Poch aiming for the league title with spurs

Ambition can never be a good thing. If Harry can do a job there, then there is no reason why Poch can't - he's a top manager. If he can get his team playing as well as ours was last year, then they will surely rip teams apart - they're only a couple of players away from having a very good side.

As said before.

They havn't really strengthened much as yet, whilst the teams above them have strengthened significantly. Utd who were behind have got in a couple of players, and arguably upgraded on their manager also. Though, you could possibly say this of Spurs also.

Funny hearing Poch saying he wants to win things, wasn't too interested in that down here. It's alright criticising him for targeting Top 4, or criticising that mindset. But, surely that has to be their aim before a League challenge. I think the former will be a big enough challenge (not a slight on Poch - I just think there are 4/possibly 5 teams better than spurs), let alone the latter.

There is no chance of this happening. I am not a betting man but am willing to bet a large chunk of money on Tottenham not winning the Premiership in the next 5 years.

Well, they're not in the Scottish League and nor do they play rugby, so I'd say that was pretty certain.

In his first half season with us, he managed to get us one position higher than Adkins had us when he arrived and Adkins was already headed upwards too at that time. Last season he managed to get us up 6 places higher, which was a creditable achievement and but for a couple of key injuries, we might actually have finished a place or two higher.

But the problem that Pochettino faces, is two-fold. Firstly he has inherited a squad of individuals, which he has to get to play as a team which is used to playing his style of football. Therein lies the second problem; those players will have to adapt to double training sessions in order to implement his high-pressing tactics. Even when he has managed to instill that work ethic into the team, every other manager in the division knows how Pochettino's teams play and will have a tactical strategy to counteract it.

Pochettino's problem is that he arrogantly refused to change his tactics to counter any opposition team's style of play and as the season goes on, canny managers will learn the lessons from analysing those matches where Spurs are beaten to find them out. Not only that, but because there were several teams in the World Cup playing the high-pressing game, many of the Premier League clubs have taken note of its effectiveness and will adapt it for their teams. It is no longer as effective a weapon as it was.

It's laudable for him to harbour the ambition to become champions of the Premiership, but then he doesn't put any time scale on it beyond "one day". What he apparently doesn't realise, is that the Spurs fans and Levy will already have put a time scale on it and if he doesn't get them into the top four this season, that will probably be the end of his tenure with this "big" club. The trouble with achieving his ambition with Spurs, is that there are at least four clubs bigger than them, all well-funded and with decent managers.

If he did pull it off and make Spurs champions, then he could walk into any management job he wanted. But as it is far more likely that he will be sacked within a year, his next appointment will be with a lower placed club either here or back in Spain.

do well at spurs, he is on to bigger things, win trophies or not.

if he gets spurs CL football in the next 3 years and does well in that he will no doubt be on the radar of top sides in Europe

maybe even national manager in a few years.

more chance of that (and actually winning stuff) at Spurs than at saints with best 4-5 players leaving

Ah, but we are told that these players are only leaving because Pochettino and Cortese left, as they loved them.

Pochettino is almost certainly using Spurs as a stepping-stone to greater things, but he is going to fall on his arse with them and take two steps backwards in his career as a result. Yes, he probably had more chance of achieving CL football with Spurs than with us, but his career would have benefited more by staying another year with us and taking us to 6th than it will going to Spurs and failing to get above 4th once again.

So if he and the players had stayed what do you think us likely to win next season? He had no interested in the cups so that only leaves the Premiership.

More chance of Ralph Kreuger doing a pre match streak at SMS than Poch being given 3 years by Levy to get spurs CL football. He will be out on his ear if he doesn't achieve a top 4 finish next season.

I agree, he has more chance of being sacked in the next 5 seasons (actually probably the next season) than he has of winning the Premiership in 5 seasons and given the realtive strength of the top clubs against Spuds the chances of CL are pretty slim too. On the bright side they could have plenty of Europa Cup football to look forward to. ;)

I think he will do annoyingly well at first. But then the stroppy Spurs fans will get on his back after a loss to Arsenal and a few other dodgy results and Levy will get rid

Spurs fans will expect a good go at the FA Cup and will not like it if he bails out. Expect plenty of fireworks when weakened teams are announced and Jesus takes control of the cup games!

I still don't believe he did anything to really warrant the plaudits there was no,Mourinho style 1st half subs,no park the bus/counter attack formations for certain games,it was the same week in week out, granted it was beautiful to watch at times, but sometimes you could see the game needed a change as what we were doing was no working or we had been found out

The team pretty much picked itself and he inherited a decent squad with great togetherness.

Time will tell if he can push Spurs on,but given how the top boys are strengthening and the Van Gaal/No europe for Man U Spurs will have to go to that next level if they can crash the top 4.

I cant see him doing it with no apparent plan B in action.

Says he wants to win the title with Spurs yet seems strangely reluctant to predict that he'll improve on their finishing position last season. All he'll say is that he aims to get them playing in the style he wants - well, he might do that and see them finish in the bottom half of the table. If so it'll be curtains for him. So put your money where your mouth is Poch and tell us what position you are aiming for this season, not some ridiculous fantasy wish of being champions sometime in the far off future.

it might be argued that IF MP had stayed, we would n't have seen the exodus of several leading players....now if he himself doesn't survive at Spuds, there may be lots of aggro from various sources, and

questions about what might have been.......but perhaps not from those who have already moved elsewhere ......and are currently on £100K /week.

From the comments it looks like their fans like ambition....weird bunch...

Aim high and demonstrate ambition and you'll finish higher than you ordinarily would've. No ambition and all your players and manager leave and you finish below your target. Simple really.

Hope he fails, but I think he'll better last years placing.

Somebody said a while back, getting the Spurs job is like winning the lottery. Not sure if he has a 5 year deal like AVB, but if he's sacked he'll get plenty of compo.

I wouldn't mind if Spurs won, would be something different, just like when City won. My laid back frame of mind might be due to lunchtime drinking!

Also, Spurs have a bigger squad to cope with injuries and cup runs

Finally, and I've said this before, the supposed highlight of my son's visit to UK (from Oz) was the dross-fest of the Villa away game. He'd already binned Lallana, Lovren, Lambert et al on FIFA, and he felt vindicated. Whilst disappointed at the complete lack of penetration by the team, he remains a Saints fan, for which I applaud him!

He must have a little chuckle to himself when he sees Billy Sharp back in the fold!

Not sure why anyone is suprised, he always said there was no limit on what we could achieve. Its words. He said eventually they aim to win the PL, whats wrong with that? He is not saying they will, just thats the aim eventually. A couple of years ago they had more of a chance than Liverpool.

Fairly sure that Billy was involved in pre season every year he has been contracted with us to some extent normally until a loan is sorted. But dont let that get in your way.

First point: doubt that very much.

Second point: substitute winning to champions league, then it's what was being said about us while still with Cortese.

He didn't say 'aiming to win the League', he actually said 'aiming to win the League Cup' - lazy journalism rears it's ugly head once more. This will complement the tradition of success that Spurs have enjoyed over the past quarter of a century, with a League Cup win every decade...
