The January 2017 Transfer Window Thread

My take on that would be, we are after someone and if we get him great, if not, we will say we are happy with what we have.

My take on it too and the right thing for the manager to say, he shouldn't be going to the media saying we definitely need a CB as that totally undermines Stephens and Gardos who if the transfer we are working on doesn't come off need to be full of confidence and believe they have the managers backing.

We're linked with Phil Jagielka. Little bit of a generic link.

Really can't see that happening massively outside our transfer strategy in recent years

That's about the starting point for any young English premier league player nowadays.

Sadly that seems to be true 10m really doesn't buy you an awful lot from anywhere and for English players it buys you a bit of potential and not a lot more!

Still waiting to be part of any matchday squad though. Anyone heard any further about Bournemouth trying to get Asmir Begovic for £12m?

He was sat on the bench yesterday, was he not in the squad then?

We should definitely try and get Begovic in the summer if Forsters form doesn't improve.

Because of the huge contract we have just given him, I can't see us looking at anyone, unless of course someone comes in for him. Begovich is wasted on the bench at Chelsea though. Decent keeper

Jagielka would be an awesome signing in the short term, we can't fully rely on the youngsters if Yoshi or VvD are out for any length of time. VvD, Jagielka and Yoshi are all captains, be nice to have that option.

With regards to Forster, he has been under tabs by Arsenal for a while and may move for him in the summer as competition to Cech.

Never rated Jagielka as a CB. he doesn't pick the flight of a crossed ball well at all. This position is so crucial - they all are these days I suppose - but if you can get two pacey fullbacks and a dominating decent centre you are in almost every game. I'd be disappointed if we `settled' for him.

Claude Puel says Southampton will continue to consider the possibility of signing a new defender following the departure of José Fonte.

The centre-back departed St Mary’s for West Ham United last week, and Puel says the club are keeping abreast of possible replacements.

He reiterated, however, that they would only bring someone in who would improve the squad and that he retains full faith in the players he already has.

“We will study possibilities to replace him,” Puel told reporters at a press conference ahead of the EFL Cup semi-final with Liverpool. "That’s normal. There is a possibility until the end of the market.

"For the moment at centre back we have Maya Yoshida, van Dijk, Gardos and Jack Stephens, and we will see if we have an opportunity, or if we will stay with our confidence in these players. We will see at the end of the market.

“For me, I am happy with all the squad and I respect my players. I am happy with these players and if one or two come into the squad then I think it will be important they can bring something more than the players for the moment in the squad.”

Di Marzio update says we want to buy Gabbiadini but not for their asking price which will scupper a deal unless it is lowered.

Jagielka would be a dire signing IMO, a downgrade on Fonte, older, slower, on a big decline the last 12 months - the same reason he is out of the picture at Everton. Would rather blood Stephens.
