Default My chat with Paul Gilmour... and briefly with adkins

Spent a few hours down the stadium tonight and got chatting to sky reporter paul. Seemed a really nice bloke, had some good info, and was correct in the sharp and hammond out and no more signings as of half 9 I think he told me? cant remember.

For anyone interested, gaston will be at st marys tomorrow to do the photoshoot, interview etc.

Asked him what he thought of NC and he said the times he has delt with him, hes been a really nice bloke to deal with and speak to.

    on to adkins....

just as i was getting into my car, I saw him leave the stadium, I got out to have a chat and ask him what he thought of today and if he was disapointed about the final few hours.

His reply was " allways stuff in the pipeline, your just have to wait and see" he then done that cheeky smile and laughed and said his mind is now onto sunday.

No it is not sometimes deals are announced after the window closes. We can also still sign free agents and make loan deals with view to permanent once the loan window opens.

not if we bring in an out of contract player. As we have quite a few players 21 and under could we name less than a 25 man squad and bring in an out of contract player afterwards?

Not as a Premier League club we can't, that is only available to Football League clubs.

We won't sign another keeper. Would be a decent signing though if his wages wern't too stupid.

Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure that if you are a "South Coast Hampshire Club" you can sign whoever you want, whenever you want, from whoever you want and not give a feck about any rules laid down by any governing bodies. Sure this has happened ......... just can't remember the club involved???????

We won't name 25 anyway, we don't have enough keepers over 21 so will only name 23 players plus Gazzaniga and Cropper as U21s.

A few weeks ago I remember posting to the '25 man squad' thread. At that time we had a squad of exactly 25 over-21-year olds plus 7 under 21. We have now got the following squad with 22 players over 21 years old:

    Goalkeepers
    Kelvin Davis
    Paolo Gazzanigga (U21)
    Cody Cropper (U21)

    Right Backs
    Nathaniel Clyne
    Frazer Richardson
    Danny Butterfield
    Jack Stephens (U21)

    Centre Backs
    Maya Yoshida (Non Home-Grown)
    Jos Hooiveld (Non Home-Grown)
    Jose Fonte (Non Home-grown)
    Dan Seaborne

    Left Backs
    Daniel Fox
    Luke Shaw (U21)

    Central Midfield
    Steven Davis
    Jack Cork
    Morgan Schneiderlin
    James Ward-Prowse (U21)
    Richard Chaplow
    Corby Moore (U21)

    Attacking Midfield/Wingers
    Adam Lallana
    Gaston Ramirez (Non Home-Grown)
    Guly do Prado (Non Home-Grown)
    Steve de Ridder (Non Home-Grown)
    Jason Puncheon
    Ben Reeves (U21)
    Callum Chambers (U21)

    Strikers
    Rickie Lambert
    Tadanari Lee (Non Home-Grown)
    Jay Rodriguez
    Emmanuel Mayuka (Non Home-Grown)
    Sam Hoskins (U21)

    So, some thoughts and questions:

    * As we have only got 22 players aged over 21 (I’ve assumed that this should include the players who are aged 21 – i.e. Ramirez and Clyne – is that correct?) we have space for three more players. So, the question is – will we bring in any players who are without a contract or will we just keep these spaces vacant for the January transfer window?
    * Will any of the 22 players go out on loan to the Football League?

I would personally hope that we might be able to bring someone in as cover at left back. Anyone know of any good left backs that have not yet got a club?
Another centre back would also be good - shame we sent Martin out on loan instead of Seabourne, but hopefully he will return next year and stake a place in the squad.
I would also expect that SDR might go out on loan and potentially a couple of the under 21 players (e.g. Sam Hoskins, Callum Chambers, Ben Reeves).

Nope, the only defender I can think of so far is Danny Gabbidon.

Of course it isn't compulsory to name all 25 players, that's just the max. number, but in view of the fact that we have the former " Academy quartet " on the bench ..and names like Reeves and Hoskins in the frame now ...most of them might well have got a place - if they had been over 21's.

Arsenal only named 17 last season, plus a swathe of U21s. They were limited by the non home-grown rule. Our only limitation will be the one Flyer mentioned on here a few weeks ago about 3 keepers - as 2 are U21 anyway.

For consistency with the Premier League the squad should be named with the "25" first then the U21s.

Judging by the list above we'll name 22 players plus the U21s. The cut off for the U21 distinction is not being 21 or over on Jan 1 in the year the season commences. So anyone U21 on Jan 1st 2012, ie anyone born on or after Jan 1st 1991, is an U21.

i dont think gaston qualifys as under 21 as i belive the have to be home grown also, i.e spend x amount of time being trained in the country.

    am i right in that

The home grown rule only applies to the squad of 25 (at least 8 home-grown).

You can have as many u-21s as you like, but they must be u21 on 1st January of the year the season starts (ie: 1 Jan 2012 for this season).
Ramirez was 21 on 2nd December 2011 (accordind to Wiki) so too old to qualify.

If that is correct Clyne qualifies as u21 as well, as he was born in April 91. I previously had him down as an over 21 player. So that probably means only 21 players need to be named, and that assumes that we will name players such as Steve, Chaplow and Butterfield one or more of whom may still be considered surplus. So plenty of scope for free agent additions. BTW the squad can also be changed at the next transfer window (January).

The Premier League published the list of all clubs squads within a day of the close of the January window, so I would expect this seasons list to be out early next week.
The 2nd Feb List is here:-
    http://www.premierleague.com/content...ruary-2012.pdf

The pdf is made up of 2 parts : the "25 man squad" and then a list of "U21 Players (Contract & Scholars)" where every player under 21 is named.

If you are interested it is good way to find out players middle names i.e. AOC - Alex Mark David or Surman Andrew Ronald Edward or Best Leon Julian Brendan. Equally the entry for SG at Liverpool say "Gerrard MBE"

p.s. I tried changing the url to "Sept-2012" and "September-2012" but I get 404 so this season's is not available yet.
