Flying back with Brussels Airlines, just rang them and they don't know anything about it. Nice to see they're on the ball.

Although I've just seen this on a website announcing the strikes -

Note: the fact that a number of workers are on strike does not mean that you are necessarily grounded. Call the reservation office where you bought the tickets to obtain detailed information. Often only workers from a specific labor union within a company will go on strike, and thus you might not be affected at all. Crazy Italians, huh?

I've just e-mailed them. Meant to be flying from Linate to Brussels at 12 on Brussels Airlines before getting a connection.

Edit: Response received.

Thank you for your e-mail.

At the moment we don't have any cancelled flight related to the General Strike.

The "Unione Sindacale Di Base" has caused a general strike for 24 hours on the 21st. It's a communist, anti-EU union, which claims to have 250,000 members in Italy, though have only 13,000 Facebook likes. It's a "general" union. Transport workers are generally affiliated with their own, much bigger, specialist transportation workers unions (most commonly CGIL, the Italian equivalent of Unite).

The strike is against the constitutional change proposed in the referendum, Renzi and the EU. Transport workers in Italy will strike for higher pay and less hours (and regularly do), but joining this general strike seems unlikely to me, especially when the transport unions haven't called a strike, and they can simply vote against the change in the referendum if they don't want it.

More to the point, will the team/players be affected and delayed again (as they were in Israel for different reason)? If they are flying back straight after the game probably OK, but if they are planning to fly back on Friday could be delayed and affect prep for the City game on Sunday. Not good.

Hopefully they'll fly back right away. I found it strange with the last game that we didn't fly straight to Israel after West Ham and have a few days localised training...I know you have recovery programmes etc. but still.

I'm on the BA flight from Linate at 7:30am so hopefully won't be affected. Not the worst city to be stranded a bit longer though I guess!?

Except for being stranded at airport on way back is not really the same as enjoying the city.

Full information here (In Italian) http://scioperi.mit.gov.it/mit2/public/scioperi

I messaged an Italian friend of mine who said the following.......

That link gives you all the detail for category of transport and dates/times. Friday looks like fun.

See the thing is it depends what syndicate the different companies are associated with.

If you look at the second line though that USB for what I can see should be the mother of all syndcates which means that in those times reported on the second line aerei (planes) treni (trains) trasporto pubblico (public transport) will stop working. And you're flying from Italy so all the companies providing services at the airport are involved

I asked if things are likely to change and if the strike could be cancelled by Friday.....

doesn't normally happen when it's such a big organization when all syndicates together?

Too strong a group and they've organized marches and staff all over the main cities

I think your friend is confusing USB (Unione Sindacale di Base, https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unione_Sindacale_di_Base) with CUB (Confederazione Unitaria di Base, https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confederazione_Unitaria_di_Base)...

I will double check but if you search ilsole24ore.com, corriere.it or repubblica.it (the three biggest broadsheets) there is almost no information apart from a few short articles reporting that USB had called for a general strike. They are calling a general strike, not a localised industry specific strike, if it was likely to happen, I would expect to see some information about it in one of the papers.

Is there any reason why trentitalia is showing that the trains are still running on the day of the strike

https://www.lefrecce.it/B2CWeb/search.do?parameter=searchOutputViewer&cFID=gDHVZbjrOvug

There are some trains which are regarded as essential services and will run whatever - there are also some bits of info out there that the strike is restricted to particular areas of Italy, and also it's possible they put the full service irrespective of the strike announcement in case it gets cancelled.

British airways don't know anything about this strike , just spoke to them now . Italian rail are still taking bookings for trains on the strike day but haven't yet replied to my email . Information does seem rather thin for a general strike . They're either used to it and not bothered, they're useless at comms or it's something of nothing .

Also received an email from the European train line we used to buy tickets . It looks like regional trains only , so good news for anyone travelling to Turin, Gerona, Verona etc to get their flights

Hi Xxxxxxxx

We haven't received any new from the Italian rail operator so at this stage, we would assume that none of our customers will be affected. We will of course notify you if we have cause to believe that your journey will be disrupted.

If it makes you feel better, strikes in Italy are common but rarely very widespread. Their influence is typically limited to regional trains, with a vast majority of high-speed trains likely to run as expected.

I'll email the rail operator on your behalf and let you know what they say. In the meantime, you can keep an eye out for updates at http://www.italotreno.it/en/italo-realtime.

From Southern Rail's Website

Planned strike action on Southern train services from Tuesday 18 to Thursday 20 October could impact your journey to or from Gatwick. Please check before you travel and allow plenty of additional time for your journey.

Thameslink and Gatwick Express services are scheduled to operate as normal.

However, the strike will have an impact on Southern services, with reduced and modified services and many routes not operating.

Thameslink, Southern and Gatwick Express will be accepting each other’s tickets during the strike.

To find out more about how your journey could be affected and alternatives available to passengers and staff, please visit Southern's website.

Basically they haven't got a clue.

not a scooby. My experience is that airlines leave it as late as humanly possible before cancelling flights, so most likely you will be travelling over before they tell you your return has been cancelled.

FAO Saints fans due to fly home from Milan on Friday 21st, information here (in Italian) on flights in respect of the transport strike in Italy.

All flights between the hours of 07.00 - 10.00 and 18.00 - 21.00 are protected and should all depart as normal (although I imagine the ones between 18.00 - 21.00 will be subject to delays, morning flights may be OK).

If you're flying in between those hours be prepared for delays/cancellations as the strike will include Italian Air Traffic Control.
