strauss is looking very good, he's remembered you dont have to spend 5 hours getting a century. lets hope he can keep going.

we have to be thinking of a 500+ total from England

check this out for an unbelievable cricket moment on youtube http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2009/feb/15/australia-new-zealand

watched that catch live, was quite impressive. have to say tho, i've seen it once or twice before - albeit failed attempts - pietersen has definately done it. his heel was in contact with the rope as he caught it, fell back threw it up then caught it again. couple of summers back against teh indians iirc...anyhoo, good bit of cricket fo sho

well played england today, strauss especially. only two complaints from an otherwise impressive display. shah - wtf was he thinking? BIG pose for the cameras on the block shot, then thought oo i'll run! too late too late will be the cry when the man with the cricket ball passes you by...

as mentioned above, gotta be looking at 500+...

good ol' harmy...slings 4 awful balls down, couple of no balls to lull the batsman into a false sense of security then dishes up another shocker which gets rid of the dangerous Gayle....

you can't buy quality like that...

bowled him from the wrong end imo, wanted to see him from freddies end. be interesting to see what they all do today with the pitch supposedly getting livelyer each day

ENG 566-9

WI 285 all out

England have decided to bat next to get a quick 150 or so, let the pitch wear down some more. Its what the Aussies would do but the Windies looked hopeless in the last session, scoring very slowly before giving their wickets away. But saying that, England looked really good, fielding well, bowling economically and taking wickets when it mattered.

If Strauss can get another good total it will do him the world of good. But a couple of quick wickets would surely bring back memories of the 51 all out horror show in the last test (proper). Its been a good game and it could well have some twists and turns in its tail.

The only reason we didnt enforce the follow on is because 2 of the bowlers are ill / injured and its sooo hot out there for the rest of the guys too. Good decision imo, declare sometime after lunch tomorrow, gives us a day and a half to bowl them out

For some reason I get a bit nervous when we don't enforce the follow on. I just wonder whether we could have got through last night without using Harmison or Flintoff, and brought them back fresh this morning. If all had gone well, we may not have had to bat again, and they could have had a day or so extra rest before the next match.

As long as we don't spend too long scoring too slowly, we might be ok.

Another hour after lunch. Get as close to 500 as possible. Should be enough for a declaration surely?

yes it should be, bit of luck KP starts playing his shots and we can declare even sooner. Am very worried about the condition of Freddy though, it may be that Broad has to bowl alot more, which is possibly why he was under bowled yesterday? Swann will beliking what he is seeing from Benn and Hinds

KP tried to play his shots without much success, he was "run out" three balls before he was actually out but no-one claimed it.

Need to get Sarwan and Chanderpaul out a bit quick after lunch or the only result will be a draw.

Just one of them out would give them an end to work on. Though reading the BBC live text, it doesn't sound like we've caused them much trouble so far.

ok, lets get a grip! it was a flat track, always has been. when Lara got his 10,000 runs on it iirc smithy got 190 odd, match drawn. we did darned well getting that close to a victory. and with only 4 front line bowlers. if we'd declared earlier there would have been a danger of giving them a sniff, first thing you do is make sure you don't lose, then work on winning. lets not get too despondant about it...

Like everyone else I'm gutted by the result, especially considering how the Windies batsman were queuing up to give their wickets away on the evening of day three. the injury and illness that limited Flintoff and Harmiston definitely cost us the match.

but lets not get all 'ffs! what a load of rubbish!'. this was an incredible game of cricket that went down to the wire on the final day, bringing back memories of the unbelievable ashes series in 05. this is why test match cricket is such a special thing, building like an epic novel and ending like a pantomime, with every ball being cheered and booed in equal measures. well done England for coming back so well after the disaster of the first test, and well done windies for putting up such an incredible defence when it looked like they were doomed to fail.

the game was a draw but the future of test match cricket was the undoubted winner. its been a long time since we've been able to enjoy football, lets try and remember that there is still pleasure to be had in sport.

As much as I like Freddie and what he potentially brings to the team I often wonder whether his body is up to the job of test cricket. Obviously over the years, he has been at the core of the team and vital to some of England's successes (Ashes 05 and the subsequent celebration ;) ), but equally he seems to recover from one injury only to to suffer another during the first half of a test.

I have absolutely no idea whether or not this latest injury is related to his ankle problems, and I know that injury could strike any player. But it seems Freddie is more susceptible to injury than most, so can England really take that increased risk of losing Flintoff mid way through a match? A fully fit fifth bowler would probably have been enough to have won the test (it certainly wouldn't have hurt England's run total!) instead of a mildly disappointing draw from a very strong position.

That said, well done to the WIndies for a solid 4th innings performance, hopefully England have picked up a few tips on how to occupy the crease from that!
