Here are just "some" of the new features for 2010. Many more will be unveiled in the coming weeks. Remember all screenshots are "work in progress".

Improved Match Engine - improved AI, over 100 new animations in 3D mode, new stadiums and crowds, improved pitch degradations and better lighting make for the most immersive pitch-side experience ever.

Match Analysis - a match analysis tool that shows you where shots, passes, crosses, headers, tackles, fouls and interceptions have been made on the field for both teams. See this analysis both live in game, and post match, allowing you to pinpoint the weaknesses and strengths of both your team and your opponents.

New User Interface - a completely new vibrant look and feel to the game, plus a navigational overhaul. The side menu is replaced by an intuitive tab system, based on extensive consumer feedback and usability studies, which allows you to access all areas of FM 2010 quickly and easily.

Tactical Overhaul - a new tactics module makes it much easier to make your team play as you want them to. There are thousands of possible pre-set options and touchline "shout" instructions for making instant changes to your teams playing style. Don't worry; the old system is still there for people who love their sliders.

News Center - a subscription based newspaper. Get the news about the football world around you that you want, and not the news you don't want.

New Data Editor - including a brand new Competition Editor allowing you to add competitions and extra levels for leagues currently in the game, and add completely new competitions and leagues all via a very simple to use editor. Plus, the new editor allows you to keep your game up to date more easily than ever before.

LONDON (August 12th, 2009) – Sports Interactive & SEGA Europe Ltd. can today announce that Football Manager™ 2010 for PC and Apple Macintosh, and Football Manager Handheld™ 2010 for Sony PSP will be released on October 30th.

Football Manager 2009 is the most successful in the Football Manager series to date, clocking up 22 weeks at No.1 in the UK (PC charts) and selling in excess of 1 million copies worldwide, as well as being voted the 2nd best video game of all time in a recent Radio 1 poll. According to data gathered from Football Manager 2009, people played the game for an average of 240 hours each. However, developer Sports Interactive has been made aware via the vibrant Football Manager community that the addition of big new features in the last few releases has come at the expense of attention to existing areas of the game and solving long standing issues.

With this in mind, Sports Interactive has spent the last year working closely with consumers and the Football Manager community to implement key improvements to this year’s game. Football Manager 2010 features new tools and changes across the board including some big additions to improve ease of use, navigation and feedback from the game with the introduction of a brand new match tactics system, the debut of a Match Analysis tool, a completely new look and new User Interface among other features.

“We have worked very hard with the Football Manager community to target not only the areas of the game that needed re-working but also what we could add to improve what’s already there. We’ve also conducted extensive usability studies which has led us to overhaul the whole presentation of the game, which we’re really excited about,” said Miles Jacobson, Studio Director at Sports Interactive. “There has been a lot of polish to existing areas of the game but it’s also driven us to introduce changes to answer some of the feedback. We’re very confident that having done that we will deliver the very best Football Manager to date in October.”

The introduction of a Tactics Creator makes it easier to instruct the team to play the way the manager wants, alongside the introduction of touchline ‘shouts’ and quick tactic changes for instantly altering your team’s playing style during the match. Working with coaches from various levels of football, alongside some of the Football Manager communities most respected independent tacticians, the game now has an extensive array of pre-set tactical options allowing the user to select a player’s role in the team (such as ‘Ball winning midfielder’ or ‘Deep lying playmaker’), however the option to use the old ‘slider’ controls remains.

Feedback from matches has been improved to give the user better insight into where their team is going wrong, or right. A new Match Analysis tool lets players see where shots, passes, crosses, headers, tackles, fouls and interceptions have been made on the field for all players on the pitch. Managers can view this analysis both live in-game and post match, allowing them to pinpoint the strengths and weaknesses of both their team and their opponent’s and adjust their tactics accordingly.

Football Manager 2010 features a brand new User Interface, with a light and a dark skin to choose from as part of a vibrant new look and has undergone a complete navigational overhaul. The side bar navigation of previous years has been replaced by an intuitive tab system at the top of the screen, making Football Manager’s famed depth easier to navigate and will make the game more accessible to new players.

A brand new Data Editor will allow the addition of new divisions to existing leagues and of entirely new leagues as well as making it easier than ever to keep the game up to date, and do so for free. The delivery of information to the manager has been refined with users now able to sign up to the News Centre, an in-game subscription based newspaper that lets you get the news that you want about the football world and filter out the stories that you do not need, making the football world as immersive as you want it to be.

Following the debut of a 3D match view in Football Manager 2009, this year’s release sees a revamp with improved AI, over 100 new animations for the 3D pitch view, new stadiums, crowds, realistic pitch degradation and better lighting, creating an even more realistic match experience.

Further new features will be announced via a series of blogs in the months leading up to the game’s October 30th release date which will ensure that Football Manager retains its position as the most realistic, most played, highest reviewed and best selling football management simulation in the world.

Football Manager Handheld 2010 also has a host of new features and improvements, including a brand new skin for the game and improved match engine AI.

I take it you can still watch the matches in 2D if you like? I prefer that to the LMA -type match animations you get in the 3D mode.

True but Saints just wouldn't f*cking win...no matter who I signed or how I played.

Tried 3 different games then gave up on the game and didn't play it again as it was just so annoying.

Loved FM08.

FWIW o_rly, I thought Saints were p*ss easy last year, if you were good at finding brilliant freebies.
On the original managed to get up through the play-offs, and on the patched version got promoted automatically in my second season.

Matthew Le God

Jaidi and Papa Waigo with both be included straight away in FM10 along with all the previous Pardew signings including Mellis and Trotman on loan.

It is short term loans that aren't included. So for example Tommy Forecast won't be on loan to Grimsby as he is only on loan for a month.

No it wasn't. You just had to try a little bit as opposed to playing 442 and winning every week. I managed to get saints to the Champions league and 3 2nd place finishes in the prem(no wins though) inside the 6 seasons.

I don't know whether your NDA prevents you from answering this MLG, but I'm curious as to how you've set things up to get Markus Liebherr into the game? Usually of course he'd just be Chairman, but if we're being true to real life, obviously we now have Nicola Cortese as Exec. Chairman with Markus taking his 'back seat' role. But I can't see how that could work in the game and still reflect Markus as our Owner.

My guess would be you've had to put Markus as Chairman, with Cortese as Managing Director perhaps?

Any idea if any additional licenses have been secured this time around?

A very minor thing but it always bugged me if I was a side who had badges etc playing against a side who didn't, or vice versa.

Bundesliga licensing would go down a treat :)

You can very easily download all badges/logos/facepacks of those leagues that aren't licensed. EA hold alot of licenses long term so hard to get hold of.

I may again create a "superpack" download with all you need this year and post it on here.

I looked into that last year, but there was so much crap out there I gave up.

If you were able to do a superpack for FM10, I would be eternally grateful! I'm sure it's some form of OCD, but I enjoy it more when I'm playing a league with a license.

That said, the first game I play is always with Saints, so no problems there :D

Some people have been asking about the security systems on FM10. So here is the news and it will be easier than last year. :)

From SEGA

Hi, I'm Ben, and I'm the senior global brand manager for Football Manager at SEGA.

During the development of Football Manger 2009 we (both SEGA and SI) were committed to developing and implementing an effective and simple way to combat the piracy that has taken place on each of the Football Manager titles to date. Due to some mistakes on our part, and some malicious external acts, the method chosen to stop piracy resulted in extensive headaches and difficulty in activating and playing Football Manager 2009. This was the last thing we wanted.

As a result of those issues we have been investigating both revised and totally new anti-piracy and activation solutions for Football Manager 2010. We have not been able to find and test a solution that we can guarantee will provide purchasers of Football Manager 2010 with no issues at all.

Therefore customers that buy genuine Football Manager 2010 boxed copies will be able to play the game with no activation. Players using this route will be required to have the DVD in the drive at all times whilst playing.

People choosing to buy digitally from STEAM will receive a version of the game protected by STEAM’s standard activation and DRM and all the benefits and add –ons you get from activating with STEAM, which Miles deals with below. Activating or buying through STEAM means that you do not need to have the DVD in drive when you play following activation.

Consumers buying the PC version through other digital download partners will receive versions of the game protected by Uniloc and including DRM, containing a much improved system over the one used on FM2009 and fixes to all the common errors experienced. There is not a digital download solution that meets our criteria that is not DRM based, so as we still wanted to provide digital download versions of the game, this was the best solution.

Consumers buying the Mac version through digital download will be able to do this via our normal Mac partner, eSellerate.

Long term we remain committed to finding a solution to the piracy that we see every year with Football Manager on the PC / Mac. We will be working with our community throughout the coming year to test and gather opinion on possible solutions with the aim of finding a way of ensuring that everyone that plays Football Manager games in the future pays a fair price for the game, without hindering their enjoyment of it.

Thanks

Ben

From Sports Interactive

So it's now over to me to explain the situation with the installation process of the boxed copies, stat collection and in game advertising for Football Manager 2010.

First off, installation of the PC version.

PC users will have 2 choices when installing the boxed game as Ben mentioned above.

The first is a DVD based copy protection system that requires you to have the DVD in the drive at all times whilst playing. This is something that we hadn't considered previously, as we know a lot of people listen to music when playing our games, but with music being so digitally based in the modern era, we hope it doesn't cause too many issues. With this method, there is no registration required, nor do you have to be online at any time to play the game. This method is not auto-patching, so when patches and updates are released, you will need to download them manually (we will be providing patches and updates via the BitTorrent method and any mirror sites of the file that appear).

The second is via STEAM, which is an online based system. By installing via this method, you need to be online the first time you install the game and can easily set it up to play offline in the future. By using the STEAM route, you will automatically receive any patches or updates that we provide for the game in the future (as long as you are online, of course).

There are also extra benefits this year from installing via STEAM. One of these will be a STEAM exclusive skin, which is an updated version of the FM09 skin (including tree menu) which will be available a few weeks after launch.

The second is achievements. STEAM as a platform have had achievements available for many games over the years, and we will have 60 achievements that are attainable to give you bragging rights over your mates. For those who have played the Xbox 360 releases of Football Manager in the past, you will be well aware of some of them, and I'll be giving the full run down of the achievements in a future blog.

The third is that with STEAM you can play the game on any PC that is connected online by downloading the STEAM client and logging in with your user details, with no need to take the DVD with you.

As STEAM is not available for the Mac, Mac boxed copy users will just have the one method of installing, which will require the DVD to remain in the drive whilst playing the game. Mac patches will be provided in both bittorrent and download form.

We are still partnered with IGA (in game advertising) for at least Football Manager 2010. It will (as introduced in a patch for FM2009) be possible to turn off the hyperlinks on the adverts. You will only be served adverts if you are online whilst playing the game, and the adverts only appear in situ, so are only on the advertising hoardings around the side of the pitch.

With stat collection, we have read the concerns that were brought to our attention when we spoke about this earlier in the year. We have therefore spent some time splitting off the stat collection from the other areas of the game where it was integrated, and there will be an "opt out" option in the games preferences screen.

However, we would really encourage people to allow us to collect the hardware stats that we do. It's made a massive difference to us as a dev team to be able to deliver a better gaming experience to people by being able to see our users hardware information. We're able to concentrate the functionality and compatability testing for the game much better by using these stats, which will mean that the game should play better on any system that was able to play the game last year, and make the game more compatible out of the box with some of the graphics cards that had to download files separate to the game last year to get it up and running.

Cheers

Miles

Also very glad to see the additional tactical analysis tools added in this year... got a feeling I'll be digging about in those quite a lot :D

Have to say i felt they all looked the same as last year, and the year before that. Only thing which looked different was the skin, the concept was the same.

Will check out the reviews for it when it comes out and decide to buy it or not from that.

So you base your decision on other peoples reviews rather than playing the demo?

Those videos show the game has made significant changes to certain modules and you are just trying to find things to be negative about.

It is a football management game, what else are you expecting? The fundamentals aren't going to change it so much into becoming Halo or The Sims!

Does FM09 have backroom advice system of FM10? No it doesn't.

Does FM09 have a tactics wizard? No it doesn't.

Does FM09 have stadiums, fans, weather effects, the over 100 new animations of FM10? No it doesn't

Does FM 09 have the massively improved and accurate match engine of FM10? No it doesn't

etc etc etc :D

When i say concept i mean as in the presentation of it. It is a football management game but looks and acts like it did 10 years ago. As i mentioned before look at Fifa 10 and then Look at Fifa 2000. Light years apart in the terms of presenting that sport.

Football Manager just seems stale now. Lack of ideas in how to take the series forward.
I think it might have been on Eurogamer last year about the football management genre where they said that games developers have advanced so far in what they can do but some have not moved an inch. I think Si games are one of those developers.

They need to scrap it and go fully 3d. Have realisitc graphics that show realistic games. Have more realisitc inteaction that actually does something rather then clutter up your time with things that actually have no purpose i.e their take on player interaction. Have proper comentary, a 2d database is less of a resource hog then a 3d game but yet FM takes fecking years to do anything. You can play a game like Total War with thousands of different AI units all firing at each other on a life like terrain and it will act flawless. But FM which is less complex takes years and years to load. Even if it is to just see 1 result...

As i have stated to you before my personel opinion is they need to get real. The series is in deep **** and based on those videos it might as well be 09 or 08. Im pretty sure most people will agree.

Matthew Le God
06-10-2009, 10:32 PM
Is that why FM09 was the biggest selling game of the series and top of the UK PC game charts for 22 weeks?

And as for your point about speed FM10 will be significantly quicker to play compared to FM09

Speed tests have been carried out and show...

Full match detail – a speed increase between Football Manager 2010 and Football Manager 2009 (fully patched) of 16%.

Quick match detail – a speed increase between Football Manager 2010 and Football Manager 2009 (fully patched) of 43.5%

Surely this must be the most promising FM with Saints?

Also how much input do you get into the future, say Saints finally achieve promotion to the PL, will Liebherr raise the bar?:)

Just in case anyone asks. David Connolly won't be at Saints in FM10 as data lock was a while ago. He will be included in any data update though. :)

Michail Antonio won't be either as he is only a short term loan and they are never included in FM.

System specs for FM10 are the same as FM09's...

PC
OS - Windows XP/Vista/Windows7
Processor - XP - 1.4ghz or faster Vista/W7 - 2.0hgz or faster
Memory - XP-512MB Ram, Vista/W7 - 1GB Ram
Video Card - 128MB minimum. Nvidia FX 5900 Ultra or greater; ATI Radeon 9800 or greater; Intel 82915G/82910GL or greater.
Earlier cards may only display 2D Match Viewer Mode and are not supported.
Laptop versions of these chipsets may work but are not supported.

Mac
Intel Processor, OS X 10.5, NVidia Geforce 7300 GT / ATI X1600 Radeon

Please note, if you system doesn't meet the requirements, the game may work, but SEGA do not offer support on these machines. Best bet is to try the demo if you fall into that category.

Football Manager 2010 has the real fixture lists licensed for these leagues. So if you manage Southampton your first league game will be against Millwall at St. Mary's.

Leagues that SEGA have brought the rights to the fixture lists are...

English Championship
English League One
English League Two
Blue Square North
Blue Square South
Blue Square Premier
SPL
MLS
Portuguese First Division
K-League
Welsh Premier League
French First Division

For all other league you can now use the editor to create real life fixture lists yourself or download the ones other people have created for the Premiership etc.

Oh...and the demo is out very soon :)

There will be two versions.

1) A "vanilla demo" which will be much smaller in size and have a small database from a few league and have no club logos, kits etc.

2) A "strawberry demo" which will be around 1MB and have lots of the images, player photo, kits, comp logos etc with a quickstart database.

Both have quickstart databases which will mean that they are basically the same savegame each time you start a demo game (eg manager shortlist etc will be the same).

They have all the features of the full game but are restricted to half a season. You can also continue your demo savegame into the full game. However as the database is restricted it would probably be better to start again with the full game.

I would recommend Football Manager 2010 it is from the makers of the CM games you played. The current Championship Managers are unrelated to the CM's of pre 2004. If you only want to buy and sell players and tactics then you can as you can get the assistant manager to do everything else.

Mate, yes, it's possible - just compared the Hamble ASSC squads with real life and FM10 and there is only a couple of the players retained (but about 18 youth players) kinda understandable really. That said, its possible to manage them (go to the link above and grab the data file from that site)... you can also guarantee that eventually someone will bring out updates for all these leagues so the real players exist. :-)

Well as there was a postal strike on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and never any post on a Sunday and a backlog of millions and millions of letters/parcels is it really a surprise? ;)

Why does Swindon have pretty much every players picture but Saints only have a few. This is upsetting.

Because Southampton did not send the photos to SEGA and Swindon and practically every other Football league club did.

So blame Nicola Cortese or ask him why they didn't at the next fans forum ;) :D

game is good but i do worry that its become too detailed. There are alot more options to play around with and as a result the UI has become cluttered. Will still buy it and waste hours on end with with future versions that FM doesnt outgrow FM

Looks like we'll all have to rely on free transfers then, anyone got any good suggestions?

After promotion to the Champ I brought in Demarcus Beasley, Saha, Dorian Dorvite, and Amdy Faye all on frees. Saha has been rubbish but the others have been quite good. Currently 6th after 20 games, but not playing all that well and having trouble scoring goals, but scarping enough 1-0 wins to be at the right end of the table...lost to Pompey though. Like you received no/little transfer budget (£20k to be exact). I'm hoping for something come January.

Does anyone play with all the leagues selected? How long does that take to load after end of each turn?

Would very much depend on the spec of your PC. Unlikely many home computers in the world are powerful enough to run all the leagues from over 50 nations possible in the game. Around 10 nations with all leagues selected runs very well on mine and I reckon I could easily do alot more. On the game setup it now gives you a 1-5 star rating analyzing your own PC's spec to tell you how well the league setup will run. My advice would be to experiment with this. :)

I must ask... what is your spec firstly?

I am running about 141 leagues (with all players, clubs retained, lol) at the moment on a half decent laptop (dual core t9400, 4gb ram, windows 7, 2.53ghz) and the runtime between games is around 7 minutes, maybe 15 in total if you account all the farting around I do with the squad, training, tactics etc (I do alot!)

What I'd love to have is a 8gb quadcore desktop for FM.... one day.... one day.... :)

Yep there are now 3 types of sugar daddy. Only Chelsea, Man City and Notts County have the splash the cash sugar daddy. Saints have a "background sugar daddy".

I will try and get this changed for the next data update however SI are likely to want to see us spend more cash in January to show as evidence that Saints warrant this kind of chairman long term.

Yep and that may change in any update aswell.

It is hard to tell atm exactly what Liebherr will do as we still have little to base any decision on. By the signings so far it looks very likely but it is hard to convince SI that this is the case. I think it is very likely though that I will be changing the type of sugar daddy he is. You can do it yourself in the editor if you want to before any update.

So he's a sugar daddy that doesn't really back his manager and sells players behind the managers back?

Brilliant sugar daddy he sounds.
