Thread: Jason Puncheon

Thought he was excellent in his interview with the national media today, seems to have really grown up.

'Jason, do you have a point to proove to anyone?' 'Yes. too myself'.

Also said he hasn't fulfilled his talent, he was just a young lad from London, doing what young people from London do.

Wait until he's dropped for the next few matches...

Huh - I've yet to see much evidence of him having any great talent. I think the Championship is about his level to be honest. Nice to hear him saying something sensible though.

Thought he was excellent against Man Utd the other week. Let's see how well he does against Villa.

Big feather in Nige's cap if he's got him thinking that way. Let's see if it lasts.

I thought it was a good interview. He started grinning when talking about how good Gaston was.

Seems genuinely happy to be at Saints still and only had praise for Adkins and Cortese.

Says having kids and a family to lead has made him grow up and says he has in no way fulfilled the potential he has.

Still just a big time Charlie imo. I cannot get out of my head the image of him running into Loftus Road and then stealing the limelight when we got promoted.

On top of that he was useless against Arsenal.

Puncheon has been consistently one of the better performers this season. Still one or two aspects of his game that need working on (e.g defensive duties) but I do not see those as being so serious as others. He is a real threat going forward and his understanding with Clyne is what does it for me.

He was pretty awful against Arsenal. And very slow.

You didn't watch the united game then? He was superb.

He was decent vs City too. Plus no worse than any other midfielder at Arsenal.

Punch IMO was by far our worst player on Saturday.

I was there, and would have said Davis, Fonte and Fox were all worse. Lallana and S Davis easily on a par at best.

I was too, and agree. But Puncheon was still awful, which just gives you a hint about our limp performance. Rickie was also fat and slow, I'm afraid. Oh for 11 Ward-Prowses.

Wrong, he's been one of our better players this season.

The thing with Puncheon is that he isn't reliable. He will have 1 good game and 5 bad. Even Guly is more reliable than him, I miss Guly.

Just watched the interview. Very impressed with his attitude. Came across as genuinely regretful of things that have happened in the past.

He did ok against City, didn't play against Wigan, scored a worldy against Stevenage, excellent v Utd, not good v Arsenal ... but who was??

Good season so far for me.

Agreed, with the exception of the shot late on he contributed nothing and basically hung Clyne out to dry. He was far too late in reacting to everything going on around him. The previous week against Man U he was pretty impressive, one good run in particular stood out.

He's a bit of an enigma, but without the stellar upside to make him worth the gamble a lot of the time...

The Sky interviewer hit the nail on the head in questioning him about end product.

Funny, when Lallana hangs Fox out to dry it's Fox's fault.

I think both our wide players last weekend were very poor. Along with Lambert. Puncheon just didn't really track back either which atleast Adam does try and get stuck in.

I've said it before and I say it again: The problem is the lack of end product, whether tackle, cross, pass or shot. Sometimes he still looks good, sometimes bad, but I fail to see that this is the issue. If the crosses rain into the box and the passes go to a saints player I'll forgive him even if he looks bad.

Whoops, nearly forgot. He has improved by not keeping on turning around to do the player he's just done a second time around. It was enough of that before this season.

When Fox is in the wrong half of the pitch at the time, it is indeed.

Good on the ball and going forward, like Lallana, needs to put a full defensive shift in. But we do need to push higher up the field as a team and compress the time and space of the oppo.

Needs to work on his defensive side IMO,needs to pick up the oppo wing back when defending as he has left Clyne on his own a few times this seaon, same goes for AL and Fox.

he isn't quick, never has been never will. Realise that and you'll see a different player. Maybe not the best, but usually with a decent touch that keeps the ball reasonably well. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the next `Chamberlain'. Last time he sulked.

Tsk chez. How long have you been posting on here? You should know by now that the only good players in some fans eyes are ones tht are quick and run around a lot, regardless of what they do with the ball. The love in with De Ridder and Antonio evidence of this.

Puncheon is a very good footballer and likely to be given the chance to improve with the team... hopefully

as we win today and begin the rise up the league.

    COYS 4-1 win today...

Is he ready to play in goal yet or are we going for eleven outfield players?

Very very good today conducted himself well, really starting to see what he is capable of after stripping back all the other crap surrounding him.

IMO he was very poor in the first half but came alive for a brilliant 25 min spell in the second half.

Hes clearly a very talented player, id just like to see him shine when things aren't going well for the team and if he can do that he'll be a very important player for us this season.

poor first half. Very stuttering display and his terrible pass led to their goal. Clyne didn't help him, often eating his space, and he didn't see much ball, but when he did he didn't push down the line enough. Excellent second half though. Perhaps Richardson helped him with different movement and positions. Very pleased he got his goal. He has been barracked on here for a long time and having recommended we sign him several years ago I thought my eye for a player had left me. He has the touch to do it at this level. Not sure 4-4-2 quite suits him, but at home he certainly offers us something. All is rosey. Perhaps he'll even buy himself another pair of black trousers with the goal bonus.

    And you're right.

I too have given this player some stick over the years on the grounds of both his technical ability (or lack of) and his questionable attitude.

However I though he did well both today and against MUFC. His final delivery and shooting are likely to remain as wayward as ever I fear, but there is something about the status of being a Premier League player that seems to make him raise his game significantly. I (and the fans around me) were most surprised to see him substituted today considering how increasingly effective he was becoming as the game went on - although the young player who replaced him (Mayuka) looks as keen as mustard and a proper prospect.

Keep this under your hat, but I think Jason Puncheon could be a real asset for us this season.
