Clyne & Chambers Dilemna

Both quality players who are up with the best in our squad - unfortunately competing for the same slot.

I thought we may try to find a place in the team for both, with Chambers being moved inside to CB at least for a friendly. But that hasnt happened as yet. To be honest he would probably only work there in a back 3 or 5. He could also cover in midfield if needed but its our strongest area so he wouldnt be a first pick in that area.

Clyne, IMO, can cover at LB but isnt two footed enough to be nearly as good as he is at right back where he is excellent. I would hope we bring in a LB to compete with Targett.

Its a tough situation. Chambers will attract big interest next summer and Clyne has two years left on his contract. If either feels they arent playing enough then they would be very frustrated as are easily good enough to play for a Spurs, Everton quality side.

Question is threefold:

1. Can we keep both happy and wanting to stay?

2. Could we fit both into the lineup on a regular basis and how?

3. If its a straight fight between them at right back then who wins, for you?

I think having two really good players competing for the same spot is the least of our problems!

I would let them battle it out! I like them both but I think ultimately Chambers will win & go on play for England & Man Utd, I think he's brilliant!

I'd be in favour of trying CC at CB too, I mentioned it on another thread.

For me it's a dead heat between them in terms of ability. Both excellent players so it would depend on the opposition. At home to Burnley, Clyne every time. A trip to the Bernabeu against Bale and Ronaldo would probably require the more defensive Calum. In short, there is no right answer to this one.

It would be nice to find a LB and a left sided CB who can also cover LB, to replace Lovren. Then we have good versatility and depth in most positions.

Maybe we can accommodate both if we played

3 centre backs Chambers, Fonte, Yoshida

2 wing backs. Clyne and Targett

1 Holding midfield Wanyama

4 in the Diamond Morgan, Gaston, Tadic, Pelle

Still think we are stronger playing 4-2-3-1 like last year, which as I recall is the 'Southampton Way'. This means one of them has too miss out or Clyne plays left back.

Can't shoehorn Clyne in at LB to accommodate Chambers I think - it's one or the other for the RB spot as far as i'm concerned. I think Clyne is a better player, but Chambers is more consistent. I think what distinguishes the two of them in terms of them as footballers is their style of attacking play.

Clyne brings the ball forward and hovers around the edge of the box looking to receive the ball to lay it off or put in a deep cross, whereas Chambers prefers to get to the byline and put the ball in. I think a lot will depend on that particular aspect of their play this season, because looking at the goals Pelle scored in Holland getting on the end of crosses is a big thing for him. I don't think too much else about them separates them apart from the size difference, although personally I think Clyne is a better defender - especially in one-on-one situations.

I think Clyne tends to do more in the final third myself, and gets to the by line more.

Also better defensively one vs one but also more prone to an error at the back post than Chambers, who is also a better passer and better in the air.

Chambers could end up a very tidy centre back eventually. Kind of good player that almost could play anywhere.

If one of them doesnt get much game time I would imagine a host of teams will come in with offers in January.

Its only in the first team that chambers has played right back. He played midfield in the youth sides.

He looks a very intelligent footballer. I can see him playing in a 3 at the back, though at 19 there is no rush to play him every minute of every game.

No dilemma at all, Clyne is miles better than Chambers.

I think Clyne is better going forward and more athletic, but is positionally weak and more prone to errors, and Chambers is better at actually defending. Depends what you want from your full back.

I also can't see how having 2 decent players in the same position is any kind of a problem, if we'd had that standard of competition for every position we'd be in Europe this season.

Apart from Shaw, I think Chambers is the best youngster the Club has brought through for ages (though Reed's time is coming) - however, Clyne is a high quality specialist right back who has to get the nod, and I hope RK resists the temptation to play him at LB too often. Where that leaves CC I'm not too sure but I hope he gets plenty of minutes on the pitch as well.
