• Ex Saint Dean Richards Dies

Former Southampton defender Dean Richards has passed away at the tragically young age of 36.

Dean Richards had played for Saints for two season between 1999 and 2001.

Richards began his pro career at his home town club Bradford City. A towering centre back, he quickly grew in reputation and after 3 years with the Bantams he went on to sign for Wolverhampton Wanderers. Initially this was just on loan but after impressive performances Wolves sealed his signature for a then club record fee of 1.85 million pounds.

After four solid years with the Wolves he allowed his contract to expire and stepped up to play in the Premier League with Saints. Richards proved to be one of Dave Jones' smartest signings and he quickly cememted himself as one of the first names on the team sheet. His finest time at the club was almost certainly as part of Glenn Hoddle's crusading side that threatened the european places in our last season at the Dell.

Hoddle's acrimonious departure also resulted in Dean Richards leaving the club. The fee of £8.1 million pounds was a staggering sum at the time for an uncapped defender, yet it also showed just how valued he was at the new St Mary's stadium and by his manager.

Richards went on to play over 70 times for Spurs before retiring in 2005 due to frequent dizzy spells and headaches caused by an ear infection.

After a long battle with this illness Richards passed away this morning. A truly tragic and terribly premature end for a talent that should surely have still been shining today.

On behalf of Saintsweb I wish to convey our sincere condolences to all of Dean Richards family and friends.
