I'm willing to participate nick.

I think I can give you a very good view on hooliganism in the lower leagues today compared to in the mid to late seventies.

Seriously, when the boot boys of the Milton terrace were hearing about The Millwall Brick I was seeing them used week in week out in div 3 and 4. Google 'Millwall Brick' nick. never directly involved obviously but as a bystander I think I offer a good viewpoint. Many will puff their chests out with tales of bravado and 'how we took The Shed with the Chelsea in it' but inside a crowd does not give thebest view IMO.

Also bear in mind that where and when I grew up peOe never had a home phone let omen smart phone to orchestrate a bundle. It was very much a case of knowing the back alleys to head off your prey in those days. Not forgetting the pitch invasions and non segregation of terracing, it could and would flare up at any moment, very volatile.

Pay your fiver you tight added college boy and PM me for a meet.....

IMO, football hooliganism today is all but dead. Most 'incidents' that occur inside grounds are no more than a few people getting aggro with each other. More often than not it is more likely to be your own fans that cause the problem. Hooliganism was a social thing, nowadays it's a gang thing. The stabbings we all read about today has replaced the running battles of the 70's and the hooliganism of the 80's and 90's. Kids have always wanted to be part of something bigger better harder stronger. bravado has always been around us, however, when it spills out onto the streets and innocents are injured or killed, there will always be a public backlash, be it against the mods and the rockers, punks and skinheads, millwall chelsea, west ham, England Italy, the black community rising against the police in Brixton, etc. If there is no cause, it is gang led, if there is footall involved, it is hooliganism, if there is ethnic minorities involved it is race riots. Football hoolignism is nothing more than an extension of gang warfare and social bravado, with beefed up ego's and testosterone. Boys will always be boys, give em (us) a cause and we will fight until we drop. Then we grow up and move one, well, 90% of us do, there is that small minority that think running with the kids is 'ard!

Yes, it is IMHO the epitome of homo eroticism. Why else would a man crawl over another man to grapple with another man?

Of course no real hooligan bloke will admit to this, more like to grapple with you. Very ironic.

Then I guess we should really say that about all football fans. Grown men getting all excited, jumping around singing, screaming - some even crying at times! - all for 11 fit young guys running around in shorts. Very homo erotic.

Respect to all the old gits in the Kingsland that just sit on their hands with mouths shut tight. (Tho' maybe the tartan blanket across their knees is really just to hide their erections?) Pwoper 'ard b*st*rds, no homo eroticism there.

If you had a PM I would PM you a link to help you out with background - its a site with all of the current "Firms" and some older ones. I'm not posting it on here tho.

Can you post it in the form of a cryptic crossword clue?

What is your actual dissertation title though? "Hooliganism in the UK" is a very broad brush, are you going to be more specific than that, i.e. "Football hooliganism and it's impact on the average football in the early 1970s vs 2010, on the South Coast"? You need to be specific.

You'll probably get all the information you need from:

http://www.casspennant.com/book-aggro.shtml

http://www.casspennant.com/book-icf.shtml

They are actually interesting books to read anyway, quite amusing - but they cover from the 60s to the 80s. Plagiarise away.

What are you studying?

Now I'm not saying Cass Pennant wasn't a nawty lump - he quite obviously was - but like most hoolie books he had a tendancy to dress it up a bit. He certainly used a bit of artistic licence when he told a 'story' of how the ICF took it to Saints at Orient in the FA Cup back in 1985 - well they did attack a near empty terrace not long after the gates opened while most of the 5k up there that day were still back in the pubs!

Funny that I was there and I'm sure Cass was stood virtually next to me - no bother. Also funny how he never mentions getting put straight on his arse just outside the Milton.

one question....i lived in Winchester for 16 years. When did it get a ****ing Uni?

According to it's website... 1840.

Though checking in more detail, in 1992 King Alfred's College started getting accreditation from the University of Southampton, in 2004 they got degree awarding powers of their own, and in 2005 changed to University of Winchester.

Not sure if it's the same organisation as the Winchester Art College that Southampton Uni used to run or not, but wouldn't be surprised. If I didn't know better and hadn't been paying attention, I might have missed the Chimpstitute's morphing into Southampton Solent Uni as well...

Once you've paid your Lady Goddiver, I'll be happy to answer a few questions on this.

This book will be good for research: Steaming In - Colin Ward. Easily the best book of it's time.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Steaming-Colin-Ward/dp/0743495500

Also, as you're probably a pup. Watch this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/I-D-DVD-Reece-Dinsdale/dp/B00004W4H5/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1302881265&sr=8-2

Whilst it won't help with your dissertation, it is a decent film on the subject.

In answer to that question; it occasionally makes me late getting home which is an inconvenience.

A couple of years ago I decided to change where I parked after getting 'caught up' in the middle of the Pompey fans being escorted to the station, which again was more of an inconvenience than anything else.

As a general rule I feel fairly safe at home games but if I'm gonna be wandering around at an away match I tend not to wear a saints shirt just in case. And I don't just mean in case of opposition trouble, it's also so there is no perceived association with some of the idiots who follow saints. If they want to fight then on their heads be it.

Am I a wuss?

Lot of truth in this. Do your thesis on the relation between (a) social depravation (b) academic/educational achievement © thicknesss (d) meainginlessness of life otherwise and (e) football "hooliganism" and you can tie all this together to get a good old thesis.
