What's gone wrong with my car?

I was just driving down the road and then there was a hissing sound. I got home and now when the engine is revved (and the turbo kicks in) it makes this sound (a sort of hissy rattle). I guess it's the turbo as the noise is coming from this area. Is the turbo ****ed or is it something else?

I would guess it is NC peddling as fast as he can behind you on his folding shopping bike. The hissing is probably just a fit of Jealousy.

On a serious note, the hissing might be due to a vacuum leak????

Could be a turbo hose has split, that would account for the hissing, but not the rattle?

I thought that. I've removed the air filter so a friend who's amechanic can have a look. TBH it's more hissing than anything.

Is the rattle waste-gate chatter? It's something that occurs most of the time on a turbo as you reach the red-line and the excess pressure is vented through the recirculation valve. If a vacuum hose has split, the waste-gate may be operating at a lower pressure. This would explain the hissing and the metallic rattle but you'd also notice quite a power drop as you're giving it some beans.

Could well be what your saying as the rattle is metalic. Is the vacuum hose the one that goes to the air filter?

Ouch.. That's gonna hurt.

Oooooh, that sounds expensive.

My mate who's a mechanic told me to get one from a breakers. This one he recomended (worth noting the link if you drive a VW or Audi) http://www.vw-audi-specialists.co.uk/intro.html. Ordered the whole turbo for £200 including VAT and Delivery. The average other quotes i was getting were between £350 and £450 - god knows what they'd cost for new.

Reckon he'll charge me under £100 to fit it, so not as painful as it would be if i'd gone to a normal garage. Reckon you'd be talking about £1,000.

It's not even worth replacing it with a second hand one, IMO. You might only get a thousand miles out of that one.

I'm no expert, far far from it, but the lad who looked at mine used to work for audi and he said the turbos never go on them because they are the best you can get. Mine obviously was the exeception, but i guess from what he said there's a fair chance a second hand one from a right off will be ok.
