    STORY OF THE GAME:

Aston Villa nicked a goal just before the interval that saw them steal a point from a wasteful Saints side.

Southampton started strongly at St. Mary's, but chances were spurned by José Fonte, Dušan Tadić and Graziano Pellè before the Villans went in front just moments before half-time.

After a corner was allowed to travel across the face of the six-yard box, Joleon Lescott was on hand to poke home to give the visitors the lead.

Despite having 64% possession and 23 shots, Southampton were able to find the back of the net just once.

That occasion came in the 73rd minute, when substitute Oriol Romeu stabbed home from close range having only been on the pitch for 10 minutes.

The point was only Villa's sixth in 15 games, with the failure to win causing Saints to slip to 12th.
