You get the benefits of the pace of an apartment combined with the facilities and entertainment of a hotel. Stayed at the Viva Sunrise in Alcudia a couple of years ago and it was very good. Lovely scenery round there, safe sandy beaches, and a very quiet relaxing holiday. Easy transfers from airport, only about 30 mins on a good run. Good to get up in the mountains on non- beach days. moonraker Posted 23 January, 2013 Share Posted 23 January, 2013 We have been to Polensa 5 times with family, it is very nice lots of good sightseeing nearby lovely beech and no high rise hotels. The town is well served with mainly Spanish run family friendly bars and restaurants. Its a 40 min drive from the airport and is near Alcudia. sandwichsaint Posted 24 January, 2013 Share Posted 24 January, 2013 Sorry to agree, we did Mallorca in Oct (first time) and stayed in Alcudia. Very relaxed, there is a strip, but it's all very laid back, ideal for families. We went for the cycling and were based in Pollenca (10 mins away in hire car). The whole of the north coast is a mix of mountains and beaches, nice weather, nice people, nice food. What's not to like? If you like it a bit livelier the south coast has the big 18-30 type resorts. If you want something a bit more cerebral, but still with nice food and nice weather, nipper went to Sicily this year, looked awesome on his photos and now on my to-do list. We used http://www.sealandvillas.com and had a great villa with pool which was surrounded by grapevines so had fresh grapes on tap plus in the graden there was a lemon tree and pomegrante tree, overdosed on fresh fruit. Beach is huge and very safe, usual watersports available. The town of Puerto Pollensa is not full of high rise hotels so is quite quiet, that said there are still plenty of restaurants and bars etc. We had a car for the whole 2 weeks we were there so got out and about into the mountains and other beaches, overall a great place to go. Essruu Posted 24 January, 2013 Share Posted 24 January, 2013 Another fan of Puerto Pollensa here. It's beautiful. A short trip inland to the village of Pollença is also a must if you're there. Cala d'Or is worth considering also; as is Porto Cristo, which is just south of Sa Coma and Cala Millor. I don't have any kids but if I did they would have loved it... The beach here isn't great though but if you hire a car there is a good one over the mountian, about 15 mins away. The best beach in Majorica according to most locals is Es Trench - http://www.mallorca-beaches.com/es_trenc_beach.htm on the southside of the Island. Always hired a car or a dirt bike to get around, and enjoyed driving out to the light house at Formentor, down to Porto Cristo to visit the Caves of Drach, or a drive down to Soller on the North coast of the island. The typical embarassing Brits abroad types. You always get at least one type of person in each hotel, the joker that thinks he's hilarious but is a ****, the bloke that has been everywhere and done everything, the family that look miserable and moan all the time and people that get really, really embarassingly p8ssed. Then you get a few couples who keep themselves to themselves but when you talk to them after a few days are really good company and you get on well. 100%Red&White Posted 25 January, 2013 Share Posted 25 January, 2013 Love Majorca, under 2 hours away (far enough with youngsters), even more so when you used to be able to fly out from Southampton with Thompsons. Sa Coma's great for young families (good safe beach) with nearby Cala Millor and Cala Bona. The only thing we found when we stayed there 10 or 11 years ago was most things, like waterparks, were the other side of the island. As others say, Alcudia is also great for families and Pollensa is next door and worth a visit. Santa Ponsa is another good shout with the buzz of Magaluf and the waterpark/Pirates 10 mins away in a taxi. Another great beach in a bay, one end you’ll find the ‘Irish Strip’ if you want the typical Brit-type holiday and the nearby ‘Square’ has a lot going on, the other end seems a little more sedate (and upmarket!).
