• Clyne & Shaw Called Up

Saints seventeen year old prodigy Luke Shaw and twenty-one year old Nathaniel Clyne have been called up to the England Under-21 squad today. They will feature for The Three Lions in a friendly against Sweden on Tuesday 5th February 2013.

Since breaking into Southampton's first team this season Luke Shaw has not only caught the eye of the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United but now England under-21 manager Stuart Pearce. Shaw has made an impressive 19 appearances for Southampton during their return season to the Barclays Premier League and this call up shows the bright future Luke has ahead of him. It was confirmed last month that a verbal agreement was made to sign a long term deal on the south coast when he turns 18 this summer.

Nathaniel Clyne has been considered as hot property since appearing for Crystal Palace at the age of 18. After making an impressive 123 appearances for the London based team he made the move to the south coast last summer. Featuring 20 times for Saints this term Nathaniel has shown his quality in defense as well as his ability attacking down the flanks. Clyne scored his first goal for Saints with a fine effort against Aston Villa during a 4-1 victory at St Marys.

The full call up list is as follows:

    Goalkeepers:
Ben Amos (Manchester United), Declan Rudd (Norwich City), Jason Steele (Middlesbrough)
    Defenders:
Ryan Bennett (Norwich City), Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton), Craig Dawson (Bolton Wanderers - loan from West Brom), Phil Jones (Manchester United), Tom Lees (Leeds United), Jack Robinson (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Southampton), Adam Smith (Millwall - loan from Tottenham Hotspur), Andre Wisdom (Liverpool)
    Midfielders:
Nat Chalobah (Watford - loan from Chelsea), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Will Hughes (Derby County), Henri Lansbury (Nottingham Forest), Jason Lowe (Blackburn Rovers), Josh McEachran (Middlesbrough - loan from Chelsea), Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)
    Forwards:
Benik Afobe (Bolton Wanderers - loan from Arsenal), Tom Ince (Blackpool), Connor Wickham (Sunderland), Wilfred Zaha (Crystal Palace - loan from Manchester United)

Good luck to the pair and hopefully this call up will be the first of many.

I always wondered why a man who made his name playing the long ball system was left in charge of a team that is supposed to play with passing football.

I woke up this morning to news on the Beeb radio that Mark Field had physically accosted a protester and that the footage was “shocking”.
