• MATCH REPORT: Twente 1-2 SAINTS - Preseason

Goals from Virgil van Dijk and Sam Gallagher carried Saints to victory.

Saints made it two wins from two on their preseason tour of Holland, following up a 4-0 win over PEC Zwolle with victory against FC Twente.

Claude Puel named Harry Lewis between the sticks, while Pierre-Emile Hřjbjerg, Jordy Clasie, James Ward-Prowse and Dušan Tadić all started in a diamond formation in midfield.

Jay Rodriguez partnered Charlie Austin in attack, rekindling a strike partnership that was initially formed in the north-west of England, when the two played alongside each other for Premier League new boys Burnley.

Saints nearly made a nightmare start when Fredrik Jensen was played in on goal, but the forward could only fire wide when placed under pressure by the advancing Lewis.

The highly-rated Hakim Ziyech then fired wide of Lewis' goal before Saints made the breakthrough in the 17th minute.

A ball to the far post from Dušan Tadić picked out the unmarked Virgil van Dijk - sporting the captain's armband - who volleyed past Twente stopper Nick Marsman with confidence.

Oriol Romeu went close to adding a second goal just after the hour mark, but his fierce drive sailed wide of the target.

With just over 20 minutes remaining, Saints doubled their lead in strange circumstances.

A ball into the box was met by Gallagher, who collided with the Twente goalkeeper before watching the ball roll over the line as Marsman and a defender got in each other's way as they failed to clear the ball and prevent the goal.

With time running out, Pete Bijen scored as Saints conceded for the first time in preseason. A ball into the box found Bijen at the back-post, with the Twente man taking a touch before sending an expertly-placed effort into the top corner of Lewis' goal.

Saints held on for the win as they made it three wins on the bounce in preseason.

    SAINTS: Lewis; Martina (Valery - 62'), Yoshida (Stephens - 62'), Van Dijk (Jones - 62'), McQueen (Targett - 46'); Hřjbjerg (Hesketh - 62'); Clasie (Ward-Prowse - 46'), Reed (Romeu - 46'); Tadić (Gallagher - 62'); Austin (Redmond - 46'), Rodriguez (Isgrove - 62').

    Unused Subs: Gazzaniga, Turnbull, Olomola.

I always wondered why a man who made his name playing the long ball system was left in charge of a team that is supposed to play with passing football.

I see he has annoyed some short people.

I don’t normally find him amusing, only find myself funny if I’m honest.

I woke up this morning to news on the Beeb radio that Mark Field had physically accosted a protester and that the footage was “shocking”.
