I wont be going as the fireworks don't really appeal to me.
TV coverage is the way forward.

Last years were after a home game as I recall. I watched them quite drunk from West quay. Quite good I think.
The fireworks..
I would much rather stay at home and watch the QE2 sail away, through watching the TV coverage.
WHICH I did.
I have worked with QE2 three times during my time at Southampton Docks. I was proud to work with the cruise ship because it had so much history, and it looked beautiful standing next to it. Any one who had the oppitunity to work at the cruise terminal, while the ship was there would agree with me.
I have a feeling of sadness because it is such an extraordinary ship. All the modern ships are quite ugly. But this ship stands out to be the best, despite its size.
It is a shame that it has to be sold and turned in to a floating hotel but every thing has it's price.

Was this any good then ?
Saw the fireworks from Calshot. They must have been impressive because they still looked good from that distance. The noise must have been quite loud too, as the bomb blasts were clearly audible at the Spit.
I'm rather glad I made the effort. It's not everyday this sort of thing happens, and one of our party, who's very much a stay-in-and-watch-it-on-TV type, was really impressed by the whole occasion. TV might give you an excellent view, but it still doesn't give the sense of really being there.
EDIT: On the subject of the passing of the ship; I think we all have a bit of affection for it, not just because it is Southampton's ship, but because the replacements don't look like ships anymore. They look more like floating hotels than the QE2 ever will. When you look at the QE2, it still has that proper hull line and superstructure. It looks in proportion, like a good looking ship should. The QM2, Victoria, and the new P&O and other ships have very little attractiveness in their lines at all. The QE2 simply looks like a great ship.
