Unions are there to protect their members and would not have told those drivers to go on strike as its ilegal.Therefore to say the unions are greedy is wrong.

I dont know the ins and outs of the reasons they want to strike,but it should only be used as a last resort.

To be fair to the Unions, it can't be down to them as disputes are never about pay.

There must be a health and safety reason somewhere as their primary concern is the safety of passengers

The management of LUL decided, unilaterally, that Boxing Day would be paid as a normal day, against all agreements. The tube drivers are, naturally, very angry. Why should they get paid standard rate for working at a time that they should be at home with their families. The rail network is closed on Boxing Day, so why not the tube?

Oh yes, I know. Because the retail sector want to be able to sell as much as they can on the first day of the sales, so they need customers, and f*** Johnny Worker, he can put up or shut up.

However, when these tube drivers signed their contracts, they were told that bank holiday pay would be paid at a premium. Basically for the management to change things like this is breach of contract, plain and simple. I.e. Illegal...

I used to get treble time and a day off for working Xmas Day and the same for new year. Just treble time for boxing day, shouldnt a family sit down together over the Xmas break? Or get hansomely recompensed for not doing so?

I failed to appreciate the magnitude of Gemmels influence. Strewth, if i'd known he was so powerful i wouldn't have immediately lost my sense of proportion or balance when i first saw the title of the thread, as I was predetermined to do in the Verbal Universe. Gemmel, you need to calm down mate, cause and effect and all that.

Boxing Day is not a bank holiday, therefore they should get normal pay for a Sunday. No doubt they will be getting extra on 27th December which is a bank holiday.

As an aside, I wonder how many of the tube drivers who are working over Christmas are Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, etc etc? They of course will be exploiting the situation.

DSM just making stuff up, they were never told that they would get bank holidays at a premium, they signed up for a flat rate on enhanced salaries.....negociated by guess who..... Oh yes the union..... but they dont like it now, they want some more.

Tube bosses maintain that bank holiday working is covered by a long-standing existing agreement. Drivers get enhanced pay - up to £45,000 a year - but this includes flat-rate working including bank holidays without extra.

Aslef maintains that the network has become so much busier and train services far more frequent that the original agreement must be renegotiated.

It's really surprsing that the Union scum choose a strike on a day to cause maximum pain to the public.

As I am sure you worked out the "Not getting to Football" is nothing more than a distraction (Plus it turns out most tubes will be running), it is the principals of all of this.

However in the worst econmic downturn of our life times (Well most of us) the unions have decided that they dont want to stick with what they previously negociated, they want more and some.

In order to try and bully and pressure their employers, they have chosen to do it on a key day, with complete disregard to the public they are paid to serve.

It's a total disgrace and given the number of people who would welcome that sort of work and that sort of money, they should be rewarded with the sack and their jos given to those willing to do it on the terms of the existing contracts.

There was an interesting interview in the Guardian the other day with Bob Crowe. He sees that his job is to get the best deal he can for his members. From this point of view he is an undoubted success. However, despite his £100k+ a year salary he thinks of himself as a marxist who cares about "the working class" but can't see how his unions actions cause massive disruption to millions of ordinary workers.

In my view he is actually a very effective capitalist. He abuses the monopoly position of his drivers in a vital industry to extract the maximum return to his members - no matter the cost to anyone else.

Ignore him Pancok. DSM has been proven to be a liar and a cheat. He tried to make the London Underground bosses back down by threatening them with legal things, claiming this and that, but after a little checking he has been rumbled. The cheating leftie can't even fabricate a simple story.

The way I see it is that 80% of the people in this country are officially Christian, but a tiny fraction, maybe 1% of those people, actually take it seriously and worship. So the question shouldn't be how much extra these lazy train drivers get on Boxing Day, but why aren't they working Christmas day, at normal rates - clearly most of them are not religious (judging by national figures) and given that 75% of London is made up up foreigners, most of these drivers aee cleraly not christian and probably don't have family over here anyway that they would spend christmas day with.

Why do you always go back to what you do for a living as a benchmark for everyone else. You chose to go into the services, and you all do a magnificent job. But why continually side against working people when they are in dispute with their employer. You are a little myopic and seem happy to criticise when not armed with all the facts and your argument always seems to be in context with your own unique career in the services.

For the person moaning about the salary of the tube drivers, it's all relative. I'll bet the management are on high salaries relative to their drivers, and they no doubt do not have to wrk Boxing Day at all.

The MD put a token half hour appearance to give the impression that he was working and made sure everyone saw him. Then he 'd get in his car and spend the rest of the day with his family, f*cking hypocritical c*nt. We eventually agreed with a more enlightened management to once again stop work on Boxing Day.

Do you really think that? How does the RMT negotiating a better deal of its workers make anyone else better off? Tube strikes cost unsalaried workers that don't get to work on time and the higher salarise of tube staff are passed on to consumers i.e. other workers.
