Saints carried on their fine home form with a comfortable defeat of Charlton.

Saints faced Charlton Athletic for the second time in two weeks, hoping that old boy Bradley Wright-Phillips wouldn't be spoling the party again.

Nigel Adkins recalled Ryan Dickson and Frazer Richardson to the starting lineup in place of Danny Butterfield and the injured Dan Harding. Dale Stephens was also given his full Saints debut, replacing Richard Chaplow in midfield.

Rickie Lambert almost gave the hosts the perfect start, curling a free kick on target, Addicks keeper Rob Elliott saving smartly.

Charlton then showed how dangerous they can be on a quick break, Racon blazing down the left, his cross evaded Wright-Phillips but found Wagstaff, who should have opened the scoring.

Saints were playing with confidence though, and in the 11th minute, an inch perfect pass from Lee Barnard found the onrushing Guly, the Brazilian finishing cooly to break the deadlock.

Rickie Lambert nearly made it two, meeting Ryan Dickson's deep cross with his head, but Elliott was equal to it. Dickson was proving to be a menace to the Charlton back four, with his attacking link up play with Adam Lallana.

Radhi Jaidi nearly converted a Dale Stephens corner before Elliott denied Lee Barnard. Wagstaff then produced a fine save from Kelvin Davis before a Saints counter attack saw some smart play from Adam Lallana back heeling into the path of Lambert, who should have made more of the opportunity.

Dale Stephens debut was cut short through injury, Richard Chaplow replacing him at half time.

Saints started the second half as they had finished the first, full of confidence as they caused momentary panic in the visitors defence, but had to wait until the 59th minute to double their lead and end the contest.

Lee Barnard latched on to Elliott's parried save from Dean Hammond for a simple tap in.

Nigel Adkins replaced Adam Lallana who worryingly pulled up with Oscar Gobern on the half hour mark, and Lee Barnard had another test for Elliott before Guly was replaced by David Connolly.

Rickie Lambert lashed another effort wide as nothing seemed to fall from him, but Saints had already done enough.
