Best known in this country for his hit with Good Thing Going (a cover of a Michael Jackson song). But before and after that he made a string of excellent records, first on the mighty Studio One label and later on his own Black Roots label. He worked with such greats of Jamaican music as Coxsone Dodd, Michael Campbell (aka Mikey Dread) and Sly and Robbie and was also a major pioneer in the development of the massively popular dancehall style of the early eighties.

Died unexpectedly at the age of 54. RIP Sugar.

I fell in love with reggae, ska and the brilliant dance music of the late 70's and early 80's's. "Good Thing Going" was played a lot and is surely the song he will be best known for though as per the OP the Black Roots record label was also well known and highly regarded. RIP Sugar Minott, you and your music will be sadly missed.
