  1. Says you. But I find gio1saints's view a refreshing alternative to the ultra-negative and, often, insulting opinions of RM. A run of fourteen games unbeaten is still not enough for some of the usual suspects on here--many of whom are barely able to manage any respect for what RM has achieved since taking over. Criticism is best from those who are even-handed and open-minded. And from supporters who want the manager to succeed, rather than yearn to see him fail.
  2. Leicester have lost their last two games; Ipswich have drawn two of their last three games.
  3. Interesting, and encouraging, to see Bree keep his place at LB. Manning had seemed to be a "pet" choice for RM in that position, but the manager does seem to respond to changes in form and fitness that he sees at the training ground and in league games. And gives opportunities to players who emerge and shine. Or perhaps he listens closely to what the other coaching staff have to say. Regardless, it's good for the squad, I reckon, that the manager is now combining two essential things: finding a settled team (especially in the defence), but also ready to make changes when required.
  4. The away game versus Wolves was March 12th. It was an eleven-game unbeaten streak that followed (six wins and five draws). Saints were runners up to Man City, and played them away for their last game of the season on Wednesday, May 18th. It was a 0-0 draw, which clinched promotion by one point. I was at boarding school at the time in Shropshire (near Market Drayton)--in Form II of grammar school. Before that final game, Saints were even on 53 points with Coventry City, and had a +9 GD over them. The morning after the evening game, I rushed up to one of my teachers and asked him for the result. Football was a big deal at the school and we had kids from all over the country--supporters of Liverpool, Everton, Newcastle, Man U, Man City, Chelsea, Spurs, Arsenal, etc. So the importance of this game was understood by most of the school's pupils and teachers, and I knew that the staff had a daily newspaper up in their common room. The teacher kept a straight face for a moment and told me that Saints had lost to Man City 0-10. My face fell for a moment, but the outlandishness of the score was hard to believe. "No!" I exclaimed in a combination of disappointment and disbelief, before my teacher admitted the real score a moment later; it was a 0-0 draw. Southampton were promoted to the First Division for the first time. Ecstasy!
  5. Ah, figured out the issue: the clocks went back an hour in UK last Sunday. Doesn't happen in Canada until tomorrow night! As you were! 😜
  6. Speaking as a supporter who now lives overseas (in Canada), being in the Premier League is important because it means I can watch Saints play every single game of the season on TV. Now that we have dropped to the Championship, TV coverage is sporadic. Much as I appreciate the audio commentary of Adam B and Joe T, and enjoy the debates on here, I do like to see the games, so that I can watch the players and form my own opinions. Perhaps we'll get TV coverage of all Championship games in the not-too-distant future. Here's hoping.
  7. Sorry, I missed discussion of Saints' formation. Can someone oblige, please!
  8. I can understand the concerns and frustration with our setup and tactics--I share them--but that is unacceptable and counter-productive.
  9. So sorry to read this, WG. We have you and your wife in our thoughts. Best wishes.
  10. I watched Lust For Life recently for the first time. It's the 1956 film (based on the Irving Stone biographical novel) about the life of Vincent Van Gogh, which stars Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn. For a Hollywood film made in the '50s, it is surprisingly good--especially the performance of Kirk Douglas as Van Gogh. There is also a lot of location shooting (France, Belgium and The Netherlands), which is also unusual for a Hollywood film of that period. If you have an interest in the subject matter, I would recommend this film. A good companion piece to Loving Vincent.
