Cluj winning at Old Trafford and Liverpool thumping Madrid 4-0??

Unlikely, IMO. No dodgy decisions that I can remember, United put out a severely weakened team against Cluj (having only just scraped a win in the return game with a full-strength side), and Madrid were rubbish when Liverpool beat them - Liverpool won the first leg 1-0 in the Bernabeu as well.

Realistically, surely the whole point of match-fixing is to win money and not get caught, so it'll probably be a really inoccuous game where the outcome wasn't actually much of a surprise, hence it all went below the radar for so long.

The article further down does say United Kingdom, so might not be just England (even if there isn't a lot more there).

Although I really enjoyed them going through, Celtic's last day drama in their group is suspicious. A very, very soft penalty to see them through in the final minutes of their game, while at Barcelona the locals fielded 2 of their usual 11 starting players and were passive the whole way through except for when Messi came on for the last 5 minutes and Benfica started to get desperate (after sitting back when Spartak Moscow equalized earlier).

I hope we see some arrests in Lyon and Zagreb after that disgraceful show between OL and Dynamo a couple of years back.

Only one UK match suggests it's a team that's not been in the Champs League regularly during that time. (To me anyway, would have thought they'd have found a bigger pattern if a team had been there more.)

it's not about the teams, it's about the refs. If you want to work it all out and go all Hercule Poirot you need to follow the refs.

Hungariian,Turkish,Slovenian whatever, that's what will tell you matches are fixed, it's not about players per se.

I guess best case scenario for the English game at the moment is that it's suspicion on the opposition in whatever game it was.

(That said, if this is the tip of the iceberg, I'd find it bloody funny if it eventually turns out Pompey's brief foray into Europe is brought into it.)

I don't think it is an English team that the finger is being pointed at, just that one game played in this country is thought to have been affected - so that could be a ref, linesman, oppossition keeper, even the opposition kitman giving out team news, who knows. Can't see any big names from this country being caught up in this.

I would not be surprised if there are far more in the premier league. It is a huge business after all, and one that can be fixed very easily!

The fact that there's so much money sloshing around in players and agents' pockets in this country makes it much less corruptible, IMO.

I'd lay odds on it being Saints and the corrupt dealings of Klaus and unmentioned colleagues. Could even imagine his testimony to FIFA disclosed who he was involved with!!! No wonder our results in his final two years we so odd and got us relegated.
