Migraines

Just got out of bed for the first time today.

Never had a migraine before, Christ they're not nice.

What the hell causes them?

Hope I don't get one again!

I regularly get a really sharp pain behind my left eye, that if i dont take something for it will start causing me to vomit etc.

I used to call it a migraine, that was until I had my first REAL migraine last year and it took 3 days to return to normal. You have my sympathies!

Supposedly, some migraines are caused by a difference in blood supply between the brain and the rest of the skull. The problem can actually start in your neck - the muscles pull the scalp too tight. This is more a tension headache, which can trigger a full blown migraine in the susceptible.

I get quite a few migraines, that if I don't get painkillers in quickly will make me throw up. Occasionally I get the visual disturbance (sometimes without the headache, which may follow some time later) which is distinctly unpleassant.

You have my sympathy (as do the rest of the sufferers)

Horrible things. I've only ever had three, first time it was caused by driving into the sun with telegraph poles in front of it causing a sort of strobe effect, next one was working in a dark pub, I had to focus on a fairly delicate job, there was a window directly above what I was working on and the sun was streaming through it. That was in Shirley precint. I was in such a state by the time I finished, a copper saw me stagger out of the pub and towards my car hahahaa, he came over and asked if I planned to drive while clearly drunk. Explained the situation, he sat me down on a bench and went into the pub to check my story, then came back and grabbed a taxi for me, said to come back for my car tomorrow. Top bloke that.

I used to suffer from migraines regularly (brought on by flickering lights - low sun through trees etc.) when somebody recommended feverfew. I bought a plant, ate a leaf every day for a couple of weeks and now haven't had an attack for over twenty five years. I think that they make feverfew tablets now,

I get migraines when I mix up my sleep pattern. Like when we have a new born and the sleep is disturbed I get loads of them. I also get them when I have my 1 lay in of the week if I force myself to sleep just beccause I can. I am normally found rubbing my head with a migraine on a Sunday!!! Stupid body, as I am shattered for the rest of the week.

Also worth pointing out that a lot of "what seem to be Migraines" are related to the facial nerves around the outside of the head/face.

I used to suffer blinding pains, had to go lay down for a day or so. Was in the car one day and heard someone mention that some of these can be caused by facial nerves being out of kilter due to an imbalance in your jaw. the most normal cause of that being uneven bite caused by fillings etc.

Anyway, at the dentist some months later and asked and they got this blue carbon paper stuff out and yep one side of the jaw was raised up. They filed the tooth down and bingo - solved.

20 + years later had an attack here, Doc sent me to a facial nerve specialist and again after tests and X-Rays it came down to somehing similar caused by having Wisdom Teeth removed - so worth doing research on all the possible causes, the pains can be very similar when you try and describe them to a Doc. 10 minutes at the Dentist was a hell of a lot better than a life on meds

I'm pretty much exactly the same - lack of sleep triggers a migraine. I nearly always get a migraine a couple of days into a holiday as well.

A sore point in my life......have had my fair share.

I lose the feeling in my left hand, left side of my mouth and left side of my throat and tongue.....not too pleasant. I also get the flashing lights, tunnel vision and strange aura and am unable to make out what easy to read words actually say, all rather strange. Have thrown up a few times as well, usually if i dont take anything soon enough. Have had migraines playing footy, through stress as well, also found strong coffee and bananas to cause then, with Bananas being EVERY time. Also if i do prolonged sport on an empty stomach i am a shoe in for one.

Had a migraine a day about 10years back pretty much during my GCSE's, did the exam, went home, had migraine, went to bed, got up, did exam and so on. Fun.

Ended up that i am now prescribed weak beta blockers which i take every now and then, stressfull situations particularly and they are a fantastic preventative, prior to that i was suffering 2-3 a year.

Annoys me when people with a headache say they have a migraine, little do they know.....
