  1. makes me sad for all those Arsenal fans who just last year suddenly became much less successful.
  2. To the extent I had any insightful thoughts about Rickie Lambert, I found that I had already posted them on my blog. http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/2014/10/great-moments-in-recent-southampton.html http://redsloscf.blogspot.com/2014/08/great-moments-in-recent-southampton-fc_20.html

    Don'[t forget Martina.
  4. Lets give it at least one more.
  5. I was also thinking this. In fact, I have often thought that we should convert him to an attacking players so we could sell him for 200 million pounds next summer.
  6. In an article linked in the original article linked by the original poster, Tadic shows up as the worst performer in the league in goals scored compared to expected goals. http://www.bbc.com/sport/football/40699431

I think that the spurs weight may actually be changing with their new stadium, the increased money from TV these days, back to back champions league appearances, a good manager (if he stays), Arsenal's ongoing problems (if they persist), the advantages of a London locations, and their increasing popularity world wide. You are funny too. Tottenham's limitations were, before FFP, self imposed in that their rich owner didn't want to spend lots of his own money. FFP actually helps Tottenham because their advantages should allow them to spend more and more as time goes by while still complying with the FFP rules. Leicester's situation was just a fluke. No one could have planned for that or be expected to recreate it. I agree what the club could have accomplished more, but I don't put it down to management not doing things right but close games where, with a little bit more luck, a few draws could have become wins. Or, last year, a few scoreless draws could have become wins. Still 4 top 8 finishes seems like a significant improvement on 4 top 12 finishes. As for Southampton having "much the same fans" now as when the club was last in the premier league, that is simply not true. This time the club has me. Quite right. I was so relieved when we lost the cup final last season.

After getting back from my vacation, I intended to catch up with all the posts and probably reply to a bunch of them. But instead I will watch this a few more times and relax. Catch you all later.
  9. Obviously, there is no real rule. It is just common sense. If a club wants to sell a player and get full value, they need at least two years left on the player's contract. If VVD hadn't signed a new contract, he would have had three years left this summer so he couldn't force a sale quite yet, but he could in 2019. In other words, if the club intended to sell him this summer, then they would not have offered him a new contract.
  10. Do you really not understand that the transfer prices in the media are not necessarily accurate and, even if they are, they do not mean that the club instantly receives and gets to keep the full amount? Do you not understand that the long term contracts we have signed players to involve significant increases in salary? There is no large reserve of unspent cash.
  11. I truly would like the answer to this question. A while back I looked at some of Alpine's old posts and he always seems so miserable. I don't understand why he puts himself through this.
  12. Or a preseason game and their place but we keep the gate receipts.
  13. I think he thought it worthwhile to point out the9's first mistake.

  15. I think you are basically wrong. Your first reason is only an issue if we sell in this window to Liverpool or for too little money. Otherwise, it is a reason not to sell and to view the club's actions as sensible. You second reason is theoretically plausible, but not really. Players will, instead, learn that we can be used as a platform for their advancement. If they do well here we will over them an improved long term contract. They will learn that they should not take that contract unless they intend to extend their stay here beyond the two or three years implicit in their first contract. We want players to learn that lesson--not the lesson that they can take the big pay boost and signing bonuses and leave after two years anyway. Your final reason presupposes an intent to sell this window. Otherwise it is nonsense. Unless the board caves and sells, they have handled this perfectly. Plus given what other clubs are doing, this summer is sending a message that players on long term contracts don't always get what they want which is a useful message to send out.
