He should never have been signed as he wasn't anywhere near able to cope with a first choice player in a premier league side, in his prime though he was a magnificent player, who would have been world class if he wasn't made of glass. I used to know his brother and he said he had a lot of affection for Saints, Always felt he did his best for us but physically no longer up to it. The others though, Davenport, Bernard truly woeful. Thinking back after reading about him going to the States to get his knees fixed by the specialist who sorted out many American Football players after the end of the season, that his own father was prepared to risk his son being crippled by asking him to play for him with us. Trouble was he never got fit enough for our league, and moved on to a league where he did not need to be fully fit. Would certainly rate him much higher than Osvaldo in this debate! I met him a few years ago and he said it was the worst moment of his career by a mile, he was absolutely gutted by it. AGREED, but we have to admit he was a big step-up from Jos Hooiveld.. who (thankfully) DAJFU in the Championship season, but was clearly out of his depth in the Prem. I'm not actually sure if he wanted to stay in the first place, but once he took a look at his contract / offer.... it must have been a no-brainer. One of the worst-ever deals I can recall. Let's not forget who was manager at the time. Pochettino knew him (and his problems) from before, but must have thought he could rehabilitate him... After a couple of years he was signed by Chelsea and we got another good full back from them in return - Joe Kirkup Orient needed a striker (George O'Brien) and Dave Webb looked good as a budding 19 year old full back, but he was an ambitious lad and saw we were going nowhere after a couple of seasons. krissyboy31 Posted 1 November, 2014 Share Posted 1 November, 2014 Quite a subjective subject this, a lot of the players that come into the category were at the end of their careers, not the players they were at their peak (we probably wouldn't have afforded them then anyway) and suffering from persistant injuries. If you're including Delgard for not taking the club's advise on getting his knee fixed, you could include Ekelund for the same with his back and he patently wanted to be here and preformed above expectations. Some were makeweights in transfers going the other way, like Ripley, Speedie and Dixon which is generally not a good ideavbut then, so was Beattie and he was an unqualified success.
