Offensive Posts

Recommended Posts

Being half Chinese, I'm gutted to see some of the terms some of my fellow Saints fans are using to describe a potential new signing. Some of the terms used are as offensive to Oriental people as words like n*gger, coon & wog are to black people yet it's all seen as a bit of a joke. In way, I hope Lee doesn't sign to spare him some of the support he'd get from some on here. It'll also be interesting to see whether Sordell, for instance, attracts the same style of comments if he were to sign...

Fair point and hope you're not too offended. What I would say is some of those terms have more to do with national stereotyping than racial abuse in the same way terms like micks, wops, jerries etc get bandied about. Its still wrong - and more immature than anything- and the fact that racial and national categories overlap definitely muddies things, especially if you're a racist c**t but I would contend there's a difference.

I'm amazed that the moderators haven't policed this thread better. There's some seriously offensive stuff floating around.

To be honest matey, I think you're the one stuck in the past. We live in a multicultural society, one community. Racial and xenophobic humour is all the more acceptable these days.

it's the PC brigade that have the problem.

Sickipedia....... Go on, treat yourself

If you quoting sickopedia to back up your point, you got issues mush.

Sod all to do with being pc, some things you don't do.

No place for racism at saints...

I think sickipedia is hilarious.

The thing that always baffled me with you PC brigade is why skin colour is such a big issue?! I mean what's the difference? I don't see any? Not really.

It bizarre, it's ok (although not really polite) to call Adele fat and ginger (stating fact) but is not acceptable to point out if somebody has slanty eyes? Would I be told off for pointing out that Le Tissiers nose is massive?

The problem is you people, I'm 29 and haven't known any different than a mixed race community. I have no prejudices or issues, but racial humor and stereotyping can be hilarious.

But anyway, I like the look of this fella, but we need more than just him

To an extent we are dammed if we do, damned if we don't. If we delete everything that could potentially offend someone on the forum there would be nothing left, if we leave some things on that we consider borderline are accused of being too leaniant. Please always do report any posts you find seriously offensive. I'll trawl the thread again now based on the issues people have raised.

We should focus this thread on the footballing abilities of Mr Lee and leave any slang / offensive terms and cultural stereotypes alone from here on in please.

It is a sad reflection of this site that to delete all offensive posts would leave nothing else to read. Surely the only way this site will become more welcoming and open to all is to delete inappropriate posts - particularly those with personal abuse in them. The culprits will soon learn that there is no point posting their vitriol and this site would become a place where all could engage in good natured banter.

with no moderation it is simply attracting the small minority of abusive posters who spoil the forum for everyone else.

I for one would post a lot more on here if I didn't think it would lead to a futile argument and I suspect many others feel the same.

I agree, I actualy shocked the moderators are condoning it. I'm sure if it was a black fella a people were calling him wog ****** monkey etc they would have something to say and rightly so.

It's no different to john terrys behaviour in my opinion.

A number of individual offences also carry instant permanent bans, including (but not necessarily limited to) posting pornographic images or links and blatant racism.

The moderating on this site has become shocking recently.

Despite the rules stating that anybody posting blatant racism or pornographic images WILL get an immediate and permanent ban, the mods have turned a blind eye to both in the last week, despite pornography and racism being posted on a part of the site open to minors, and they seem to be protecting certain posters. I'm pretty shocked at their condoning some pretty shocking posts lately. It's turning into a nasty, cynical place with stevegrant and baj's full backing.

The racist posts have been deleted now - but I haven't the faintest idea what pornographic images you're referring to.

Probably deleted now, but I don't mind admitting I reported it at the time as I don't need my kids seeing that kind of stuff, but it was certainly up on the board for some time, I guess the poster in question is under the protection of one of the mods who must've deleted the complaint without taking any action at all. How many instant, permanent bans have you dished out to the blatant racists so far then?

Actually the mod in question (me) deleted it, applied a sanction and then referred it to the other mods and site owners to see if that was an approriate level. I can assure you nobody is under protection as far as I am aware.

I guess I misunderstood what seems like a fairly clearly worded rule. You gave an infraction instead of a banning for posting porn, just like you don't seem to be banning for blatant racism, giving a level of protection to the posters involved. Having witnessed posters being banned or partially banned for sarcastic or irrelevant remarks and others lightly infracted for posting porn or blatant racism, I think I'll stand by my comment about poor modding.

Why does a thread about a footballer have to turn into a debate on racism?

Boring.

Because there are morons who are incapable of adding anything of substance to a thread and resort to 'humorous' racist posts to make them sound clever to their peers.

To the mods.

If Tadanari Lee does sign for our club, anyone who abused him using the racist language seen on this forum at a home game would be banned from SMS and would probably be facing criminal charges.

Similarly, if someone were to do the same in Southampton city centre they would also be liable to prosecution.

I have seen rather a lot of 'casual' racist language on this forum in the last 24 hours. I have reported it to the mods and today I see that the offending posts have been removed, including my own post in which I highlighted two members, who I described as 'racist scum'.

However, it seems that the only punitive action taken against these racists is the issuing of meaningless infraction points. According to St Chalet, this was done after consulting with other moderators.

Please would you be kind enough to explain why you have not permanently banned these people from the forum. It strikes me as rather bizarre that you do not consider banning an appropriate course of action for the use of racist language on this forum, when at a football ground or in the street, criminal proceedings could well be the outcome.

As far as I see it, the immediate bans for racism is for the more obscene offences, racial hatred, condoning racial violence etc.

Whilst your analogies are fair points, this place is more often compared to a pub and the banter that goes along with it. If you used one of the words that were used in the Tadanari Lee thread in a pub you would most likely get shouted down and told to shut up, and then after repeat offences be told to leave - which is exactly what the infractions system does.

Without naming names I can tell you that at least one poster is on their last chance, and one more infraction will automatically result in a ban.

Finally I can guarantee you that none of the mods or admin in any way condone or agree with racism at any level, nor are we protecting certain posters as you seem to think.

Saint Clark, your response to the points I raised is deeply insulting.

Firstly, you liken this forum to a pub. It is not a pub. It is an internet forum that can be viewed by children.

Secondly, there is a place for banter here: that's the Muppet show; and even there "Racist and homophobic comments or pornographic images are strictly forbidden and will result in infractions or bans".

These comments were on the Main board.

Thirdly, if I was in a pub with my wife (who is Chinese) and I heard the language used on Tadanari Lee thread then my response would be quite different from yours. Do you honestly think that it is acceptable to use this language in a pub? Really???? Would YOU say it to MY wife? Or, if you were a landlord and someone called my wife a 'Chinky' in your pub, would you merely shout them down and tell them to shut up? How many times would someone have to call my wife a 'Chinky' in your pub before you banned them. Three? Four? Five? Or perhaps more?

Finally, despite your "guarantee that none of the mods or admin in any way condone or agree with racism at any level", I am afraid you are wrong. You are turning a blind eye to racism, which makes you complicit.

Racism is racism. It's quite simple really. There are not 'socially acceptable' forms of racism that are ok in a pub or bar. All forms of racism are completely unacceptable.

You have missed an opportunity here. By being lenient you are saying that it's not a particularly serious offence to call an Asian person 'slanty' or whatever. You had the opportunity to make an example, to make a statement about the SWF policy towards racist language, and you and ALL of the 'moderators' have been found wanting.

Should this language appear again, I know that I will be wasting my time reporting it to the site moderators.

I may have explained myself poorly, but I still feel you've missed the point of what I was saying. We know that all forms of racism are unacceptable - I said so myself, but you simply dismissed it.

As for us turning a blind eye or you wasting your time - all posts that were reported have been dealt with. If we've missed one or two in a 6 page thread then I apologise, but we cannot check every post on every thread on every board.

You did NOT say that all forms of racism are unacceptable. You said that it would take "repeat offences" of words like 'Chinky' to invoke a ban in a pub situation (having already likened this forum to a pub). If this isn't condoning racism, I don't know what is.

So the message to racists from forum moderators is: You can use words like 'Chinky' on the main board more than once before you are banned.

Utterly pathetic.

And that is not the message at all. The message, as it has always been, is that if you do not take notice of warnings (infractions) and continue to break the rules then you will be banned.

"Racist and homophobic comments or pornographic images are strictly forbidden and will result in infractions or bans".

That's what it says on the forum's home page. To be honest I think that sentence slightly contradicts itself.

If something is "strictly forbidden" and someone does the "strictly forbidden" thing, and they get a slap on the wrist and told not to do it again, then the original something is not "strictly forbidden" because the consequences to their actions are not "strict"

Infracting someone for racism, makes racism on this site merely "frowned upon" or "naughty". If it was "strictly forbidden" the original offender would be banned temporarily if it's a first offence, and then permanently for a repeat offence. That is being "strict"

Surely it is getting very difficult to say what is rascist and what is not. I have heard people say that they going for a chinky take-away. Is that "rascist"? Is it meant in a derogatory way? I find it very confusing as to what and what is not acceptable when talking about black people. It seems to change. I said to someone the other day that "I was talking to this coloured guy". I did not mean it in a rascist way, but I understand that the word is now apparently offensive and that "black" is now O.K. Must be my advanced years, but I could do with an updated "do/don`t" glossary of terms that are currently acceptable and those that are not.

I would have thought that the most offensive word used on this and other forums is "mong", but this is hardly commented on.
