• England finally turn to Rickie Lambert

After complaining at a lack of fit English strikers, Roy Hodgson has called up the joint top English goalscorer in last season's Premier League; Rickie Lambert up to his squad to face Scotland next week.

In other international news Luke Shaw has also received another call up to the England u21 side.

The top English striker in last year's Premier League finally gets the recognition he deserves.

It was unexpected but still wonderful to see that Rickie Lambert has been called up to the latest England squad after being overlooked at the height of his form last season. 31 year old Rickie's reputation precedes him on the South Coast, having been an absolutely crucial member of our side which secured back to back promotions and then established itself in the Premier League.

It is extremely rare for a footballer of Rickie's background to gain international recognition, once released by Blackpool and having never played above League 1 level until his 29th year, his rise to acclaim has been meteoric. His qualities as a footballer are now unquestionable having proven himself at the top level, more then simply a finisher his link up play and dead ball ability is simply first rate. With memories of James Beattie being wasted as a lone striker against Australia ten years ago and Adam Lallana's token call up to the nation team last autumn we can only hope that if Rickie is given the chance to play it is in a position that plays to his strengths.

On the day when Lambert has also been blessed with the birth of a new baby daughter, we can all wish that Rickie excels himself in national colours. Congratulations on the call up Rickie.

Follow Saint Luke Shaw has also attracted international recognition, receiving a call up to the latest England u21 team. Luke was selected for the u21 championship this summer but withdrew due to injury. Good luck to Luke ahead of what will hopefully be his debut at u21 level.
