Died tonight aged 61.

Great player, superb entertainer, complete nutter.

RIP.

The man who first got me interested in snooker.

I hope one of the TV channels does a tribute showing some of his entertaining matches where he miscues shots, balls go flying everywhere and still end up in the pocket.

Absolute legend

dont know how he lasted this long tbh, but RIP just the same. The stuff legends are made of, in his day he was possibly the only player that made the game interesting/exciting to watch, it was telling that he chose to play his few doubles matches partnering Jimmy White.

I think the Belfast's Runnin' Riot sum up Alex well in this song. An alcoholic hero.

ALCOHOLIC HEROES

© Runnin' Riot

He’s the greatest player the world has ever seen

Geordie we love you the crowds all scream

But Geordie doesn’t care what the crowds all think

Is it near full time then I’ll get some drink

Chorus 1:

Geordie, Geordie, Geordie, the fans all sing

Geordie, Geordie, Geordie, he can do anything

Geordie, Geordie, Geordie, he could have gone far

But Geordies too fond of the bar

He’s the greatest player the world has ever seen

He’s Hurricane Higgins king of of the green

Alex doesn’t care what the crowds all shout

He’s gonna pot the black then he’ll get some stout

Chorus 2:

Hurricane Higgins the papers say

Hurricane Higgins he could go all the way

Hurricane Higgins he’s never a loser

But Higgy's too fond of the boozer

Bestie and Higgy they’re part of folklore

Geordie and Alex they know the score

You can take them out of Belfast and give them loads of loot

But you’ll never take away their Working Class roots

Chorus 1

Live youtube of the song:

Great band, great song.

The sort of sportsman that you thought you knew, the sort of character that (along with many others in snooker's heyday) made you want to be good at the game. Maybe (probably) it's my age but has the game ever matched the popularity and had the characters of the 70's and 80's since?

Not just the game of snooker but the world of sport is a poorer man today.

I little voice inside my head just said to me "he won't be happy with that" in a forced whisper, a hark back to the good old days of 'Pot Black'.

RIP Hurricane (blimey, 2 hurricanes in one day)!!!!

He and Oliver Reed stayed in a hotel i was manager of in Osterley, west London, whilst they were recording a song and doing interviews for sky, whose main studios were around the corner,he was an absolute gentleman and all round funny guy.

Having a beer with those two will live long in my memorys.

Ruddy legend.

RIP.
