Hampshire CCC - 2015 Season

Halo Stickman

Perhaps a little premature to be starting this thread with the season still a few months away, but it was great to see Carbs helping Perth Scorchers win the Big Bash and Vince making some decent scores for England Lions recently. I also thought Yasser Arafat and, to a lesser extent, Jackson Bird bowled pretty well during the Big Bash.

I'm hopeful that Hampshire will hold their own in Div 1 this year, whilst continuing to impress in the shorter format competitions. Would be interested to read other posters' expectations for the forthcoming season.

Great - the HCCC tread means it's nearly spring

I think we'll struggle - although Worcs should yo-yo again and take one of the relegation spots. I'm not sure if the bowling is deep enough. And Vince may get an England call up

Agree re Vince. Looking at England's schedule this year, it is even more mad than normal, with a tour or series in every month from now until September, followed by a trip to SA from Dec to Feb. Quite why I am going to Dublin for an ODI in May is beyond me

Its recipriocal. Our youngsters have been sent over there for years. Usually to Perth, where they are coached by Paul Terry and play in the local grade teams.

I'd much rather our young quicks got a chance than short-term, mediocre signings like Gareth Berg. How many old military medium keeper-up-to-the-stumps lags who can bat a bit do Hampshire need. Looks increasingly like Hants and Worcs have accepted 4 day relegation and will focus on one day cricket.

Matt Coles leaves Hampshire by mutual consent.

When we took him on loan with a view to signing him the message that came down from Kent was that he would need to change his attitude and listen to advice. He wss a little overweight and I never saw him trim down.

Very disappointing last season. He hit one great 50 in T20 game in Essex but after that he was repeatedly caught cheaply on the boundary. He could not get his head around the fact Essex was a small ground and it was a one off

Seemed to me to he lacked the intelligence to be a good player and the fact it was mutual suggests Hampshire felt the same. No indication yet where he will go but in my opinion he has wasted his talent and I cannot see him changing now.

Both Bird and Adams only here up to June - then I think they're looking to get Kyle Abbott back.

Rest of the bowling is Tomlinson, Wood, Briggs plus Ervine and a perhaps-fit Berg. Not sure first division batsmen will be having sleepless nights facing that line-up

I read somewhere over the w/e that there are supposed to be six counties vying for Kevin Pietersen's signature this summer. Anyone know if we're one of them?

Great batsman, but wouldn't want him here again, personally – although perhaps others see things differently?

Not if he's just using us to get back in the England fold

Don't think that line up is anywhere near good enough for the First Division or arguably even first class cricket! Hampshire should have pushed the boat out to for a younger and quicker bowler like Nathan Buck who went to Lancs, instead we end up with old military medium cast-offs like Adams and Berg is just an embarrassing signing. White is desperately trying to talk him up pre-season but with his injury record I'd be surprised if we see him much and he wasn't that good to begin with, let alone at 34.

I can't believe Hants will start in a higher division in a weaker state than last season - poor planning. Are there any promising quicks or spin bowlers that can be fast tracked from the Second XI or Academy?

So we're off for the season, friendly against Surrey who are currently 40-1 and of course there is the inevitable rain delay.

Bit of a crappy early spring so far weatherwise.

NB Neil Mackenzie currently 150 odd not out for the Lions in S.Africa, pity he can't find the time to play for us any more, even if he is getting on a bit.

Its Fidel Edwards.

Bit more pace and quality into the bowling lineup although no idea how good he is nowadays.

For the second half of the season.

His recent record doesn't appear to be particularly impressive.

In other news I see that Neil McKenzie has announced his retirement from 1st Class cricket.

He played for the Combined Campuses and Colleges against Nottinghamshire a couple of weeks ago and tore through their entire (more or less first-choice) lineup with 8/40, so he can't be in that bad form.

I stand corrected, Steve!

Strange that that didn't show up on the cricinfo site under his recent performances, unless I missed it.

I did notice that he also played against us in his last match so I guess we must have been impressed enough to sign him

Edit: Actually, I guess that his CCC performance wasn't List A or Ist Class so wouldn't have been listed on cricinfo?

Loved watching McKenzie. Terrific batsman for us and was a real influence in the success of the one day and T20 teams.

Agree. McKenzie is an extremely talented batsman with a very professional attitude – he always gave one hundred percent effort as far as I could see.

One of our best-ever overseas signings, imo.

So is it not county teams any more ? Or is Birmingham one of those new fangled city-counties nowadays like Greater London and Greater Manchester.

Warwickshire renamed their T20 team to Birmingham Bears last season. If it goes the way of IPL or Big Bash, the whole competition will be made up of city franchises.

It's fair to say it received mixed reactions in Warwickshire, given the amount of support that comes from Coventry, Warwick, West Bromwich, Wolverhampton, etc. The club justified it on the basis that the city council had been very supportive over the years with ground redevelopment plans, funding, etc.

In other news, we're playing Loughborough MCCU today, piled on 185/1 up to lunch with Carberry unbeaten on 99.

Looking at that bowling line up we are going to struggle to take 20 wickets to win matches, a host of dibby dobby seamers - basically everything that is wrong with County Cricket. I mean how hard can it be to find a few lads in the schools who could bowl with pace?

There's loads of them. You've just got to look in Australian and South African schools.

Mmm, County Cricket + Viagra – I suppose that could work.

In other news, as a native Caulkhead, I was pleased to read in last week's Pink that the club are considering playing one of their 50 over fixtures on the Island this season, although I can't imagine that mainland-based supporters will be too happy about travel costs etc.

I'm glad you typed that carefully, Windows! (paying particular attention to the word 'buck') :)

Anyway, one of my earliest childhood memories is of my dad taking me to watch Hampshire's last competitive fixture on the Island, which was against Worcestershire. Strangely, the only name that stuck with me from that match was that of Tom Graveney (I suppose, because he played for England and then went on to become a commentator)

Has it really been that long ? Thought we might have played some Sunday League games there when they were sprayed about a bit, some were played on some pretty awful wickets around the country.

Browsing Amazon a couple of days ago I came across a new biography of Barry Richards, written by his 1970s Hants teammate Andy Murtagh. It came this morning and I've just about finished it - very intresting and definitely recommended for anyone who grew up watching Richards, Greenidge, Jesty etc in the 1970s

Then the lack of bowling depth kicked in.

Yeah our bowling this game ia a worry. I was wondering apart from Ervine has any bowler in the history of the game taken over 250 first class wickets at a bowling average of over 40?...I would love to know. Great player...not a first change bowler.
