  1. In his native Albania he is called Broy-ya. As he has lived in England since his birth, his name has been pronounced (or mis-pronounced) as Bro-ja and that has stuck. Hope that helps.
  2. You have a good memory. It was the 9th January 1960 and we were in the Third Division (South). Saints team was Charles, Davies, Traynor, Connor, Page, Huxford, Paine, O'brien, Reeves, Mulgrew and Sydenham. The Saints other goal was scored by George O'brien. The 20 year old Terry Paine made four of the goals and I presume he is your best ever player. Great days.
  3. The blog was a good read and expressed the frustrations that most of us feel. Well done.
  4. Having read the Kreuger interview, I begin to lose hope. Although I disagreed with some of the things that he said and did, it is at times like these that I long for the Cortese days. Someone who had a clear vision for the club, always put us first and never regarded us as a "small club" with limited ambitions.
  5. Done - good luck! Can't believe how long this has been going on.
  6. It was Saturday 13th May 1967 and Saints were playing Aston Villa in the last game of our first season in the top-flight. I stood in the Milton Road end and saw Ron score 4 goals in our 6-2 victory ( Martin Chivers scored the other 2). We stayed up and Villa were relegated. That night the club that I was playing for in the Southampton Senior league was holding its end-of-season awards' dinner and our guest of honour was Ron. Just 2 hours after the game at the Dell ended, Ron turned up bang on time, presented the awards and stayed chatting with us for the rest of the evening. He was one of the lads. I've still got the photographs with Ron from that evening, the cutting that appeared in the Echo and his prized signature. He scored 37 goals in 41 appearances that season, playing for a team that finished 4th from bottom. In fact, his goal total represented exactly 50% of the goals scored by Saints in the league that season so, without him, our stay in the top-flight would have been short-lived. His prowess in the air has been mentioned by others and they do not lie. He was, quite simply, the best header of a ball that I have ever seen. And that is how I want to remember him, in his heyday soaring at the far post in the red and white stripes. One of the true legends of Southampton Football Club and, if there is any justice, he must be added to the masthead of this site.
  7. 3 April 1963 - Saints v Nottingham Forest - FA Cup Quarter-Final replay. 3-0 down deep into the second half, with many of our fans leaving The Dell, when we staged the most remarkable recovery to claim a 3-3 draw and a 2nd replay at a neutral White Hart Lane the following monday. 8 April 1963 - Saints v Nottingham - FA Cup Quarter-Final 2nd replay. In front of 42,000 fans, with 30,000 from Southampton, we romped to a 5-0 victory under the floodlights at White Hart Lane. Saints team for both games - Reynolds, Williams, Traynor, Wimshurst, Knapp, Huxford, Paine, O'brien, Kirby, Burnside & Sydenham. Happy days!
  8. You can play whatever system you like, but if individual errors persist it won't make any difference - and 2 of your team were culpable tonight. We are all concerned and I know that you are desperately searching for an answer, but I honestly don't think it will achieved by this formation, which adds another non-Premier League standard centre back to the team.
  9. You have an apt adjective in your user name.
  10. They hack me off too. Surely they must realise by now what type of football NA wants us to play. But no, there are constant shouts imploring the players to get rid of it, hoof it upfield or give it some welly. Top of the league, 21 consecutive home wins and still they moan. And as for the booing at half time - unbelievable.
  11. You would have thought that the OS would have updated the league table by now, but at 5.35 thay still haven't.
  12. It may have escaped your notice but, yet again, he is injured!
  13. Agree with this. A lot of nonsense has been written on this forum in the last few days on this subject and it is a crying shame that MLT and other Saints greats have been subjected to so much needless criticism by the faction on here whose raison d'etre is "Cortese can do no wrong". The two events this weekend were joyous celebrations of our history - nothing more, nothing less. I saw Alan Shearer on TV say that he enjoyed every minute at the Mayflower and wouldn't have missed it for the world. What a shame that members of the current squad were not given the opportunity to share in what was a wonderful experience for all those that attended these events.
  14. I agree with you entirely. Previously Lloyd James took free kicks, etc. He doesn't play and the only player we can find is our best player in the box? The only set-piece he didn't take today and he scored. There have to be other players who can take free kicks and corners. Dan Harding proved today that he is one of them.
