• Rickie Lambert secures England win against Scotland

The fairy-tale is complete, the former beetroot factory worker, the man once thrown onto the footballing scrapheap who worked his way up, became a hero with us as he fired us back and then helped establish us back in the Premier League wrote his name in history tonight. Rickie Lambert scored the winning goal with his first international touch at Wembley as England defeated Scotland 3-2.

Rickie celebrates the goal that his entire career has been leading up to.

After coming on for England on the the 67th minute, Lambert evaded the Scottish defence to latch onto a corner to put England in front for the first time in the game.

He nearly added a second after latching on to a ball across the box only to strike the post and shortly afterwards hit a placed shot straight at Scotland goalkeeper Alan McGregor. It was a truly incredible debut for a hard working, honest, talented, remarkable and yet totally grounded individual.

He left the pitch tonight with the whole stadium singing his name, the whole of Southampton is celebrating with you Rickie. We are so proud. Congratulations.

From League 1 and beyond to International hero.
