I used to hitch from Liverpool to Soton when I was a student to save cash (occasionally having been sent train fare by my folks) so I have picked up a few hitchers in the past who look like they are today's student generation. They've all been fine but I must admit I do look at them a bit carefully before pulling over! I'm sure everyone is the same.

Probably the weirdest one was a very short hitch from middle of manchester to the Trafford Centre. I got a bit uneasy when he asked me whether there were lots of cars parked at the Trafford Centre. :smt087

Possibly the same as a taxi driver,just without the financial transaction

First time we were in a minibus, 10 of us I think, so it didn't seem to much of a risk. The second time I was heading down to Southampton, from Oxford, with my gf and we'd gone to fill up first. There were two girls at the filling station and one asked my missus if we were heading up North, and could she get a lift. My gf said, "No, down South, sorry, else you could." and the other said, "Great, I'm going South. Mind if I grab a ride?" to which there wasn't much my better half could say.

I've picked a few people up. The alst was some crazy english weirdo in france. She was mental, so we got rid of her. By killing her.

I have hitch-hiked in france, also, from Ruoms to Nimes. Only about 45 miles as the crow flies but it wasn't as easy as it sounds, particularly as I don't really speak French..

I once picked a bloke up purely as I was really tired and needed sleep. I was hoping the conversation might keep me awake. As it was he didnt talk then fell asleep.

I live on an island connected to the mainland by under-sea tunnel (disappointingly not transparent), which you can't walk or cycle through. So if you haven't got a car (or boat) you're stranded.

I've picked up quite a few people and taken them through, including desperate looking teenagers who have missed their school bus. Mostly I don't though as the back seat is taken up by kid seats and the front seat is nearly always covered in junk/bags.

Have hitched a couple of times myself, but not alone and not far.

I picked up a few over the years but none recently.

I've also hitchhiked around Europe (1985) which was a great experience.

Last time I hitched was to get to Soton for the fizzy pop cup game against Stockport.

I used to hitch hike regularly (with my then b/f) from Southampton to London when I was a student. On two consecutive weekends, we got a lift from the same mad Italian in a Fiat. What are the odds on that (the same guy - not an Italian being mad or driving a Fiat).

On another occasion, we went to Great Yarmouth by train but couldn't afford the fare back so we hitched. A taxi stopped and we said 'uh oh we can't afford a taxi fare'. It turned out he was returning TO OUR PART OF LONDON from a fare and just wanted company for the journey!

Once my friend and I hitch-hike raced a couple of other girls down to Bournemouth (when we were in the 6th form). We got picked up by an oldish Polish man. When we asked him to drop us, he said 'you can't get out'. !!!!! However, it turned out he'd got child locks on the door and we had misunderstood him.

I am not casting aspertions on Polish men BTW.
