.

The only real difference is the Internet and sites like twitter. In the past u never used to hear about deals until they were done, now days u can read all about stories and rumours on the net. I really think there is something to be considered here - just because we are getting used to having worldwide information within seconds of it happeneing (I remember when Beattie crashed his Lambo (or was it a Ferrari?) at Millbrook and pictures where on the web in seconds!) why do we expect to know every detail of a transfer! The club have been very clear in their policy over the last three years, they do not comment on transfer activity. I think sticking to that policy is fine and we need to judge them by the results of this window, not the rumours during it.

I prefer it the way they do it. Nothing until the signing is complete. Not sure why people have to be so impatient, if you want to deal in rumours and speculation there are plenty of places to do that. I'd rather the club devoted their energies to actually producing results on the field than keeping the needy informed (which is not to say they couldn't do both, but they don't need to and arguably it's better that they don't).

Things take time with a number of parties to satisfy (selling club, agent, player, players wife, visas......etc,etc). Compare our business to date(i.e Jay Rod, Davis, Clyne) with other clubs in the league. It is difficult to conclude that the club lacks ambition or that they have sat on their hands for the last few months. Also why would you want to put your competitors on notice of your dealings before they are done?

I think this is another example of where a fanontheboard would be useful. For complete democratic openness with the fans who of course always know best
we could operate a twitter style site. At the end of each season we could provide a full list of our transfer targets coupled with the players who are surplus to requirements.Add to that a breakdown of our finances so other clubs know how much we can spend.There could also be a function where fans could post any rumours
and the fanontheboard (or maybe the club historian) could respond to within seconds.
With current technology it would be easy to provide an interactive map which could show where our scouts are, where transfer negotiations are happening, maybe even track private plane flights and so forth.
If nothing else it would reduce the amount of wet beds in the area.

As others have said I think it's wise to keep a lid on transfers if only to keep others from outside muddying the waters, this Ramirez wants out of where he is he met the club, a deal of some sort seems to have been agreed between gentlemen, but then the main object of the transaction gobshoites on twitter that it's in the bag:Ciao Italia. Was this at the behest of the agent in cahoots with Bologna to get a better offer, probably.
Buttner seemed a similar affair club doing it right, but others around him leaking stuff pushing harder for monies, in reality coming to Southampton was probably never a possibility, we just got used as a stepping stone/ shop window to get the "dream" deal.
Phillips deal as I said elsewhere the illegal approach business could be we might have had a very loose conversation with the agent and said if your boy ever wants a move give us a call, to which the Agent tells the player, who in turn shouts round the dressing room Saints are in for me.
Away from Saints Demba Ba hit a rich vein of form for Newcastle last season, at it's height his agent pipes up out of the blue to the football world " Ba has a £10m buy out clause in his contract"! Newcastle said nothing which made player and more so Agent look like very greedy individuals.
The least we say the better, there is nothing to say until the deal is closed.

Probably the best example of Saints keeping their mouths shut was Lee Barnard, rifling them in for fun at Southend and a hot property everyone was looking at. The window was closing, Leeds by all accounts had secured his services, then bang we have signed him much to all us fans surprise. In fact it was a surprise to Leeds as they were so certain of having got their man that their midweek match Programme had a big spread welcoming him to the club!!

If we made public every player we had an eye on this board alone would go into meltdown, they are not stupid inside SMS, they probably know full well that least said is also saving a lemming like leap from the Itchen Bridge by a small section of fans!

Arguably the fact that the club have made no comment makes it even more ludicrous that we end up with 60-plus page threads on potential signings. Talk about feeding off scraps. Why would they comment when no deal has been signed or negotiations are ongoing? It could compromise the whole setup.

If a portion of the fanbase become disillusioned by deals not coming off (and let's face it - we rarely get to know how likely any given target was to signing), it's almost entirely their own fault for whipping themselves into a frenzy over hearsay.

Anyway, perhaps if people stopped hounding players, club officials, agents and journos for every morsel of info these things would go more smoothly.

QUESTION : Should the club reveal its transfer targets and the prices they have bid?

a) Absolutely, I want regular weekly statements from the Chairman, or manager on all transfer activity ... both in and out.

b) Maybe not everything, but at least a short list of those we are interested in.

c) A few denials, or confirmations would be nice. Even if we don't actually name targeted players.

d) Absolutely not. Keep quiet about everything until the deal is done, and issue a photo of him with his shirt number on the OS.

I think this is a good cross-section of the various viewpoints expressed so far.
