Getting a new one around Easter

I have MacBook now it will be 5 years old in in march so a good time to get a new one

I browse internet, listen to music and play football manager

This is my 2nd MacBook and have not had a windows machine in about 8 years. Last time I had one properly it ground to a halt very quickly and had all sorts of anti virus running all the time.

What to suggest. I want a MacBook, but looking at a grand straight away. But then a windows machine seems to mess up far quicker

I agree Apple are very good at what they do, but to be honest unless I was doing something like video, audio or picture editing on the move I think they are way over priced. If your budget stretches to one and you are obviously happy with them I would advise to stick with Apple.

However if you look at places like Pc-specialist or Cyberpower, Pound for Pound you will get a much better value machine with the specs you want. I have used both for building custom gaming desktops, the great thing about them is they offer a very customisable system that will do all you need, they start from a couple of hundred pounds all the way to several thousand and will not charge you a Dell, Alienware price.

Pc specialist I know also has a fairly decent community forum also, so may be a good place to pop some of those fears about windows to bed, also they sell systems with windows 7 or 8 depending on your preference.

A 5yr old MacBook will do all that you want it to do, in a breeze. Why the need to change it?

I've been on PC's for years, but have always fancied a Mac. Was in PC World yesterday and they were promoting their Mac stock on a load on interest free bundles. Didn't buy one, but indicated an interest at some point. The missus informs me that Juvenile Unit #2 fancied a Mac as well. She's already got a decent-ish laptop, which could be given to someone else, so I asked whether she'd prefer a Mac to her current machine.

Oh no, she'd like a Mac but she still needs a PC.

Pretty much describes every PC owner that has ever fancied getting a Mac. Should give you an idea on priority.

I've had a MacBook Air for a few years and I take it with me when travelling. I use VMware a Fusion for running XP which works ok. What I really hate about a Windows is all the sodding updates.

If you want to squeeze another 2-3 years extra out of an older laptop, I would recommend getting an Solid State Disk, it will make it amazingly quick at booting, opening files etc. irrespective of Operating system.

(I have supported Apple and Windows PC's for over 20 years and have always been left disappointed, I use Ubuntu 14.04 LTS if anyone is interested. )

Stick to football, mush. This 900 quid lappy makes the price equivalent Macbook look like a pocket calculator.

I am leaning towards a Mac, I think

Mac all the way, still have an 8 year old MacBook that is still running as well as the day I bought it

Can't ever see me going back.

I was always sceptical, but I'm totally sold. That said, I've started doing video editing, run a lot of games and even a bit of design now. So a Mac was always likely to be a better option.

And then some! "Thinking about buying a new laptop around Easter" ffs. I find the news that Batman plans his IT procurement 8 months in advance to be startling + deeply worrying. I prob won't be able to sleep now, I haven't given a moments thought to what purchases I'm making next easter.

A Mac will last longer than the support Apple will give it when it inevitably becomes obsolete. I have an 11 year old Powerbook G4 which is still perfectly fine for browsing the web.

Anything else - forget it.

My advice would be to wait for whatever is going to replace the Macbook (it can't be long - it's pretty long in the tooth) and buy that.

Until then, stick with what you've got.

I think Apple stuff will be less good in future. I've noticed that even my dear beloved iPhones & iPad has become less reliable since Jobs died.

I (a self-declared computer disaster zone) was convinced for all the right reasons to go for a Mac after my entire computer life experience being on Microsoft...bought a Macbook Air which is a brilliant piece of engineering. Windows were also discontinuing support for XP on my 5 year old Lenovo so it needed to be upgraded.

So - am I happy? Well...about 4 months in I went out and bought a Toshiba with Windows 7 installed - I kept the Mac, it's great for portability, ok for emails and everyday stuff but I could not get my head around the differences in Pages, Numbers etc...get Windows for Mac I was advised (my brother is a professor of computer science but is also very nerdy-practical and hands-on) but it was a dogs breakfast..for me...I'm lucky I could run to the two but I'd take a look at whether, fine bit of kit that it is, it's actually right for you. I guess your experience is the reverse of mine but I find the football streams etc are far more microsoft-friendly!
