Hampshire CCC Season 2014

Weston Saint

Recommended Posts

I will start with rule changes applying to next season

The changes in summary:

‘Finning’

In relation to a bowler who breaks the wicket as they deliver the ball, ECB will adopt the Law change recently made by MCC stating that this is now a ‘No Ball’ and this will apply in all domestic cricket.

Super Over

The introduction of a Super Over in all tied NatWest T20 matches – including for the first time in group stages of the competition.

Over Rates

In the NatWest T20 competition, the time allowed for the incoming batsman to be ready at the wicket will be reduced from 90 seconds to 60 seconds.

Points system: LV=County Championship

An extra two points will be available for a draw in order to provide greater reward for hard-fought draws and matches where bad weather has affected the outcome. This will mean five points in total for a draw, 16 for a win. Bonus points remain unchanged.

Coloured Crease Markings

Alternative colours to white may be used as crease markings from next season – subject to successful trials. This change is designed to make crease markings easier to see for both spectators and TV viewers.

Royal London One-Day Cup

ODI playing conditions will be replicated in the Royal London One-Day Cup wherever possible and two new balls will be used.

Heavy Roller

A heavy roller, should it be made available, may only be used once by each per team per match for a maximum of seven minutes in LV= County Championship fixtures. However the decision on whether to make a heavy roller available or not will rest with the home team and this will also apply in the one-day competitions. A light roller must always be available.

TV Umpire and foot-fault No balls: ICC regulations will apply in domestic cricket. At the request of the on-field Umpire at the bowler’s end, the TV Umpire should check for a No Ball – for dismissals only.

TV Umpire and waist-high full tosses: Waist high full tosses will be reviewed by the Third Umpire at the request of the on-field Umpire at the bowler’s end for dismissals only. Any benefit of doubt should be with the batsman.

With thanks to Terry Crump, Hampshire Committee Chairman who summarised the above

So we're off with a 2 day friendly against Middlesex who are now 131-1 at lunch. Hope we get at least some batting practice before Sunday's CC game with Worcs.

Assume Middlesex would want their side in the field for a day as well, so would expect them to declare overnight.

Some things never change...

Bad weather always affects our batting, lads seems to think that they have to go after runs in a gung-ho manner to try to win what promesses to be a shortened game and our poor bowling being what it is... never works we always lose wickets cheaply.

Can't really take too much information from a game where nearly 2 days were lost to poor weather, never much hope of a result anyway.

Yeah I suppose so, I’m not reading too much into the batting, but I was hoping to see a bit more from the bowlers. Anyone know what the wicket’s doing?

Same bowlers as last season and the season before, they weren't great then can't see why they should suddenly be this season.

Bowling-wise, I was hoping that Matt Coles would carry on in the same vein he ended last season. Anyway, early days - he might take a hatfull this afternoon.

The wicket is green and has a bit of pace and movement. Providing the bowlers bowl a good line they should take wickets. Not my opinion but that of the head groundsman Nigel. Coles looked our best bowler yesterday. Balcombe will struggle to get into the side on his present performance but we should have our overseas player joining up now.

On batting Adams looked good, Smith steady and Ervine was sublime from the moment he came to the wicket. Balcombe supported Ervine well.

Personally I was happy with our batting yesterday but very disappointed by our bowling.

And while we lament our own woes, there is always someone worse off than you. Surrey, despite having one of the strongest (and highest-paid) squads on the county circuit, are on the verge of being battered by Glamorgan in what has basically been a 3-day game. Bowled out for 81 in their second innings, with Glamorgan currently 71/0 chasing 153.

If we are serious about promotion then surely we want a good start to the season. I think this is a disappointing opening game - very poor batting in general and poor bowling. We need to improve - and soon.

Rain ruled out any chance of a result though. I see Carberry is out cheaply again...at least he made 6 this time.

Yeah, it would have taken either side being particularly **** for the other to win it given the lack of time available. Only 189 overs bowled in the entire match, you'd probably need two innings of less than 150 to get a result there.

Good of Surrey to oblige accordingly at the Oval

Surrey astonish me - they have a squad that ought to be at the top of D1 and some young batters and quicks with real potential. Yet they seem to fold under the slightest pressure. As for Hants, we dominated Leics last year and rain stopped us winning so same start. I'm surprised Kent let Matt Coles go, he had a few problems with England A going out on the last with Ben Stokes but he's up there towards 90mph for pace and gets late movement. Can bat as well. Abbott should make a big difference when he arrives and we need him to stay fit. Vince needs to kick on and bag 1000-1500 runs if we are going to get promoted and he is going to have a sniff of England recognition. Against the quickest bowlers, he seems to be on the move too much, hopefully that's been addressed over the winter. Wheater needs to keep up his good start, was disappointing last year and lost his place.

292/5 at close. Why have we picked only 3 specialist bowlers again? Briggs should surely be playing instead of Gatting. If we're going to bat Wheater at 8, we might as well play Bates.

It's a confusing one, isn't it? I genuinely thought Gatting was only signed to provide cover should Carbs/Vince get called up for England during the summer. With Ervine and Wheater both playing, I really don't see any reason to play him instead of a fourth bowler. Wood and Coles would be a pretty strong bowling 8 and 9.

I think Wood is injured to be fair but like you I expected Gatting would barely play. Strange signing really as his record at Sussex was poor and Terry scored a couple of 50s at the end of last season. Dawson, Vince and Smith should not be bowling 25 overs between them on day 1 (although Vince has tidy enough figures)!

We have a lead :o

Some truly woeful bowling figures for Gloucestershire, basically Gidman and Payne have restricted our scoring quite well, but we've been able to see them off and then score heavily against the others.

MD Taylor 17 - 5 - 74 - 2 - 4.35

JK Fuller 12 - 1 - 79 - 0 - 6.58

TMJ Smith 12 - 1 - 71 - 0 - 5.91

Another point of interest, if Adam Wheater gets 55 or more in this innings, his first-class average will go above 40, from 94 innings. He's batting at number 8

Looks like we're really making hard work of getting their last wicket, I hope we're not going to regret not finishing them off once again.

And as if by magic...

215 to win. Still big favourites, but could do with a decent start to avoid putting too much pressure on the tail. Adam Wheater has a broken finger so won't bat unless he has to.

not even we could fook this up , could we?

If anyone could **** it up, it's us.

72 runs needed, 8 wickets (realistically 7 wickets due to Wheater's injury) in hand, around 45 overs to bat, on a wicket that's tended to only offer anything with the new ball.
